Topic: Offsetting Greenhouse Gas Emissions

This website ( www.greenfleet.com.au ) will offset your emissions for just your car, or for your car, house, and flight for a fee (totally tax deductible).

Based on our usage for car and house (we don't fly) it would cost $2282 or 970 trees to offset our emission for one year.
Considering paying this, as while it is a lot it is as cheap as chips to know it will better my children's future.

That much money would buy you a decent-sized solar panel (after rebates) which would probably offset a lot more carbon emissions in its lifetime than one year of that other stuff, surely!

The Troggles speaks sense.
Take action yourself to fix up our s***ty planet if your guilt is that terrible, don't send off money to some random people who may or may not do anything at all.

I guess it is directed at those who work, don't have much time, but have extra money (or like tax deductions). Those who are too busy/lazy to do it all themselves and those who can use it as a tax deduction.

While I am sure you could manage to do it all yourself (for maybe less, maybe not). The fact it is as easy as paying someone else and getting a refund come tax time makes it so much more appealing.

So what you're saying is it is targeted at the arseholes who are f***ing up the environment for future generations in the first place...

How do you come to that conclusion? In a way we are ALL f***ing up the environment, regardless of if we work or not.

if you want to better your childrens future, spend the money on their education. (or even better, put them up for adoption)

Didn't help you.........then again you were adopted by a down syndrome couple.

That makes no sense. If his parents were downies then it would be an insult to him because it would presumably mean he was a downie. But if he was adopted by downies then it just means his biological parents were unable to care for him.

And adoption is tough, I don't think they'd allow downies on the books.

this is all assuming that "global warming" is really a problem and not some hype created by "interested parties" to ensure their ongoing funding in an ever decreasing pool of $$$$??
note i say "really a problem", i'm not disputing that the world may be getting warmer...but is it a "problem" as such?
didn't we have an ice age...and wasn't that fixed by the temps getting warmer?
don't more crops grow in warmer climates??
anyone read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton?? interesting read....

as a result of global warming? or just general bad practices and industrialisation?

I can offset your emissions for significantly less than that, and it'll really benefit the environment, not have you buying some carbon sink. I'll ride my bike to work one day a week instead of driving my V8 ute for just $1550 per year. Let me know if you want to take me up on that offer....

Interesting article here on the fraud that is carbon offsetting. I'm not suggesting i'm a fraud, i really would not drive my ute 1 day a week for $1550.. promise.. except when its rainy in winter, though that's not very often down here or if i'm hung over on the designated day.

Just $1550. You not only save our earth for your children but I save you over $700 that you could put in an ethical investment fund for them.

Once they wise up and set the price of carbon to the recorded avg rise in temperature over the previous 12 months, then we'll be getting somewhere. Here's an excellent article on it, Why not tie carbon taxes to actual levels of warming?

isn't that purely because of the use of biofuels (as in ethanol)

or this

or any number of pros and cons sites for GW....
i'm not disputing that global warming is a factor but i'm questioning it's actual impacts on us all.
are they negative, positive, or neutral?

KAT,

While I am sure you could manage to do it all yourself (for maybe less, maybe not). The fact it is as easy as paying someone else and getting a refund come tax time makes it so much more appealing.

Why would you pay 100% of your money to get 30% back?

If you give me AUD50,000, in a year's time (or 6months now) I will give you AUD15,000 back! Best investment you'll ever make!

I think I will setup a Coy to plant trees. People "buy" the carbon offset, I buy land and plant trees, make mo money! People find out that Carbon Trading is actually stupid and stop buying, I sell the land with trees, so someone can chop them down for fire wood and make more money!! :)
*me rolls around in piles of money!*

I was watching a show on BBC about carbon offsets. They were interviewing the lady that runs greenfleet.

The interviewer asks "what happens if your trees burn down?" and she just said "oh, we replant them".

How is just replanting what burnt down going to make up for the carbon dioxide that has just been released in addition to the carbon dioxide that they were suppose to be originally absorbing 24/7 ?

Furthermore, what happens when the tree dies and the carbon that it has soaked up for is released again?

If you feel you need to carbon offset, look at the other forms such as renewable energy offsets or purchase 100% renewable power to start with.

people love to say how they are concerned about the environment until they learn how much worse their lives would be if they didn't have creature comforts.

if western governments continue with their wanky carbon offsets etc without the developing nations involved we will simply be replaced by the developing nations, as major polluters while laying in economic ruin.

i suppose it will make us feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside though.

will our meagre population of 20 million make one of iota of difference when 2 billion people in china and india are polluting to their hearts content?
