Considering everyone is using Long Life fluro bulbs now that work best being left on isnt it going to use more electricity to turn it back on then it consumes staying on ?

I am seriously considering getting some form of Carbon Offset (http://www.carbonneutral.com.au/). Anyone know much about it? and if it actually works (ie it's not a scam?). It's about $400 bucks for 3 people, with 2 cars (rarely used), public transport and a return flight within Australia once a year. So it's actually not too bad.

I am going to do one better. When I go to sleep, I will turn off all my lights for 8+ hours.

Your $400 would be better spent when donated to some worthy charity. Think of it as a moral offset rather than a carbon one.

According to that url you posted, 30% goes to their operation costs. That's $120 you'd be paying some random company to clear land so they can plant new trees (where existing ones had likely been growing).

It's a scam.

I don't mind about that so much, it's the fact that it cuts into the first ten minutes of Rockwiz that annoys me. Oh well, not to matter.

Time has past for symbolic jestures, we get the point we are f***ing the earth, pointless things like this are stupid, money rules all.

Like how shell has cut all its worldwide funding for wind and solar power, and puting it into that thing were they put the carbon undergound, cause they reckoin thats where the money is.

They dont even have to plant new trees, they just say they wont cut down the existing ones.

Fireblood it's a scam, they've had the idea to sell you nothing. Everything their business is based on is assumptions and guilt.

my 50" plasma works in the dark so i'll happily turn the lights off while i play Condemned in the dark with headphones (i'm shaking in anticipation) and the missus watches a movie on the 42" in the spare room.

it is for the environment after all!!

From last Friday's Best of the Web
A Web site called EarthHour.org, apparently unconcerned about the carbon footprint of majuscules, urges global warmists to "VOTE EARTH BY SWITCHING OFF YOUR LIGHTS FOR ONE HOUR" starting at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow. We were tempted to make fun of this, as many people in the site's comment section have done, but then we remembered what President Obama said about cynics who fail to understand that the ground has shifted beneath them. So instead of being consumed by the stale political argument that this protest is silly, we're going to do something positive: organize a counterprotest.

Reader, if you are against global-warming hysteria, high taxes, socialized medicine and a weak foreign policy, Sunday is your day. Show how you feel about the issues by turning on your lights in the evening and leaving them on until you go to bed. If you go out for a drive after dark, make sure you turn your headlights on too.

Granted, the EarthHour people have a head start on us. They started planning this months ago, whereas we're giving you all of 48 hours notice. Yet we think the outlook is bright for this effort. Tell your friends, tell them to tell their friends, and so on, and we'll bet millions of people across the country will turn their lights on Sunday night.

If no one will listen to the silent majority, let's at least make sure they see us.
I notice from the quick check of my neighbors that this last ditch effort at a counter protest had almost overwhelming support on Sunday night. I didn't see a single car out sunday night without headlights on! Hope you guys joined in too.

This anti-environmentalist movement is pretty retarded to be honest. I'm not a fan of EarthHour, in fact I think it's a big wank-fest, but that doesn't mean we should go around encouraging wasteful living as some sort of misguided counter-protest.

Whether carbon dioxide is causing global warming or not, whether global warming as a result of industrialisation even exists or not, it doesn't change the fact that the way we live at the moment is extremely wasteful. Even if global warming doesn't exist, using energy still uses up resources that we could be using more frugally and causes a lot of unhealthy emissions/waste. It seems that global warming needs to be better proven or disproven, but really we just need to look past it.

Also I don't understand how making a point of unnecessarily turning all your lights on during EarthHour as a counter-protest could ever be in support of development in the third world. I mean we already take so much and give nothing to them, how could taking even more and making a point of it ever help?
