Reuters are reporting that Yves Guillemot, the CEO of massive French games publisher Ubisoft, has said that Sony will have to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 if they want to ensure they hold on to their share of the console market.

youd think sony would be expecting this kind of attention, and youd think that they actually have a game plan of some sorts, if not they fail at everything.

So what's the verdict. Do you reckon the price is going to drop any time soon?

The real question is when are the blue ray drives going to drop in price. I would assume once they drop the PS3 will also drop.

In other news, man points out that sky is blue.

Sony must be so friggin arrogant to think they can charge $1000 for a ps3.

If we go back to that document that went through the components and their cost prices, (someone?) the cost price of the ps3 was estimated at ~ $900-1000.

The PS3 has been a big catch-22 for Sony, they wanted to include their BlueRay drive to increase the number of them in homes and fight off HD-DVD, but at the same time, because its such a new product, it was always going to push up the price of the PS3.

It just sucks from the perspective of someone who just wants a games console.

if someone wants a game console they can buy an xbox 360.

but if they did drop the price of PS3 it would sell like crazy because all the people holding out would go buy one.

just remember when the N64 came out and the PS1 came out they were both close to a grand. Time ensured that they got cheaper.

The N64 was never close to a grand. From memory it launched at something like $400. And from even scratchier memory the ps1 launched at around $600-700ish.

Yeh, but when they came out there wasn't a whole f***ton of other options. Xbox 360 is (imo) at least a good investment gameplay wise as the PS3 - probably more so short term because there's more decent games available. The Wii is still cool too.

N64 was US$199 at launch

PS1 was US$299

So my guesses were about right.

Price is a factor, sure, but they'd need to release some games on it I actually want to play before I stop holding out and go buy one.

Tekken 6 may make the ps3 worthwhile actually. mms://wmt9-od.stream.ne.jp/vod11/bngi/tk6ac_pv1.wmv

but at a $1000 for ps3 i think ill stick to tekken 5 on the ps2 for a while yet

I'm pretty sure the PS1 was about 700-800 at launch in AUS from memory. I got one about the beginning of 96 for $595 when it dropped in price because I really wanted to get my hands on Street Fighter (the game of the movie), it rocked in arcades but turned out it sucked on the PS, fortunately though I came across games like Wipeout and Tekken which made up for it.

Street Fighter (the game of the movie)

wait are you talking about street fighter the arcade game that the movie was made from or are you talking about a new string of 'street fighter' developed to role play the movie?

Tekken tag is awesome and so is Tekken 5 but I'm used to the ps2 controls so when I go to arcades I suck balls.

I bought a PS1 when they started to come out (around november 1994) and it costed me around 800$.

PS2 I remember was 999$ in singapore airport at the dutyfree section in June 2001 (before it came out in aus)

N64 was between 400 and 500$

Dreamcast I think was around 550$

Saturn was about 700-800$

It was good on arcades so thats what I thought when I first saw it on the PS. The PS vesion was pretty average in comparison to the arcade version but I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised. You could probably pick this game up for about $5 off ebay nowdays though.
