About Insurgency...
Insurgency (INS) is a total conversion mod for Valve Software's Half-Life 2, powered by the Source Engine. INS immerses the player in an intense online combat experience. Set on the modern battlefields, Insurgency simulates infantry combat that encourages the use of teamwork and tactics to close with and destroy the enemy.

Insurgency... (edit by trog: or download from AusGamers).

A mod trying for realistic modern combat. Usually realistic is boring but hopefully these guys can get a decent balance of fun and realism. Just waiting for local mirrors. promoted forum item

well, gave it a whirl this evening for a bit, even got to team up with rubba (get a mic ya cheap biatch) an apart from the expected retard doing deliberate TK wang, has a lot of potential!

That said, HDR on these maps can seriously put you a disadvantage
I'm not overly keen on HDR after playing DiRT as it has a tendency to "overburn"

Counterstrike 3 ?
If you wanted no crosshair, no shooting while sprinting, no jumping while sprinting, slow movement, tactical, one shot = die to be what counterstrik 3 is then yes, its counterstrik 3.

It has a steep learning curve and pubbies are already complaining about how it needs a minimap etc but all of their complaints so far (that ive seen) relate to things you will learn to work around using the games system, which I guess is its attempt at realism. For example, no minimap. Instead there is a commander waypoint system with a compass type hud thing. I like alot of the things it does, very minimal hud is nice too.

Huge holes in what I just said because the gameplay is quite complex and it would take ages to talk about but its definately worth a try if you have the patiance to learn how things work. If suddenly being dead and having absolutely no idea where you were shot from is going to make you quit straight away then dont even bother :)

sounds kind of like ghost recon where you have a compass that tells you which way you're meant to go to get to whatever it is you're meant to get to.

The mod definately has potential to go far if they keep heading in the right direction. As an initial Beta it is fairly impressive already.

Do you need to purchase Half-Life 2, or is having CS: Source sufficient to run this mod?

I believe ravn0s is correct, but we have two phat new shiny Steam servers for BigPond users that should have all the Steam content.

Can't be any worse than CS Source's "can't see the f***ing HUD cause of HDR"?

Can't see health, armour, timer, nor money:

I have read that they are putting in a TK-Kick system as soon as they can make a patch for it, they acknowledge its a problem.

This game is gun porn++ Ive never played a game where shooting guns was so satisfying, s*** gets SLAMMED when you shoot it. One shot and enemies go down. In this the benefit of very careful and tactical shooting is immediately obvious. Spraying and praying does not work but getting one good shot is all you need to kill an enemy so it rewards careful firing. I love the HUD too, when you have a good commander the system works really well but when you have a s*** one you are totally lost on maps. I think that as players learn the maps and people get better at commander most people will come around to it.

Enjoying it alot right now.

Just confirming that I didn't have to follow that guide which was posted for the Steam content servers to download off GameArena (I'm on Bigpond ADSL). It Just Worked.

so far I have found that internode generally has better players who are more willing to use voice com. Also, the games get about 100% better after midnight. :(

That Baghdad map makes me chug like a bitch on the big long street littered with rooted cars :(

I am also getting REALLY sick of "connection problem" drops from the server... Had 3 in the last 30 mins of trying to play :/

Is anyone else having trouble actually SEEING anyone? I mean the game is so damn dark I can't tell a person from a garbage bin, and when I do tell which one is which, I can't see their clothes to tell if they're on my team or not. I tried increasing the gamma but all that seems to to is make the bright things overly bright and the dark areas are still dark and everyone is a black outline untll I get right up close by which time I'm dead.

* CHANGED: alltalk is defaulted to "0"

Haha @ latest bugfix.

I was sitting there coordinating taking over a strategic point with some other players over the microphone, only to find that heaps of enemies happened to be rushing the same point all the time.

Turns out we were on different teams, talking to each other ... without realising, causing continual rushes.

cool idea but it got old really fast. The sound seems to be broken on my system but none of the other hl2 mods are. In headphone mode it's tinny and almost like the sound point is about 10 feet in FRONT of the character.

the game does have a steep learning curve and some nasty crashes, on the first day of playing I swore never to play again. My friend roped me into having a game cos he dl'd it and we've played every day since.. theres a few crash bugs on the map change that happen every now and again but it's no big deal.. I mean, it IS a beta you know.

Even though it's only been out a little bit, once you learn the maps it's a lot more tolerable and the node servers generally have better players on them.. the game relies on communication no hand holding with a radar that tells you where everyone is.. you learn to identify before shooting.. Even with a few of the people using voice com people generally follow the orders given by the commander, but if your commander sucks and it's a new map it's a bit harder but people are generally pretty good with the team work and you can stomp the other team out due to the fact your teamwork is superior. The game is a nice mix between red orchestra and america's army.. it's got potential, I'd suggest everyone to give it a try for a bit even if you get rolled, you learn nice places to hold for a minute or so, kill the attackers, then move up or fully storm the next point.

I've been giving this game a bash and it is great.

So much more room for positioning and tactics, thinking about what you are going to do pays off alot more then CS. This game is less about aiming skill and more about your position. Aiming helps, but a monkey in a good spot will beat you to the punch more often then not.
Makes for some great team work moments.

I like it.

Didn't like it at first.
Too hard to see people/get shot from nowhere.

After awhile you get used to not playing like a one man army and teamwork really pays off.

ek, rubba and myself have had some awesome 3-man squads happening using vent (and use team-talk for general broadcasts to help team).
Full SAS movie style movements with covering and moving up halls etc.
Absolutely mow down the other team by ourselves and win maps repeatedly.

Played with HERMItech and whoop was fun++ too.

Huge learning curve but it's great once you get used to the maps and how to move around cover.
Guns are actually satisfying to use, especially long range, single shot single kill =D

I gave up on team talk when some servers had alltalk turned on, each team was telling the other which site they were defending/capturing etc. Now I just go all commando style & pick a spot to defend & stay there with my ubergun™.
