I have a fair few ocd habits, totals in excel MUST have double lines, capital letters starting sentences, lines in pavement, volume at 5 increments, dishwasher packed a certain way etc

what the hell is this volume level thing? my mate said his sister is like that too. Is this the most common form of OCD behaviour? Personally I put the volume at whatever the hell feels comfortable to listen to.

I like everything to be symmetrical, monitor in the middle of the desk and speakers perfectly evenly either side.

Also when the DVD's aren't lined up perfectly and I notice I sometimes line them all up but not always and mostly only when I'm putting one back.

Don't really put any of that down to OCD though, speakers should be evenly placed from your head for awesomesounds(tm).

Although once my mate had an air freshener thing in his car and it was stuck to the vent upside down, it drove me nuts and I couldn't stop looking at it so when he wasn't looking I flipped it the right way up.

I work for a company who still hasn't quite picked up on the fact that we are not still in 1990, let alone 2010, and has an obsession with paperwork. We get a job come through, and about 100 pages are printed for each one, each time something changes a new piece of paper is added, adding a new staple to every. f***ing. page... Some cases in different corners and attaching to fewer pieces, so you can end up with a chain.

My OCD is: I can't handle staples. 1 Staple per file is my rule. If I come across a file with 2, they will both be taken out and 1 fresh new one returned in their place. The worst file I ever came across was actually one of my bosses, had 38 staples in a file of about 50 pages. I knew it was 38 because I counted every single one of them as I pulled them out.

That's nothing compared to my squeeze who is a perfectionist. My favourite one of hers is every piece of clothing on the clothes line must have the same colour pegs on it. Then, that entire row of clothes must also have the same colour, shes bats*** insane.

best before dates, or food expiry in general

ah yes forgot this one. I'm really bad with cold meats (ham, turkey, chicken) and breads.
my wife will declare the meat is fine but if it's over a few days I always give it the sniff test. sometimes my nose tells me no but my wife tells me it's ok.
I love fresh bread and hate frozen bread for toasting (apart from fruit loaf which is ok frozen) I would rather toast some bread that's been on the bench for a few days than have it frozen. then when it gets to long in the tooth, bits of mould etc, it's binned. my wife would rather freeze it after day 3-4 and use it for toast.
Beer - my wife likes to put the 6 packs in the fridge in their cardboard, I take them out! She claims this is untidy. Maybe she's OCD on this one!

Icons. **sn*****s**

Yeah I'm a symmetrical or "aligned" OCD too. It's probably why I'm into design etc. When it comes to programs and whatnot, I hate having the little (1) unread emails or (23) updates on icons or iPhone apps. I have to get to read them so it goes away.

I get OCD about XP users who don't have ClearType enabled.

I'm OCD about organising files into proper folders with capitalised names and none of this bulls*** of '00' or '__' to make folders appear at the top of the list or 'zzz' to make them appear at the bottom, can't stand it.

Speaking of icons, minimalist desktop all the way and they must be aligned. No files or folders on the desktop, only shortcuts. I cringe at co-workers that have s*** everywhere on the desktop cos it breaks my brain.

I'm sure it's the Myer's Briggs INTJ combined with inner control freak.

I used to have the volume thing - cept at increments of 2.

haha my mrs does this with the aircon temp and volume levels

I can't stand people who chew with their mouth open, to the point where I have to say something (is this ocd or just manners?)

alarm 1 definitely, i was late a couple times when i used to work at the fruit shop because i thought i turned my alarm on but i didn't. Now i put it on and check 2-3 times that i put it on and also think to myself "gotta be up by X" in the morning and somehow i wake up just before my alarm, even when it isn't a regular thing.

Keys thing bigtime. Check 3 or so times...

On a slight side note, sometimes I'll go to open something like a locker or a door (needing a key) and I'll pull out my car keys and hit the 'unlock' button on the remote. I quickly look around to see who I've made a fool of myself in front of haha

Haha i do this too i dont care how pointless the email is it MUST be marked as read.

Also im bad for triple checking gas, electrical applicances, door locks before i go to bed or leave the house... its not necessarily a bad thing might make me late a bit for work/bed but its saved my house getting robbed and burning down at least once or twice.

nothing major apart from being an achievement whore, though I did notice this...

I often melt chocolate and eat it with a spoon, but for some reason when breaking off rows of chocolate to melt I break off each individual piece, then rotate the whole row 180 before breaking off the next, it's not something I HAVE to do but if I'm not paying attention I just do it automatically.

Dude, my ex used to do the exact same thing. She had way more OCD qualities though. She used to have 2 sets of cuttlery, one set of orange borders and another set with green borders. She had to stack them by their colour, even in the sink if I put a dirty green plate on orange I'd have hell to pay.

She also has to iron her pillow cases before she sleeps on them. She also has to stack the mugs in the cupboard in the same order, small cups to big. Her wine cart is also stacked in alphabetical order. She has a huge thing against wall powerpoints. If nothing is plugged in they MUST be turned off. I used to go around her house switching them on in places and letting her know, then she'd have to sweep the whole house and would crack the s***s..... haha she's nuts!

I know a guy with serious ocd, and he has spent the last ~6 weeks installing operating systems on his new laptop. Everyday it's like 2 or 3 operating systems. He's done most of them a few times each. And he doesn't just install them, he gets like the latest source code and compiles it and builds his own drivers and goes to all this trouble and then bam... wipes his computer and does a different one.
It might be fun for him, but he then tells a lot of installation stories, which are massively boring, and I think he expects me to be enthusiastic about it or something, I don't even understand the stories because I haven't used 50 different operating systems before.

I am a little OCD about clean hands, but only under certain circumstances. eg, I know in my brain that my keyboard is probably filthy, but I don't need to wash my hands after using it. If I use someone else's keyboard though I feel dirty unless I wash my hands. If I touch an animal (cat or dog), have to wash my hands.

I don't like standing on cracks, sometimes while driving on the highway I'll cross my toes each way while passing lights while I'm not sure why. I try not to hit cats eyes while changing lanes on the highway. I'll follow old wives tales such as if I spill salt I'll throw some over a shoulder after.

If I use someone else's keyboard though I feel dirty unless I wash my hands. If I touch an animal (cat or dog), have to wash my hands.

I also hate dirty hands. Will go wash them at work even if I have touched something my brain considered messy (ie cat litter in its bag). Also have to wash my face with a cloth rather then running water. I freak out if running water goes on my face. Strangely I can go swimming or walk in the rain though and not worry about it.
Also im bad for triple checking gas, electrical applicances, door locks before i go to bed or leave the house... its not necessarily a bad thing might make me late a bit for work/bed but its saved my house getting robbed and burning down at least once or twice.

I double check appliances to make sure they are off right after cooking. I turn it off and turn away to do something then have to check again to make sure its off. Might have something to do with almost burning the house down as a kid though with a pan of oil ...
Trash / Recycle Bin MUST be empty.

Funnily enough, I can't stand when people use the term 'Obsessive Compulsive Disorder' correctly.

OCD is an anxiety disorder, with its most common and well-known symptom being the compulsion to relieve anxiety by committing a ritual (e.g. washing hands, touching objects, placing things in a particular order. You can't 'have an OCD', you have OCD and your symptoms will be certain behaviours. It sounds so retarded when people say "I have so many OCD's" or "I have an OCD".

Also, what most of you are talking about appears to be Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, not Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Yeah it's true just having some habit or superstition isn't OCD. The guy I told you about with the operating systems... it isn't just that thing, it is many things. He has to double check his computer is locked every time he walks out of a room, he has to go back down to the car to make sure it's locked. It gets worse when his work has been more stressful. And he takes pills for it. Not just some pills, a lot of f***ing pills, like 80 bucks a week of drugs. He can't just have one can of pepsi or one cigarette, he has to have 5. He's a programmer, the first couple weeks of any job he spends configuring 10 different IDEs to find the best one, and don't think about asking him to make a change to some other code, cos he will spend a few days reorganising that code and changing the tabs and everything. He constantly goes on diets and counts calories and all kinds of bulls***. He checks his internet banking several times a day to make sure nothing has happened in it. He owns 4 guitars and is about to buy another one. He keeps buying more cats and dogs, I think though partially to buy him time with his wife to not give her the babies.
One time I went to his office and made everything on his desk into a mirror image of where it used to be, he almost killed me. He even notices if his mouse is in the wrong spot.

oh yeh, I'm not saying I have a clinically diagnosed actual OCD for my handwashing thing, not even close. It's just a handy way to describe what is a sort of weird behavioural pattern. I suspect most people are using it in that context rather than in the 'real' sense of the word.

ok well maybe the real interpretation of OCD is inaccurate for this but what I meant is what most people have posted.
should they be called idiosyncrasies? or OCPD's according to Crizane.
But maybe they do qualify, what would a psychologist say? (paging BillyH)
either way it's interesting to see that there are some similarities among our weird "habits".

oh and I'm also a bit of a hand washer. Lots of it during cooking, like between every item I dice and also with the kitty litter thing. I haven't touched anything except a plastic bag and a kitty litter shovel but I got to wash.

I eat the same number of M&Ms on each side of my mouth, or halves if it's an odd number, I try also to even out the colours as much as possible to make it fair. I don't think this is OCD, it just makes sense.

Hahaha, love it!

I'm pretty OCD myself...mostly the same things as others (checking electrical equipment is off, keeping my house clean, hanging clothes according to size and colour, etc) but with a few additions...

1. If something is hanging awkwardly, even if it's just a magnet on the fridge or the ipod dock on the table, I have to straighten it. I also can't stand draws that are half open, or cupboards that aren't closed properly, even if they're sliding ones and it doesn't really matter. Don't get me started on rubbish that is sitting next to the bin (due to a poor shot) rather than in it.

2. I always put things back exactly where they came from and I don't like it when things are moved - I always used to know if my sisters had touched my things when I was younger.

3. I can't stand bad grammar. A friend had a facebook status update yesterday that said "why are boys so unorganised" and I desperately wanted to inform her that the word she is really looking for is "disorganised" (someone else got in before me though so it was all ok...). In addition, I judge people who say they are "good thankyou" rather than "well thankyou" when I ask them how they are they are doing.

4. When I'm making a sandwich, I have to make sure the two slices of bread I choose to make the sandwich are the same thickness, and I order different toppings in a set order (usually meat, cheese, salad). I only ask for one sandwich topping at a time if I go to Subway for example so that they put the toppings/salads on in the correct order.

5. I brush my teeth every morning and night, but if I come home for lunch, I have to brush my teeth before I go out again. I have a blanket rule of brushing my teeth every time before I leave the house, even if I've just done them an hour earlier, haven't eaten anything, and am just going to the corner store.

6. I match the colour of my elastic hair tie and underwear to the colour and style of my outfit.

7. I have three separate washing baskets for dirty clothing - one for whites, one for colours, and one for towels/bed linen. But that's mostly for practical reasons when I do the washing once a week.

8. When I write the date, I have to write it as "04/09/10" - I can't just write "4/9/10".

I'm sure there's a million and one other OCD things I do, I just do them so often I don't realise it.

EDIT: And if I write a post and then find a spelling error, I have to fix it...

Hahah this is hilarious.

My mice need to have their hoppers filled with as much food as physically possible. It's hard to resist the urge to fill the hoppers in cages that say NO EXTRA FOOD (they're measuring how much feed the mice consume).

A lot of stuff people do aren't really OCD just habit (probably like the above).

Same size slices of bread? hahaha

Yeah, it's a bit ocd - then again, i lost some weight a couple of years ago and am trying not to regain it so i count calories. If a slice of bread looks thicker than other slices (like with the bakery bread at coles), i have to remind myself i ate more calories than the average slice of bread calorie reading on the packet.

It's probably really a mild eating disorder (EDONS - eating disorder otherwise not specified), though i've got a bmi of 19.0 which is ok and i've never been diagnosed with anything.

Most of the other stuff is just stuff i do - i don't have to but i prefer to. It is only considered an actual disorder or OCD (rather than a personality trait or OCPD) when it interferes with daily functioning (i.e. effects you negatively or significantly effects those around u) and my ways don't seem to.
