EA have announced a new title in the Battlefield series - Battlefield Heroes. From the press release:
Battlefield Heroes is a brand new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942(tm) and Battlefield 2(tm). It's fun cartoon-style graphics and gameplay caters to players of all skill levels. It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customization and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.
Oh yeh, and it's free, due "summer 2008" Euro-time, so we can expect it in the harsh Aussie winter.

The official site has a little bit more. There's only one piece of visual so far, a shot of the cover of a games mag. It's strangely reminiscent of something...

haha. bf games are already completely full of undesirables. bringing a free bf game to the series is sure to end in tears

having the tf2 heavy on the cover as well is quite hilarious

WTF?

Looks like it's gonna be a TF2 rip-off.

I don't think it will be. Looks like it will have planes and tanks and stuff. It is just 'copying' the cartoon graphics which weren't new with TF2 either...Obviously it is supposed to be a competitor for TF2 though.

hmmm not wat i was expecting next from the bf series, its been a steady downhill decline since 1942.

i woulda loved maybe bf1914 or bf1943 to be honest.

but hey, gotta jump on the cartoon band wagon i guess

TF2 were the first really to successfully dominate the market using the cell shading cartoon style characters/worlds in the latest gen FPS games.

Everything had been about realism for so long.

Looks like an attempt to cash in after the massive success Valve just had with TF2 imo. Shame on you EA shame on you!

Will have to wait for some actual footage though to be sure.

BF1914 ftw!
that'd be so cool with all the unreliable weaponry and slow planes and leather helmets.

BBC News has some interesting info on the game.

Ben Cousins, senior producer at Dice, told BBC News that no adverts would be appear in the game itself.

"They wouldn't work inside the fictional world. Instead, adverts will appear on the website and the 'front-end' of the game."

Am I the only person very optimistic about this? It's free, I'm really not going to bitch that much. Sure, it looks similar to TF2, but that's hardly a bad thing.

My 8-ball says that you'll have to pay for the booster packs that come out, inevitably named 'Desert assault', or 'Road to (insert place here)'.

Yeh, I probably won't play it but I'm very interested because free games are awesome. It's good to see PC developers pursuing alternative business models (well, "traditional" ones anyway; Asian MMOs have been doing this forf***ingever).

Yeah, even if it's only kind of fun, I'm going to give my support, because this is the sort of business model I'd like to see succeeding. And if it does, then it's likely that more developers will follow suit. Seeing a few ads on the menus of a free game is a price I'm more than happy to pay.

What does Shame and EA have to do with one another? EA has been shameless for at least 10 years now.

But the Asian model is via monthly subscriptions isn't it?

Ergo, not likely to work in the United States of Europe,Australia and America.

Edit: But yes i wholeheartedly agree with a company trying something different.

Not always, there are a few MMOs that are free to download and play, and you're charged for extra content. Maple Story comes to mind.

Hell, I'm pretty sure that Fury follows this model now too.

Aah fair enuff. Always a bit dubious about that model. The temptation to mudflate would be very strong. I see images of Magic The Gathering already.

I've just started to get into BF2 and there are still some good severs out there.

As long as the "Heroes" version doesn't cost to play online I'm happy to pay for the "strap-on" packs.

"We put a different twist on this Battlefield game going with the
cartoon-style graphics and gameplay," added Ben Cousins

That explains it then. They are on drugs

if it's TF2 with vehicles it's TF2 +fix

you'd have to add in extra ea disapointment into the mix.. but that's Valve product all around anyway. the masses aren't going to notice.

win win!!

is EA the most hated game company in the world? I'd be surprised if it wasn't.
