Well it all started about 20mins ago....
I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone and was sitting down in the back yard. Stairing at the stars I notice, a very small dull star going across the sky. It was very small as if it was very high up in the sky. I ran upstairs to get my father to have a look and when i got back down it was gone.
I know nothing about the atmosphere, so this is why I am here asking you.
What makes me think it was something weird and not like a shooting star or something is...
1. Don't shooting stars only illuminate when they hit the earths atmosphere?

2.And when they do, they only burn for a few seconds and then go out? (This was going for aleast 10sec before i ran upstairs)

3. This thing looked like it was extremly high up in the sky. So high it was moving very slowly, but if you were up there, as if it was going 2000k a and hour.

4. Can planes fly this high and fast? Wouldn't they have had flashing lights ect?

(I don't even know if these facts are real.)

But what was it...
After seeing this I pulled a few coushins from seats and put them in the backyard and waited for it to come back.
It didn't...

What are everyones thoughts on the universe?
Stars are suns right... That is all we can see... just suns.
So are these suns giving warmth to other planets like ours? With creatures like us on it?
It makes me think.

You told me and you didn't post anything, so I wanted to see what people thought... And what ever you are winging about I don't know, cause you posted before me anyway?

Everyone I think that Splat would like you all to know that he came up with the idea that it was a satellite.

You will probably find it was a satellite, being in a very high orbit it was still being illuminated by the sun far out of our curvature of the earth and thus looked like a light. Also it not being there when you looked a short time later was probably a mixture of moving in its orbit into 'night' and the rotation of the earth accellerating it past the line of sight of the illuminating rays of the sun. Remember, the only reason we can see the moon so brightly is becasue its bathed in sunlight.

The space shuttle has 'night' something like every 19 inutes because its generally going opposite to the earths rotation at 25,ooo kph.

I was listening to Carl Krushenevzsi ( soemthing liek that) , hes a science guru, and it surprised me to hear from him that if you sit outside mosta any night you will see several satellites...there are that many up there.

its a satellite, theres 1000s of them up there.

btw UFOs cannot be physical for several reasons:

1. people observe them making right angled turns at high speed (anything inside would be squished)
2. some people say they change shape and size...not physically possible unless they're expanding or something....
3. the impossibilities of travelling so far through space to reach us.
4. no picture of a UFO is clear...they're all blurry...i wonder why? pictures of space rockets taking off are perfectly clear and they are accelerating really fast

and other reasons...yet people still believe in UFOs travelling across the sky (as in this thread....you said you waited for it to come back... :O

anyway enuf babbling from me

If you stare at an object with no point of reference in view your eyes will start to play tricks on you and make you think a light is moving around, it makes lights appear to do fast, rapidly changing movement as your eyes dart back and forth in tiny amounts.

Say if you were in a heavily lit area then you turn out the light and stare at a distant lit object (like a house window) and everything else in view is black then you will have no point of reference and the light will appear to move around. Soon your eyes will get adjusted to the darkness and you'll see outlines of trees and whatnot and they act as points of reference and it will appear to stop moving. (Try it next time you have a blackout)

Maybe something along those lines happend to you :D

XandraX,
Thank you for your regressive views.
Please move on...

Every day, the "laws of science" are challenged, revisted, ammended and adapted as new technology becomes available.

What (for some of us anyway) our parents considered science fiction, has now been validated.

I'm sorry, your statements are based on principles that we are only starting to understand.

Follow me here for a bit,

Think about the technology readily available to the modern world today.

Technologically, the advances we have made in the last century are staggering, for both good and bad...

Example:
Look at the tech that has been developed, (for better or for worse) look at the level of tech experienced by the modern world to that of an impoverished 3rd world country.

Look at the distance between the technology they experience, and that which we, in the western world do.

Once you've considered that, think on this...

What makes you think that the tech available to our collective governments isn't as far as advanced from what we have available to us in our every day lives, as to that which is experienced by people who are only able to enjoy as a priveledge, that which we take for granted (running water and indoor plumbing)

Whoever you are, your a fool to believe that if it isn't already documented somewhere, then it can't exist.

If you truly believe that is the case, then can I offer you several AOL discs that always appear out of no-where that float around to assist people like you to "use the net" for free

Sheesh.....

Why UFO's aren't real, real physics.

1. It is impossible for solid matter as we know it to travel faster than the speed of light. yes it is theoretically possible in maths for this to happen, but the power required to do so is impossible to create.

2. Therefore it would take years to travel even from the nearest stars, therefore if carbon based intelligent life forms existed we would most likely communicate via radio waves or xrays etc etc.

3. Wormholes, yet to be proven to exist as the theory suggest they only exist for milliseconds, besides solid matter would be destroyed apon entry just like a black hole,

4. Life on other planets, the existence of life in the universe seems to less abundant than first thought, with the new crop of explorational satellites in the next few years will porve either way, but the money is on very simple life.

Instead of trying to move at spastic speeds using spastic amounts of power, there is always the folding of space and moving that way. Then when you have traveled your very large distance you can change engines and use a differnt more appropriate propultion system.

If you have the abiltiy to travel extream distances then you could most likly probe from extreame distances too. So with our puny little scanners we can only pick up the first few mounds of dirt in our backyard, we are most likly only going to find a few really simple bits of life (maybe even long lost ancesters that arrived via meteoroite).

I have no doubt that other advanced life is around in this universe, most likly nothing that we can understand yet, sure we might be able to find advanced life on a planet much like ours and find carbon based creatures, and would probably quickly find a way to communicate. But imagine finding what seems to be life on a totally differnt planet, they would be so differnt to us that we would most likly pass the planet as a 'dead' planet with no life, we may have done so many times.

Humans have so little understanding of the universe (we've only just begun to poke around in it, look at what the Quantum world has done in its short few years) that we cant even begin to say UFO's cannot exist, we can say they cant exist by definition of our rules, but that dosnt mean they cant exist.

I wonder if Maths will be used as the first method of trying to communicate with an alien species, as they say Maths is a Universal Language.

Folding - as with all these theoretical ideas, the energy required to move even one atom makes it a one way trip as the amount of energy required to move atom far exceeds that of the energy max an atom could produce.

As with previous post another limiting factor to space travel is radiation, prolonged exposure to radiations that are blocked by our atmosphere are of mjor concern to space travel, if the human race is to explore past our closest neighbour the moon, we will require adequate sheilding from the extreme radiations that are present in space.

Our undestanding of the universe is definately not complete, but it is far from minimal. And at present this understanding points towards travelling the vast expanses at around .8 of a light year. However this is also fraught with danger, as an accident with even the smallest of bodies at those speeds would be fatal. The truth of the situation is simple, there is no proof of extraterestrial visitation, most have been explained scientifically as weather or cranks, as our understanding of our own naturally occuring weather has proven, ball lightning being a classic.

1. people observe them making right angled turns at high speed (anything inside would be squished)

that is asuming they are a humanoid what if they where a blob of... stuff... what if they where unlike anything we had ever seen before... what if they where aliens

i know this contradicts alot of reports of what a alien looks like the old school you know tall long neck tall head big eyed thing but come on... there aliens

I was just reding through the thred and realised that the poeple that belive that there is other life form all seem to think that they are a superior race or atleast more advanced then us. There could be other life form out there but they might be as dumb as someone who buys hardware from harvey norman....

Seems the topic was of little green men and ufo's there was no discussion on basic life forms existing. However the mars rover was very disapointing in not finding microscopic life in the soil of mars, when you consider that here on earth a sample from just about anywhere will reveal life teaming in nearly every square inch of soil. New findings in extreme (gotta love the use of that word) lifeforms has found microbes in molten lava, and in the depths of the ocean, giving rise to the new theories that light is not required as a fundamental for life.

good point gumby, although they are good points. you beleive there is no other life out there? i find it hard to beleive there is nothing.... i find it hard to beleive we are the only stupid beings ever. (im talking superior life forms - as apposed to dogs etc) what i mean is the beings who create the world as it is... anyway. thats gone off my topic. the point is i find it hard to beleive there isnt another race of inteligent life form out there.... who agrees?
