Stephen Fry tells most of you to shut the F*ck up and to stop being depressing c*nts:

Very enjoyable and thought-provoking, however...

It's all well and good to post a video telling people to be fun and creative with their language, but it may just hold more weight if it wasn't quickly becoming apparent that your entire vocabulary consists of the words "depressing" and "c***".

Hahah you just did what the clip is talking about. It's a video, lighten up.

On the contrary, I was neither correcting any pedantic grammatical errors, nor complaining about any inventive use of language, in fact I think you'll find I was actually telling you to do more of one of the things the video was driving at, ie. being more creative with language instead of using only one adjective and one noun to describe everything. :P

I think you'll find the moral of the video is to enjoy language without getting hung up on rules.

I made my point, you can fill in words to make you feel special in the pants if you like.

clearly you have an obsession about depression, probably suffer from it yourself

every second post you make seems to have that word in it

Thanks for pointing out an issue with my repetitive sayings. Clearly you missed the point of the video. In any event - I come here to talk about forum topics, not about me - add me on facebook if you want and we can talk about me all day best buddy, paveway.

According to you the point of the video is to enjoy language, but using the same phrase over and over again to describe everything doesn't exactly sound like enjoying language to me, sounds more like monotonising it (see what I did there!? I verbised a word, just like in the video!)

God it's like trying to reason with a door... oh now I get it. ;D

I hate it. Especially on places like Facebook where there is ample space to use normal language, not mention the really terrible spelling that you see.

Perhaps it is my issue.. it's just that your posts are so... depressing.

Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry are indeed non-straight.

Yeah I like reading it and sometimes I try to write like that but I'm probably using it wrong.

I think we all suffer from not being corrected when wrong. People should always correct others, I wouldn't be offended if someone corrected my language/pronunciation/spelling.

But usually I prefer it my way.

Wow! You are complaining about people butchering the English language by writing like that ?

Your language is not really any more readible then the "omg how r u?" types.

Well in the context of understanding the intent of the sentence then yes, you're right Obes, but the shortening of such a question to that form irritates me when it could easily have been typed using normal English.

I said 'AFK' to my brother in G-Chat about 6 months ago and he had no-idea what I meant by that. He's just turned 30 and has been on a computer longer then me...

I always sucked at English in school. Hand-writing is appalling, spelling is poor and general coherency is s***.

However, people seem to be able to understand what I'm trying to comunicate and according to all the courses words are only like 20% of communication anyway.

As long as the other person can understand you, does it really matter what words you use?

to those who went to uni and are grammar & spelling fanatics it seems to be.

the only problem i have is if ppl leave out so many letters you are guessing what they are saying.

My friend showed me a msg from some chick the other day and it took us both maybe 10min to decipher what it meant. Worst spelling i have ever seen and the sentences made no sense at all.

If the other people are guessing what you're saying, they're not really understanding you. So it does become a problem.
But if that same chick, sent it to one of her other similar chick friends, they might instantly know exactally what she was trying to communicate.

(P.s. Those chicks you cut lose, before you give them your number)

Out of that entire sentence constructed in proper English you deemed one single word worthy of being abbreviated to SMS slang?

Zy, I am not the one raging about crappy grammar. So the irony is actually you pointing out that I am pointing someone who is really crap calling other people really crap.

In fact the only people I have ever corrected are ones who correct others or feel they can whinge about others grammar. I am a huge believer in the glass houses and that the whole point of communication is accurate conveyance of understanding and not archaic adherence to artefacts.

You definately need to get with the times because shortening words and abbreviations are the way of the future. add compaigns, signs, shirts, everything uses abbreviated words these days.

Using ppl instead of people is not even in the same ballpark as that s*** u wrote

I find it sad hwo some ppl care so much about how other people say things. If you can bring your point accccross better, then do it and use your superior language skills. Surely this would make you the winner. It also f*cks up otherwise normal conversations. People of all smartness and dumbness need to come together and play nice. You know what im sayin dawg?

Jesus so many of you people are so negative and angry and depressive. If you don't like their games, just f*** off from them, if you hate life so much that everything makes you angry, then there's really only one solution. - kos

Hah, awesome video, I love the idea of sound-sex. Totally get where hes coming from, sometimes theres words I find and I just think to myself damn thats an awesome word, it sounds awesome when I say it, and its fun to use. I also get where hes coming from with the bit about how sad it is that people get ridiculed or thought pretentious just for enjoying using some crazier or less common words, like I dropped the word 'loquacious' into a conversation the other day cos I'd just read the word and thought "What a sweet word, I want to use that", and all it did was confuse people and draw ridicule :( Sad state of affairs tbh.

As for pendantry with regards to correcting people's language, the people who are so pedantic to correct their instead of there, or you're instead of your, and try and hold themselves as beings of somehow superior intelligence because they know the right place to put an apostrophe really give me the s***s. Like the fryster was saying, its not like it hurts the clarity at all, you know exactly what the person is saying. Arguments aren't somehow magically nullified or disproven just because you found a grammatical error in them.

Whoosh! Way to completely miss the point. Find another post in the recent past where I've used that adjective. You can't, you know why? Because I don't use the word in every second post I write. There's nothing wrong with you using the word, but if you use it to describe everything and everyone all the time, it gets tedious and repetitive very quickly.

Also interesting to note, depressive and depressing are unique words in themselves, so I did in fact use a different word to you after all! ;P

Edit: Crak, I know that last line is in inverted commas but ... is it because it's a directly pasted quote, meaning the error is intentional, or did you make the mistake of writing "fly's" (fly is) as the plural of fly (flies)?
I meant you're a homosexual.

This thread reminds me of the time I left a note for my boss (a specialist doctor who is fairly down to earth) with the abbreviation "atm" at the end. Much lol ensued when I found out she asked one of the other younger girls at work what that meant (she thought I was talking about a bank atm). Needless to say, I no longer use any abbreviations like that at work - probably shouldn't have in the first place anyway but oh well.

Also... loving the thread. Most people are terrible with spelling and grammar - it's really quite embarrassing. Don't get me started on people who use capitals and small letters when writing; no idea what message someone is trying to send across but I perceive these people to be utterly retarded.
