Researchers at Melbourne's Swinburne University are using the 3-D graphics engine at the core of first-person shooter Quake 3 to visualise real-time statistics such as CPU usage and network traffic.

The L3DGEWorld project allows users to walk through a 3-D world interacting with computers on the network and, for example, shoot suspiciously behaving servers to enforce a firewall quarantine.

Definitely one worth keeping an eye on. Since these guys have been given funding from Cisco for the project this could turn out to be a very cool and hopefully handy app. promoted forum item

This has already been done before by RMIT students. They basically took the Doom source, and used it to represent processes (for nix). Each monster represented a process, with lower numbered processes representing a higher strength creep. When run as root, you can guess what happens when you pass the game.

heh, reminds me of when i was a student we had to do some packet logging or something and to do that we had to generate some network traffic. Played Doom2 deathmatch for a while.

Lucky I didn't code otherwise I'd make it run "rm -rf /" when you downed the first boss if it was running as root.
