Topic: Unreal Engine on iPhone 4

This demo's pretty awesome, especially for a limited set of hardware like the iPhone 4 (well, not for a mobile anyway). I've been playing the demo and it runs pretty smooth but chugs a little in dense scenes, but it's still pretty damn impressive.

From PocketGamer:
Following on from its talk at GDC 2010 about the problems of porting its C++ game engine to iPhone, Epic Games has finally announced that Unreal Engine 3 now works on iPhone.

Demonstrating its new Project Sword game, which is being developed by Chair, who made the Shadow Complex XBLA game, the graphics running on an iPhone 4 were amazing.
Epic's tech demo is up on the store. Not much gameplay though. I took some screenshots: promoted forum item

apple needs to do what ninty do, and get some 1st/2nd party developers to pump out some amazing games

Oh man, that does look good. I just find trying to play any 1st person games difficult on a phone.

Looks really nice. I'm hoping like crazy that Android starts to get the kind of attention that the iPhone gets from developers like id and Epic. Makes me jealous.

By the way, is it only Java you can program with for Android?

iphone4 has a pretty powerful CPU though 1Ghz.... i should be picking mine up this weekend or early next week cant wait! I had a play around with a work mates iphone 4 and i was extremely impressed with the screen resolution and quality of video, pictures, browsing and build quality.

I also tested the death grip and we could replicate it but were only able to get it from 4 bars to 1 and we were still able to make calls clearly.

All this from an ex-Android fan boy.

Is anybody familiar with the technology behind this? Is it just a classic rendering process at a lower resolution and hence runnable with less hardware?

but only can draw 1/3rd the amount of triangles a second that the galaxy S can. i really hope something like this gets ported over to android.

Can Android games be programmed in C++? Cause that would allow Epic to port it pretty well.

Yeah, Android's got an NDK which lets you write in C++. It's been around for a while now.

Yeah, that looks like it would be awkward as f*** in a serious firefight. Visuals looks stunning though. I reckon something like Dragons Lair would work well on a fone gameplay wise.

I've said it time and again, unless there's some sort of trigger for your index finger, FPSs don't work on touch screen devices. But the demo is still pretty awesome.

I wonder how quickly it drains the battery?

You can use C++, but Android handsets have too much variance in 3D capabilities for Epic or id to bother with it right now.

Even if the Galaxy S GPU is better than iPhone's (I have no idea), that's only one handset. Apple will continue to dominate the "high-quality games on phone" sector for quite a whiles yet.

PC's have always come in different capability flavours. Tech can scale running on the same platform. Just now it's a little bit more interesting. :D

This is the biggest plus of the iPhone imo. Standardised hardware, big companies can get their games out to the masses with the least effort, so they do for iPhone what they won't bother with for other devices. That and iPhone uses are probably more willing to fork out cash for apps.

Unless this Playstation branded Android phone rumoured to come out at the end of the year turns out to be decent. Then we should hopefully see some more high-end developer interest.

But anyway, I probably shouldn't talk about Android too much in an iPhone thread. It s***s me when it happens the other way around.

Could probably map a volume key to a trigger? I normally rest phones on my index fingers curled over a bit when I view them side on.
