Interesting news this morning from our ISPS. They have agreed to drop their objections to the US FTA and will sort out at a later stage the process on how they'll block access to websites that violate copyright..

Trade Minister Mark Vaile said some details - such as when internet providers were required to block websites which allegedly breached another person's copyright - could be clarified by a special regulation.
Bye bye tv. I like that, you will only have to 'allegedly breach' someone's copyright to have your site knocked off Australia's internet.

EDIT: on second read, it seems to be talking about sites ISPs host, not merely allow you to access over the internet.

So all it would take is for someone to complain about say a site like suprnova and ISP's would be required to block access to it???

Your s***ting me right??
I'm so thinking of moving to sweden/switzerland...

*hugs WinMX tightly and prays for steady stream of pRon to continue unabated..

What next?

Australia is already firmly wedged in America's arse crack, trust us to follow suit when it comes to kneejerk reactions to so-called copyright breaches. I mean whats a few hundred MP3's between friends.
It's not like Britney needed the loot anyways.
Meh!

i thought bye bye tv cause i originally thought they were talking about blocking access to foreign pirate sites.. so channel 7 and ten and 9 would sook about all the tv copyright violation going on on the net, with the prime source being TVT and BTEFNET (and suprnova)'s websites. Since there's no provision in australian law for recording tv shows they would easily be able to have them shut-down from australia's perspective....

What I find ironic is that the music and movie industries have finally started to see the light with the release of legal file sharing networks & technologies (Snocap & Weedshare come to mind). Not to mention the spate of recent studies debunking some of their theories on "pirate related losses". And to top it off independant surveys of musicians and artists that show that even they are divided as to whether file sharing actually hurts their music and their profits. Oh and of course the setbacks they've been having where the Induce Act in the US got knocked on the head and file sharing *networks* have been declared legal (ala video recorders).

*phew* Sorry about the rant I just had to get that out. It really looks like there was rational progress and it may wind up all torn down :(

so, say I had a picture on my personal webspace that someone else created (take the rofl chopter as an example), does that mean I can get ass raped? Or is this kind of only for juarez & stuff?
also this pic never gets old in juarez related threads!

Yes exactly. For example, i could just send an email to whoever owns comindico at the moment and say those pirates at qgl are hosting material that i own the copyright on, i swear on my good name i do, here is what it looks like:

http://www.qgl.org/images/themes/default/[forum]banner_top_left.gif

and they would have to shut down qgl until qgl prove they aren't violating my copyright.

I love the way the presumption of innocence has been thrown out the door. Drown them to see if they are witches.

Because pre-FTA, we had local content laws that required that a certain percentage of TV is produced in Australia.
