DOOM 4 will join the award-winning series which has consistently topped sales charts throughout the world.

id Software is looking for talented, ambitious and passionate individuals eager to join its accomplished team of developers working on the industry’s most innovative and anticipated games. I think the fact that they're re-hashing Doom again indicates their emphasis on technology rather than gaming. It would be nice to see them create a (mostly) new concept that still fits in to the FPS genre.

No, it really doesn't.

Yeah, pretty much. I put the demo on after upgrading to my new PC and it looked mediocre.

I saw the headline and immediately thought "they're a bit late for April 1st"

Seriously, how much work needs to be done to deconstruct the massive stigma held against them for Doom 3's infamy?

Also, what happened to 'Rage?'

I personally would like to see Doom 4 go back to it's roots with the old style gameplay we came to love doom and doom 2 for. Running around, killing many many monster trying to find cards to open doors. They could make it really really complex now and they could really even make it continue right after doom 2 did.

You've gone to hell, killed the leader there and you come back to earth and now you gotta clean up the remaining forces left that are straggling around trying to finish the job while you've been gone.

sounds simple enough to work for me. Also I did like doom 3 but it didn't feel too much like a doom game to me. take away the monsters and its a totally different game

i agree with most that d3 was too dark, but it wasnt hard to overcome. IMO it was an awesome game that had me hooked. I have played through it so many times, i especially love the plasma gun, it kicked ass.

I dunno if its just me but the mouse control felt weird in d3 also the enemies were really easy.

It wasn't the darkness in Doom 3 that put me off, it was the fact it was a boring, repetitive game. I forced myself to finish it, just so I could see the cyberdemon, but I really didn't enjoy it much. The hell level was pretty sweet, but then it was back to the boring drudgery of shiny metal walls and floors and dark corners and the same monsters jumping out from behind the same doors ad nauseum.

They need to learn a bit about building suspense and making a game scary. Usually what makes it scary is what you don't see, and what doesn't happen, rather than what is in front of you. Opening a door that you're SURE something is going to jump out at you from behind, and then, nothing jumps out. Hearing sounds or seeing something half glimpsed in the distance, but then when you get there, theres nothing there. It builds up, and it gets under your skin, and because you don't have the release of something jumping out at you, the uneasyness is compounded, to the point where you're jumping at strange shadows on the wall. The start bits of Doom 3 were like this, and I really dug it, but then it just turned into crap.

obes no you get f***ed buddy :D

i do agree that doom3 was too repetitive with it's imps n zombies, but that just made the bits with other monsters better... especially the bits that would have been cut-scenes in older games but in the d3 engine they rendered into the gameplay. also, what fps isn't repetitive with it's enemies?

there mighta been too many imps... but at least they looked fkn awesome with complex models & awesome skins... *cough* hl2 bugs are just a bunch of triangles *cough* :D

I found Doom 3 to be repetitive, boring and monster placement pretty predictable. So there was very little suspense. It could have been much better, but is wasn't.

Also, it should have been Co-op from ground up. Hopefully id are hearing the public and Doom 4 will be.

Surely someone would have ported the Doom1&2 levels to the Doom3 engine by now?

The darkness was fun to whine about, but ultimately the gameplay was just a bit lame.

Once I got over the awesomeness of it with 5.1 sound I found it repetitive like everyone else.
I hope they go in a different direction for this (doubt they will). FPS games in general are a bit dull at the moment.

Doom3 was kinda like the SW Pre-quel trilogy .. it looked a bit like Doom but it wasnt. All of the relentless, viceral awesomeness of Doom2 was missing and it had some fundamental flaws which we are all sick of talking about.

It makes me sad that iD have to resort to recycling all their franchises can't they think of something new?

At least Doom3 didnt have Jar Jar Binks and it didnt take my childhood and stomp on it.

I'd really like nothing else to see them expanded on the quake 2 / 4 / quake wars universe.

Pretty much when the humans made contact witht the strogg. Id software have my thumbs up for sci-fi action games :)

Just watch the intro move from quake 2, still stands out as one of the best intro's ever. plus they do f***in awesome radio coms chatter.

What troll obes? unlike alot of people i didn't sit around having a sad about ONOES FLASHlIGHT i got into the atmosphere of the game and had a really good game experience. It was scary and had good suspense, not saying it can't be done better, but it was a good game none the less.

Man that Quake2 intro brings back memories. What was the story of Quake again? Oooooh man I can remember playing the original... faaark those were the days... when you were happy to shrink your screen down a little so the game would run more smoothly, because you were THAT keen on playing the game instead of just looking at the glossiness of it all.

Same, still my favourite game vid/intro of all time. Was pretty funny how they went from quake with virtually no discernible storyline at all to this awesomeness in one game.

Also, Doom3 did indeed rock, but as has been said repeatedly above, it really missed that massive rooms full of monsters to kill thing the originals had going. They should have created a new IP for id tech 4, something even scarier! :O D: Either way Doom 4 should be great, looking forward to it! (Also looking forward to RtCW2 and RAGE!! Hurry up id!)

Doom 3 if played at 11-12 at night was awesome. During the day it was useless and hard to see.
Try playing at nighttime, much better mood/more immersive.

Doom 3 must be played in a Pitch Black Room, >= 4 speakers/headphones, >= Nvidia Geforce 6800GT (71.89_win2kxp_english.exe), >= 140Hz 800x600 flat screen CRT monitor, stereoscopic glasses (71.89_3dstereo.exe), without cross hairs, on Verteran skill level, and with No saving between levels. It is the most intense game ever created. Complete Hell under these conditions.

Here is how to fix John Carmack's reverse when using 3D glasses;
set r_useTurboShadow 0
set r_useShadowVertexProgram 0

If you own an LCD you are playing it cheap - they might be able to do 2ms response (>200hz); but this is an individual pixel response time - LCDs have a full screen response time of 60Hz. Standard glasses require >= 120Hz full screen response time. Unfortunately they no longer manufacture professional CRTs because standards are too low.

They are now bringing out 3D LCD monitors (which rely upon a spatial steroscopic 3D effect rather than a temporal steroscopic 3D effect), and Nvidia are starting to support these instead. The other mainstream stereoscopic technology availabe to gamers is the 3D headset (> $100).

Half Life 2 is also very good with glasses (not sure what it is like without them), but it makes it clear that id tech 4 lighting was superior.

Of course the critical enviromental factor for Doom 3 is a pitch black room, and if you couldn't work that out, it is probably because of your LCD backlight.

Popularity does not make something good - this is not a communist post.

I found it to be highly predictable, you can only have monsters spawn behind you so many times before you catch on. I played it in the a dark room with decent hardware, it was still highly repetitive.

I could get the same gameplay experience by just sitting in a pitch black room.
