Sony announced last week that the PlayStation 3 has generated over $33 million dollars of sales in Australia since its release:
Commenting on the results, Daniel Morse from GfK stated, "Our data revealed that in a matter of just ten days the PLAYSTATION 3 created a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in Australia. This spending continued into the second week of trading, resulting in sales of 27,083 PLAYSTATION 3 consoles in just ten days."
By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 30,421 units - in just four days.

I'd love to see their "data" or "data" compiled by an objective source.

so basically it got snapped.

Also, I love the spin - talking about sales $ rather than numbers. Easy to do when they're $999 each!

well in the end it is all about the dollars to them... if they sell less numbers but still make the same money as the competition...

The data is compiled by industry standard GfK; it's pretty much objective.

true, but the fact is the more they sell, the more money they lose, and more potential to earn there is.

It is rumoured that the initial machines were costing anywhere from $800-900 US to build. Thats before anything else, just the hardware costs. So you'd guess that they're making a loss on the console and major profit on the games. Most consoles are set up like this, but the PS3 is meant to be a massive loss.

My bad, thought it was figures released by Sony. I still can't see how they sold so many units when the launch was such a massive failure - surely that's an indication that people were just not interested in the PS3?

Or is it more of a case that the ones who could afford a PS3 are the ones least likely to stay up until midnight to get one..

Not necessarily, from what I understand Sony was making a loss to begin with per console, relying on peripheral and game sales (fairly typical with consoles to get the initial market share).

I'd say number of units is what they would be caring about more at the moment, the money comes in later.

Yeah more like people cbf'd staying up till midnight. I'd guess most people that can afford a 1k console would also have a job.

I've got a ps3, theres no way in hell i'd ever go to a midnight launch for any console. :) That being said, i'm not a sony fanboy and i couldn't care less which console is better than the other, as long as they keep me entertained. :)

I don't understand why anyone would go to a midnight launch. In fact I can't understand why they even have them.

The only company to actually make a profit off their hardware sales is Nintendo with the Wii. I'm not sure if Xbox is still losing money off it's hardware sales, but it was at launch.

But yeah, it's amusing they put it in $$ sales, probably because the PS3 is $350 more expensive than the Xbox360 per unit!

thats a pretty high figure considering the cost. its understandable that it didnt sell quite as many as the xbox since the xbox was like $300-$400 cheaper at launch.

Is that figure actual sales, or units shipped to stores though? I've noticed a lot of the time when Sony quotes "sales" figures, the figures are actually just the number of units that have been bought by retail outlets, and not the number of units actually bought by consumers.

I suspect that would be actual sales as the dollars generated would be much lower imagine if it was the wholesale figure. Just a guess, crazy? I dunno.

Khel - I figured that's how they get the numbers for things like number of albums sold etc. It would be a pretty good indicator still.

IT would be a good indicator if you were certain the consoles were selling, but with the ps3 i can't say that they're shipping, as i see piles of them in stores everywhere.

You mean you see piles of display boxes, because no store in their right mind would put the actual stock out on display.

maybe, but not. JB you just pick up the box and walk over to the counter with it.

I don't know, but i don't believe that store purchases and home user purchases will be close on the PS3, just a personal opinion with no facts or figures to back it up other than a complete lack of enthusiasm shown for the console by everyone.

Is the ps3 inside the box that you pick up?

My guess it would be a mish mash of both.
From what I see, Sony are trying to say, 'Hay look, lots of people/stores are buying/carrying our console, so you should too.'

So from that I would think they would make their sales figues look as best as they could. The way I would do it would be to count every unit distributed to stores, then multiply that by the recommended sales price. So you have X amounts of $'s generated from units that are potentially sold.
Then you could say something like, 'We've had $33 million worth of units moved in Australia, omg isnt that ownage!'

Moved to stores isn't sales, and they've used the word sales, that's the whole point.

That said, once they start making a few more thousand of the console, they'll get the manufacturing process cheaper, and the price will drop. once the price is around 600 with a control or 2 you'll probably see a big rush in sales.

As much as i dislike sony, you do need competition, i just wish sony were better competition to make the next xbox alot better.

I'm pretty sure those are just display boxes. My ps3 came wrapped in a plastic rope thing across the top to prevent retailers from opening the box, unless they did display boxes with ps3's in it.

Besides, channel stuffing seems to be the in thing nowdays =)

Crysis coming to ps3 possibly?

They are looking for a PS3 programmer listed in their own jobs page with the responsibility of:

- Development of a Next-Generation GameFramework based on CryEngine 2.0

- Work on various aspects of porting to PS3 and creating solutions to get the utmost out of the PS3

- Cross platform code development.

Personally i'd be impressed if it came out on either the 360 or ps3 and still looked half decent - saves me buying a whole new comp to play it since im still on the old agp boards. =)
