Topic: Latest Steam Weekly Sales Rankings

Steam have published their latest weekly list of best sellers, offering an interesting insight into what is happening in the world of PC game sales. Here's the list:
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Mount & Blade: Warband
  • Just Cause 2
  • The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom
  • The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom - Gold Edition
  • Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Chaos Rising
  • Plain Sight
  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West
It's particularly noteworthy to see that Bad Company 2 is outselling Modern Warfare 2, though it would be fascinating to see by exactly how much and to what degree the issue of dedicated servers plays into that purchase decision.

Also of note is that despite the well-publicised issues of the DRM impacting the ability to play the game, the Steam version of Settlers 7 continues to sell well. Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is another game that reportedly has dedicated servers (though we haven't seen the software yet - in discussion with the publisher about it now), so one that might be worth keeping an eye on; our game page has info, screenshots and videos.

So I'm probably going to come off as a dick (but that's normal right?) but I don't really care. When posting a news article say the death of Polish president, it's good etiquette to post the source of the article. Similarly, you should be doing the same.

I think you should be doing this for every single news post you guys do. It adds credibility.

greazy: Its entirely possible that Ausgamers get this s*** from an email press release rather than from an interweb article.

Do you want "Source: My Inbox" ?

To be honest I never thought about that and if that were the case then it's all good but I've noticed a lot of the time a source is missing when it would be mighty helpful.

Valve doesn't release any figures for this type of s*** unfortunately.

This is the best you can get from http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Peak Today Game

113,163 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
87,519 Counter-Strike: Source
22,439 Team Fortress 2
75,123 Counter-Strike
16,876 Battlefield: Bad Company 2
14,192 Left 4 Dead 2

Which is a pointless comparison anyway because cod6 requires steam running whereas most people would be buying bc2 from other retailers.

Got to lol @ cs (Release date: June 12, 1999) and cs:s (Release date(s) October 7, 2004). Still going strong.

Not saying its the case here though ... and any press release should probably be accompanied by a web page as a reference anyway.

Rant maybe valid. Just playing devil's advocate for my man trog. Remember me for Blizzcon trog.

Ausgamers is the News site, for this type of news. So that would say;

I just can't believe Counter-Strike: Source, is still selling as well as it is.

its funny you say that, I was going to post the source like we do in basically every single news post that we do, ever, but I figured, no, I'm sure people will figure out that it comes from the Steam best sellers list

Surely by now you realise we're not in the habit of just making s*** up or publishing rumours as facts, unlike every other jerk blog out there for whom that is bread and butter stuff

no! I meant to mention that but it was already getting a bit long. Just amazing to see the staying power of this game

Remeber those stats for todays online players includes "113,163 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer" which is the demo MP.

2,361 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Thats what the paid version gets

About a quarter of what BC2 is getting.

Not that the COD people realy care how much people keep playing the game after they buy it, as long as they can build enough hype to sell the next version in the same or higher numbers they did with the latest version.

I'm not saying you guys make s*** up or even are lax on which sources you use (quite the opposite actually) but a lot of the times I want to checkout the source for more detail.

It's a habit that's been instilled in me because of my profession.

Then click the "View Steam players per game" link down the bottom, expands the page, theres no direct link to it.

no thats incorrect. 2361 are playing co-op type stuff

the 113163 is not the demo - thats people playing the multiplayer game.

But that number still includes people playing on the free weekend.

Yeah cod6 has been consistently performing, just before the free weekend I noticed it dipped below CS:S for the first time (just) since release but now it is way above again.

I could be wrong, why would it show up twice on the list then? the demo is specically called "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer" unless you get 2 version of MW2 showoing up in your games list when you have the full version once being single player and the other Multiplayer, not sure I havent bought it.

Either way its still on a free weekend.

Posting to say how awesomely fun Lead & Gold is when you manage to get a game.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many ppl playing it ><
Also I think it got the AvP treatment and wasn't released with the dedicated servers.

I find it very hard to believe that CS is still selling like that.

I've just fired the devs another email.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that if you bought this game and want dedicated servers you hit up their official forums and/or support channel and ask for them mentioning that you are in Australia and good servers are hard to find or whatever!

There are so many server side mods for CS:S it is unbelievable. I played this crazy weird mod called Prison Break where 1 or 2 people act as a Guard and the rest are prisoners and the Guards instruct prisoners tasks over the mic. It was f***en weird some of the s*** these guys were asking. Was typing exit pretty fast on that one.

Then you've got the many people who cheat and have probably gone through 10+ cs accounts after getting banned repeatedly.

So many hackers have to buy new copies when VAC kills them.

edit: CTD beat me to saying it

Also I play gun game occasionally. Its good fun when the weapons are random and there is the deathmatch style of respawn when the person who killed you is killed, fast paced and instant gratification. About as far away as you can get from a MMO.

Trog, steam forums seem to indicate dedi servers being released in approx. two weeks, but as far as I can tell there's no official word from the dev's yet.

oh and they'll only be for Windows
Not sure if that's a big deal for server hosting type ppl but yeah :p
that's all I can find, official forum doesn't have much on it either.

I can't believe people are still playing it. I like to hang on to the past and play some old commodore games & dos games at times but damn, even I don't touch CS anymore.

If you own cs:s, fire it up and join a Gun Game server (GA and node both have a few) for some good fun.

A warning though, prepare to rage with the crappy hit boxes.

Thread title is misleading, i saw "sales stats" and thought it was odd as i recalled that steam didn't release sales figures, but i clicked and it was just the steam top 10.

Also of note is that despite the well-publicised issues of the DRM impacting the ability to play the game, the Steam version of Settlers 7 continues to sell well.
How do you know, its behind mount and blade warband, i've heard of it but who cares about that, settlers 7 would surely be a bigger name than it, the numbers could be bfbc and cod selling 10000, mount and blade selling 100, and settlers 7 selling 50 copies.

Yeh but Steam is a pretty big sales vehicle. Being on its top 10 is pretty significant.
