comedy family first/greens option

unless you live in ipswich or in the centre of a capital city both votes will actually be for a major party and you're just a sad poser

That's not true, by voting for a party that has no chance of winning, you take a vote away from someone who does, thereby encouraging them to change their policy so it's more in line with what you want, isn't democracy grand?

For those who lament having to vote: why did you enrol?

Greens as my first preference not that they have a chance in hell of winning the seat here in Hinkler for the lower house, but they stand a chance for a Senate seat.

After the Greens probably the Democrats, then maybe one of the independents in the Senate then the ALP.

So what rukh really means is he is voting for the ALP, but he likes to make the counters move his paper round lots.

Democrats, Greens, ALP and the rest I'll decide on the day. Liberal gets my last preference, unless there are some of those nut job parties on the card.

Also,

It's thinking like that that makes it true.

I'd love to know how many people vote LIB or ALP just because they think voting the way they actually want will have no effect? If all of those people actually voted the way they wanted to, we'd have a lot more greens and democrats in the lower house I reckon...

How so?

By voting for the Greens you put the spotlight on issues that otherwise wouldn't get a look in by the other major parties.

heh, _letting_ the gst in... way to shift the blame! i blame labour for losing the election & allowing the libs to implement the gst! ;]

i'm not very political, i know it important but the mechanics of it bore me senseless. ya just see so many complex issues glossed over with buzzwords, rhetoric & finger pointing. people just polarise & feel content they are right because there is a whole lot of other polarised bandwagon jumpers to agree with them. understanding the issue is more or less irrelevant.
that said, i'll vote labour. i just can't stand howard... he was a whiney lil dweeb when he promised frazer that he would _never_ run for #1 job & he is still a lying whiney lil dweeb. a crap reason to vote i know but its the only reason i have :(

Obes:

I intend giving my 1st preferences to the Greens (last election it was the Democrats, the ALP before that and the Liberals before that) even though they have no chance of winning Hinkler because it'll be one more first preference vote to a minor party (with policies I agree at least partly with) and not for a major party. Give them something to think about and worry over come the following election. If by a miracle the Green candidate wins (Hinkler includes Bundaberg and Gladstone...farmers and union workers...fat chance of that happening) then all the better.

As for Bob Brown's policies on games and the like....I'm not sure I understand.

Here's the relevant piece of policy from the Greens site:
3.18 imposing a rating and censorship system (similar to film) for computer games and related leisure services

i.e. adding an R18+ rating. Personally I'd prefer seeing the censorship part removed for a purely recommendation rating system but at least the Greens are talking about it.

I've done a quick Google search on Bob Brown internet computer games but couldn't find much that would make me vote against the Greens because of it. Got a url or something? Not that I'd be voting for Bob Brown personally anyway. He's not up for re-election this time around and he's from Tasmania not Queensland.

And unlike some people I don't vote for a party based purely upon whether I like the probable leader of that party.

im not going to make a legit vote for a simple reason

lets face it there are 2 main parties lathams one and john howards party now i dont much about either or parties policys mainly because of what ive seen ( ive sone some research ) none of them speak about what really interests me, those things are censorship public transport and adult entertainment, and im damn serious about all 3 of those things, i dont have a family so they can shove all there family s*** up there arse and i dont have children ( if one as saying they want to implament a program where you need a license to have a kid then sure ) and i dont plan on having kids, school funding, howards turned school funding into a joke so i ignore everything on the subject, that and im not in school,

now there is no real point in voting for any of the other parties because they just wont get in.. its a fact dont bother arguing it with like "oh yeah but if you dont vote them and everyone took that attitude then of course they will never get in" its not about that and dont tell me im f***ing selfish either because voting is all about being selfish and what the political parties are willing todo for you as an australian citizen, im fairly confident that who ever gets in will look after our country just dandy that or the u.s.a will step in and f*** them over ( teeheheh political humour ) so voting for the greens is ultimately useless.. hahah greens with power that will be the day.

so all in all to sum it up, neither of the 2 parties do anything for me and the other parties are a wasted joke so im gonna draw a big smiley face on my voting slip drop it off the box and doing all that im required todo.

thanks for listening,
ps. those of you that are honestly effected by who is in power should deffinately take into serious consideration who they are going to vote for and not just go by who there parents say or who there parents vote for, i see soo many young people who will honestly be effected by what partie gets in vote for the wrong one

also if i was forced to choose, id pick howard on the fact that the country needs to suffer more before they realise how important picking the right person is or latham because i think he could kick howards ass in a fight.

groydis: Well obviously you're entitled to your opinion and it's true that in the House of Representatives it's pretty much a battle between the ALP and the coalition so sure you might decide that a smiley face is good enough for you there.

However there will be at least 1 and possibly 2 Senate seats that could go to any of minor parties including the Greens, the Democrats, Family First, Pauline Hanson, One Nation or maybe an independent. Or there's a small chance that both could go to the major parties anyway though that's less likely.

If you don't want to go to the bother of filling in all the boxes below the line on the Senate ballot (and there's going to be 50 of them) then you could just place a "1" in one box above the line with the minor party that you feel best suits your needs.

Due to tradition in Australia, the executive government is formed in the House of Representatives so there's not even a problem if you fear a minor party winning government if they somehow win either control of the Senate or "balance of power" there.

Sure, if you hate the major parties and don't believe your vote can make a difference then the Lower House vote might be considered useless. The Senate vote though can still be important.

Of course it's up to you though.

Well for future reference (hehe) it's really not that big a deal. The only people I have ever heard of having problems were those who did sign up and missed a election.

ALP. Everyone already knows why. If it would actually make a difference, I'd be closely leaning towards voting for something along the lines of the Socialist Party Australia (there are a number of things they stand for that I don't really agree with, though).
