Good Old Games is a sweet-sounding service that aims to resurrect old classics and make them playable on modern operating systems. They offer cheap (under US$10), DRM free downloadable versions of a bunch of classic games, with no weird territorial restrictions, so anyone in the world can get them.

They've just added a new game to their growing catalogue - Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition. If you're too much of a newb to remember it, check out our game page or check out the official trailer from Gog.com.

Now I keep thinking about all the oldschool games I'd love to see reduxed like this so I can play them again - Speedball 2, Syndicate, Populous, the original Sierra Quest games. Get on it, publishers!

I'd like to see games like this but at least with updated resolution. I know back in the day the libs they were working with were probably limited to 640x480 but it would be great if they were updated just for resolution. I'm not talking about adding shaders or even colours/detail and all that, only resolution so they don't look so pixelated. I'd be happy if the avatar models are only 100 polys - but at least the edges of the polys would look smooth.

Syndicate Wars would be awesome if they could make it work properly (not stupidly fast) on my computer.

Its the first thing I though of after reading your first sentence.

You might be able to use the Duke High Resolution Pack (AG download) which works with eduke: http://www.eduke32.com/

640x480! When I was a kid we dreamed about things like 640x480 and "models" that have "polys".

This kind of legacy support is awesome. Would be awesome if older console manufacturers would open up their secrets so licensed emulators could be constructed and a similar service could be launched selling old N64/PlayStation/Xbox games for use on a PC.

Dan - I doubt console manufacturers would want to give people an incentive not to buy their own hardware. Hence why you can buy Xbox games on Xbox Live Marketplace, PS1 games on the PlayStation Store, and NES/SNES/N64 games on the Wii Shop.

I don't have a Wii or PS3 though - but if they had some of their old games available on PC for $5 a pop running in an emulator that I could download (what, they'd be like 2mb per game prolly), I'd be much more inclined to send them my money.

I have a soft spot for old Duke 3D. I made a map for it that some company from Canada put on a best of the net CD way back when.

trog - Yeah, but then you'd have one less reason to consider buying their console. Plus on the PC piracy would be a bigger concern (people are already pirating this stuff, so why would they start paying for it).

I have to agree, Syndicate and the American Revolt expansion were far better than Syndicate Wars.

blood, syndicate wars, duke 3d, descent 1 & 2, carmageddon, heretic, xwing vs. tie fighter, Mechwarrior 2 + GBL expansion, DeusEx (sp), monkey island & full throttle show all be remade with a new graphics engine and sounds.

I would actually buy them. There would be more games but can't think of them right now..

I always liked shadow warrior over duke nukem. I'd love an updated version of Raptor: Call of the Shadows and Red Alert 1/2 for modern graphics cards & CPUs but apart from them I didn't play many video games as a kid.

I'd like to see an updated version of:

Populous: The beginning (same developers as syndicate wars, i.e. Bullfrog).

Do you need to own the full game to use the texture pack ?

I ended up making a quake 3 level of Hollywood Holocaust.

^^ Texture packs are usually just that, textures. I don't know about the D3d one but you do for the one for quake (it asks for pak1 during install).

Battletoads was a pile of crap. Street Gangs/River City Ransom was better.
