Residing currently in Acacia Ridge, which is unfortunately 4.5km+ from the Salisbury Telephone exchange, and 'outside' of the supposed "acacia ridge" exchange - which actually resides in Sunnybank Hills [Despite it being physically closer as the crow flies].This is according to TPG

The proposed rate on TPG for that kind of distance is 4088kbps which seems quite woeful.

I'm assuming this means all ADSL2+ options are out the window? [Anyone with experience with ADSL2+ in this area that can give an idea?]

Are there any decent broadband companies to go with? [That people recommend for download usage vs. price]

I'd rather resort to wire strung between two tin cans for communication before using Telstra Bigpond, so they're not even an option.

I'm with TPG and as said in This Thread i'm about 6.5km from my nearest exchange.

For any Linux ISO I can pull a steady ~150KB/s while doing other stuff.
I dont really think 4088kbps (3 times the speed I get) is what I would call woeful...

Whirlpool is usually your best bet for internet provider questions though, many a frothing Internet Warrior willing to fight for/defend certin companies in certin areas.
If I wasn't with TPG I would go with iiNet, check them out and see what speeds they can give you?

i would recommend Internode Extreme as you can get it on the Acacia Ridge exchange. If you wanted to go with Naked Extreme with Internode, they support Annex L which means you can get better sync if you living far away as shown..

I'm with node on a regular extreme plan. I live 4.5KM from the exchange (MGAT - Mount Gravatt) as well, and sync between 4 and 4.5Mbit most of the time.

I get attenuation of ~ 46-49dB and SNR of around 6-7dB when on the high speed profile.

Its not too bad, I'd love it to be faster, but nothing I can do about it.

Note: Extreme (normal) does not support AnnexeL.
Note2: I installed a Central Splitter, which improved my sync speed and stability dramatically.

What does that mean exactly?
And how does this differ from TPG's ADSL2+?

Is it really a vast difference at ~4 - 4.5km's (by copper wire) from an exchange?

Node seems to be per Mb; double the cost of TPG .
Where TPG offers 50gb for $59.95; Node offers 25gb for $59.95
(Although node on the naked plan does provide VOIP service with $10/month calls free)

If the speed difference is quite dramatic and/or more stable I'd take a bit of speed +stability over the extra download limit.

That being said, TPG site estimates 4088kbps which is equal to 511KB/s by my calculations ? - I'd be happy enough with this as both local/international, but being such a low projection I'd worry about the figure in reality being much lower.

I've never been on TPG personally, but I understand that there are a few differences between them and node.

a) Support: Node support is based in Adelaide. TPG support is based in Manila.
b) Value Added Services: Usenet Access is free on Internode (although it contributes to your cap) plus they run gaming servers and host a large file mirror.

I'd guess the main difference would be network quality and contention ratio. I never have an issue hitting my max speed...

Is a central splitter only necessary if you're running a landline on the same copper wire?
In other words, is the central splitter beneficial with VOIP as your -only- landline telephone access?
What if you do not have a landline connected at all?

From my understanding of what it does, if you didn't have a phoneline connected alongside it, it wouldn't make a difference?

central splitter is necessary if you have dial tone running a landline on the same copper wire... however if you go with Naked DSL then you dont have dialtone nor have to pay rental on it therefore no need for a filter

i max my connection everything i download in Australia and when i use Usenet. Download 1080 HD movie that is 7gb in 2hours or so :) but i only have sync of 7000kbps which around 700k/s

Signed up Node, though decided I'll pay the upfront installation fee since its bugger all, just incase ADSL2 at the ~4.5km range isn't quite so good, don't want to be locked on a 24month contract!

I am about 200m from the Sunnybank exchange, I almost have to transform down the signal strength I get out of it, as it still resembles a radiating white glowy orb at that distance without any decay.

I'd seriously suggest a central splitter - although these need to be professionally installed. Node also recommend them as a speed booster.

Not sure what they do with no dialtone, but if you're ULL (not naked), you will definately get a boost out of this, even if you don't use the phone.

I went with NakedADSL2 Extreme 25gb plan -

$69.95/month
VOIP - (No line rental) - $10/month free calls.

I figure the $10/month calls makes up for the extra $10 per month charge, plus no line rental makes it somewhat the same as say TPG (although they do offer greater D/L limit).

The other pro: for Node was that you guys suggested they are better over a greater distance from the exchange than other ISP's, but also the fact that node has gaming infrastructure with servers/file hosting etc. Which was more enticing also.

When I enquired about central splitter on the phone they said it wasn't necessary when using VOIP/Naked.

If I know how to post sync speeds when it's up and running I can do that. (moreover - find out what the sync speed and noise db is).

[edit] Earliest date for connection won't be till 08/05 though.

me and my inline filter sync around 13000/1000 (give or take) and im about 2.5k from my exchange

that seems to correspond exactly with the graph

most of my other online buddies seem to sync up pretty good with their distances from exchange and speeds, none of them have central splitters:

i know guys that sync at 24000/1000, they dont use central splitters

in fact i dont know anyone who uses a central splitter

so, explain to me why i need one?

But when you're 4.5KM from the exchange, and you're trying to get a fast, stable connection - like the thread starter - you do need one.

It is the best way to get the fastest possible connection.

I've been told I'm too far from the exchange to get any kind of DSL, telstra are raising their prices (surprise surprise) would it be worth having another go at getting DSL? Has the tech changed much in a year or two? Two different ISP's have told me no can do when I've given them a ring but is there a way they can actually test it or should I just chance it on one of the ISP's that don't have contracts & hope I can get a decent connection and if I can't just cancel the plan?

I mostly play games so blazingly fast downloads aren't TOO important but still I don't want to be thrown back to the stoneage & have dialup speed downloads.

central splitters are usually a waste money unless you're already having problems. id probably see how you go without it first.. oh yeh and with a central splitter you kinda limit where you can plug your modem in (not a problem for most ppl).

but he doesnt need one as he getting NAKED!!!!!!

All central filter does is filters all the lines except the one that has internet connection if he has naked then none of the other lines are being used therefore does not need filter.... lol

The place is full from top to bottom with human trash and f*** loads of thieving little f***s. Just a quick tip if you have a car park it on the street under a street light as believe it or not it's less likely to be broken into in that area. Only a few weeks back every car in my end of the street that was parked in a shed or driveway was broken into. Oddly enough the police were the ones that said none of the cars in prior incidents that were parked on the street had been touched.

If you were living up the industrial end closer to mortimer road and up that half.... then yeah, totally understandable and not obvious to see why.

Either which way, more and more of the dregs of society will be losing jobs and/or incapable of affording into areas closer to the city as more 'socially accepted' people with higher paying jobs pay more for being closer to the city. etc.

It's pretty much something you get in every area... Start looking for dirt, and you'll start noticing dirt.

Lol you don't have to look for dirt around Acacia Ridge is just shows up on your door step. You know Amherst st and Elizabeth st well there is a stack of scum in that area and it's pretty easy to call them scum when you actually have had some of them come up to your bed room window and ask if you have any drugs they can score.

On top of that the constant droves of f***wit kids traipsing up and down the streets pissed out of their heads at all hours of the night on weekends. Nah you don't have to look the trash grows on trees in that area.

You get that in pretty much every area except maybe gated communities if you're lucky. Even in the rich million dollar estates, I remember back in my "youth" driving around them in our rice mobiles with loud exhausts being dick heads because a few of our mates lived in there. You can't escape wankers no matter where you live. Just buy a shotgun and harden the f*** up.

Btw, you don't need a central splitter if you're getting naked adsl.

whoop I have lived in Strathpine, Bray Park, Deception Bay, Wynnum West, Manly West, Manly, Browns Plains, Caboolture, Acacia Ridge and now Holland Park. Acacia Ridge is by far the worst of the lot of them and by no small amount and the only one that even came close was D-Bay and it was still nowhere near as bad.

You know I never had anyone come knocking on my bedroom window for drugs in Strathpine nor did I have peope tossing bottles up and down the street in Wynnum even though has it's moments.

Sorry dude for jacking your thread. Just a quick thing about Acacia ridge and the net. I know a heap of people in that area that have s*** loads of hassles with big pond. Some of them used to lose their net for days at a time even though I gather you aren't even considering them I just thought I'd mention it.

What street did you used to live on Taipan?
