Sony's PlayStation 3 has finally launched in Australia. Though a few months late, Sony reportedly have quite a few preorders, so they're pretty excited about it.

However, The Age are reporting that not many other people are, in a less-than-glowing article about the official midnight launch last night at Myer in Sydney (featuring Sony and Myer bosses):
At midnight, about 40 PS3 buyers had arrived to collect their consoles, causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem.

Desperate producers unashamedly asked the crowd to fake excitement when the cameras were rolling, while a team from 2Day FM let out bogus cheers to convince their radio listeners that a launch extravaganza was underway.
If you have joined the feeding frenzy of the PlayStation 3, let us know what you think of it.

WOAH, 40 buyers lined up.

Suckiest launch ever it seems. Most of the Wii launches had hundreds.

And the other thing is, Sony are trying to say "but it plays bluray too!", to which I respond "why the f*** do I want to spend $45 for a BRD movie which I can pay $20 for on DVD".

I don't care if it's 1920x1080. Or has eleventybillion channel sound. I watch my movies on a 20" iMac with s***ty 10W speakers.

Not a great many people have $1000 to drop for a console. It is pretty hard to justify $1000 to simply play a game or two..

The 60GB PS3 was launched in the US last November with a price tag of $US599 ($740) and costs ¥60,000 ($630) in Japan. The model on sale in Australia will cost $999.95.

Didn't know shipping to Australia costs $200 =(

It is because we are seemingly willing to pay more.

it's more the price relative to the competition...why spend a grand when you can play more, better games on a 360 for half the price?

Similar news at the Myer Melbourne launch with only around 50 units sold after about 150 units were painstakingly moved and readied for sale! You should've seen the number of games which were readied for sale - 200 copies of Motorstorm, Call of Duty 3 and Resistance - and a large number of games which weren't even touched (Sonic, Enchanted Arms, Virtual Fighter 5, World Championship Snooker, etc...). The launch was rather subdued and quet, with the sound system of the PS3 demo unit drowning out the sounds of shuffling feet and staff hardselling HDMI cables. It was all over within one hour.

you would think the store would call there pre-orders and ask them if they are wanting to attend the midnight launch, thats what eb did when i bought my 360, that way that had exactly the number of consoles ready plus the games people were picking up with them, everyone rocked up took a ticket and waited till midnight then the ticket numbers were called out and people got there consoles, sure only abouy 20 people rocked up *this was eb in the brisbane myer centre, i doubt to many people would actually want to rock up to a midnight launch there* but it was still exactly waht i wanted, was in and our within half an hour with no f***ing around, got home and played my xbox till the wee hours of the morning.

Lets not sell a HDMI cable with our $1000 system, even though it's meant to be one of our strong selling points. Lets also pimp a title that's just like any other average racing sim. Yawwwwn @ PS3

I still wouldn't be happy, unless they gave away a free ps3 on top of the HD TV and a limo ride home.

Everyone will have one eventually;)

Did you somehow miss all that hype about f***loads of people lining up everywhere in the US, just to re-sell their PS3 on eBay for profits? Did you miss the news reports of multiple physical fights / muggings taking place at PS3 launch nights, due to the demand?

Note, people didn't actually want to OWN the PS3, they wanted to make profits by selling them on eBay due to the shortage.

So um, where the f*** did you come up with the "only 3 in the US when it launched" theory?

This was the PS2 launch event in France:

This was the 'event' in Paris just now:

I just come back from the french PS3 event at Paris - La Tour Eiffel. It was the worst launch ever seen before. Just 20 people in the line were waiting to buy the PS3.... I will post the screens in few mins.

http://www.jeux-france.com/Webmasters/Images/10editeurs20070323_012703_13_big.jpg

Microsoft also did their part by setting up the appropriate anti advertising. LOL!

From the JeuxFrance "article":

* The official PS3 special event bombed: Sony put a boat in front of the Eiffel tower with 1000 PS3's on it, a few dozen persons showed up, not including the Xbox360 boat you can see below

Then obviously it's not for you then is it? There are some people who have 7' projector screens with 8.1 surround sound in their homes who would benefit from larger resolution movies. Just like you wouldn't buy a big mack truck just to drive to work in, you'd buy a car, but someone who hauls s*** for a living would make good use of a truck.

Simple.

^ yeh but he is in the majority... Only the minority have the uber projector screens and the big wang plasma HDTV bling.
To the Mr Joe Average, 'poo-ray' is a rather useless feature.

hmm will poo-ray end up being beta or vhs?

the only thing I took out of that extremely long winded post is that you don't understand that owning a PC and a console are not mutually exclusive and that it's about the games and not the hardware.

Why on earth did you bring up the issue of "PC vs Console issue" issue anyway?

Haha, I just read this, go Microsoft:

In England, at Sony's Virgin Megastore launch where people were invited to camp out, those who were standing up were offered a chair. The catch being that the fold-out chairs had text on them which, when folded out, read, "Shouldn't have kept you waiting", along with a URL: www.shkyw.org. Cheeky.

Microsoft also sent one group of UK journalists 168 cans of Fosters beer, with a note stating that there are better ways to spend £146, the difference in price between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

For the price of a playstation 3 you could get a decent PC and do more stuff than just game.
If you're buying a console purely for something other than gaming, you're missing the main point of buying a console.

Really? Someone better tell the retailers and Sony this fact:

Heh I was in Harvey's on the weekend. They have a PS3 set up, and a PS2 set up with Guitar Hero 2. I watched for a while to see what people did, and everyone just went and watched people playing Guitar Hero - it had a crowd around it the whole time. The PS3 had people drift in, pick up the controller and play a bit of Motorstorm, and then walk away - seemingly incredibly underwhelmed.

Sad that there's still nothing they can put up there that makes people go "whoa". From what I've seen (and this is EXACTLY how I felt at E3 last year), there's just nothing on there that makes me want one.

I don't think much of consoles but I thought a video of LittleBigPlanet looked alright (graphics/physics-wise that is):

LittleBigPlanet isn't out until Q2 2008, and I doubt many people would buy a PS3 now based on a video of a game they won't play for another year.

Talking of which the Dreamcast actually had some pretty decent arcade games like Soul Calibur, House of the Dead, Dead or Alive, Street Fighter 3rd Strike...

Someone please remind me what made it go flop all of the sudden??

The rampant piracy also would have hurt the Dreamcast. You could eventually load pirated games without any physical modifications at all, all you needed was a loader disc or a loader burnt onto the dreamcast CD.
