Yet another story, this one from The Australian, about violent games:
VIOLENT computer games can trigger a mechanism in the brain that makes people more likely to behave aggressively.

A study of the effects of popular games such as Doom, Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto, which involve brutal killings, high-powered weaponry and street crime, indicates that avid users become desensitised to shocking acts of aggression.

And sleeping pills may cause drowsiness. What a crappy article stating yet again the bleeding obvious. just to give games a bad name. again.

We don't need more people inspired to be like Jack Thompson. Tho he is at the extreme end and sometimes delusional.

Well, I agree that playing Counterstrike etc can make you very agro. That usually happens when someone shoots you through the head from behind a wall or something though.

Lets say that 'yeh, violent games do make ppl more violent.'

So what?

Alcohol, driving, contact sports, night clubs, violent literature, violent films, violent music ... better ban them too.

better to be angry with the game than angry at friends/family, etc.

In subjects with the most experience of violent games, the P300 response to the violent images was smaller, and delayed. "People who play a lot of violent video games didn't see them as much different from neutral (images)," Dr Bartholow said.

Oh noes! Does that mean that us violent gamers can judge violent images/scenes with a more calm, collected and hence more reasonable attitude?
Ban the games I say! I want hysterical mobs!

Also, Thompson may be ditching his rightous cause (lol) and going after the bar assiciation now. I have a feeling it may not have as much impact :P

People that play ra3 need lots of things, each year once they make it out of kindergarten I hope they'll wise up, but it never seems to happen

Just another biased report/study. I started reading the full paper and it was obvious VERY quickly how flawed and attributable to other elements their "findings" are.
I give a week before this is publically discredited in a major psychology journal.

ooooo wait wait. let me guess how they conducted this study... they got a bunch of 7 - 10yr olds, gave them this MA15+ rated games and then watched how kids reacted to the games after they were turned off.

if your to lazy to check what a big 3 inch rectangle on the game box that shows the rating and what it contains, then your a bit to f***in lazy to be a parent. "hmmm whats this game? ultimate mega bloodbath skull-f*** killer super rape man. WOW what a perfect game for my 9yr old" -> 7 years later... "omg why did billy kill 27 people in school? ITS THE GAMES!"

I sure wish they made me angry ... all they do is make me sad at how mundane normal life is :/.
Waking up in the morning to go slaughter monsters for gold and the fancy of the village women would be awesome!

There's your cause - anyone playing on a P300 is gonna get frustrated and violent. Probably an i440BX motherboard. You're lucky if you can find 4xAGP in those things, not to mention the HDD interface is gonna be ATA33. ;-)

They should do a study into whether invading foreign countries makes people more violent.

heh

I dont normally watch morning current affairs television (theyre all arselickers as far as I am concerned) I saw the headline 'VIOLENT COMPUTER GAMES DEBATE' and saw they had some wanker on there talking about it.

Blessedly I had the mute button on but had to laugh when they started showing screenies of WOW and at the bottom it said:

'World of Work Raft'
Publisher: Blizzard
Rating:None

lol
anyone else see that? deads***s

haha! Shame I didn't see it. But that proves the point they hardly look at the games they condemn.

Wankers. They should go on my realm so I can gank the f*** out of them.

Haven't you heard of World of Work Raft? It's a Blizzard classic! It's way better than Ferry Wars Online, or even Pontoon Tycoon.

my partner has played violent computer games since he was a wee thing and he wouldn't hurt a fly.

A lot of it has to be put down to the moral's their parents inflict on them

"VIOLENT computer games can trigger a mechanism in the brain that makes people more likely to behave aggressively."

and this is supposedly proven by the fact that violent games desensitise player's reaction to violent images... this makes them more violent how? just because i can watch blackhawk down and not puke at the sight of a guy with his bottom half blown off and his intestines splayed about on the ground where his legs should be, suddenly i'm gonna randomly start to 'behave agressively'? what's a passive reaction got to do with agressiveness, which is an active kind of behaviour? this s***'s ridiculous, yo.

btw how do you quote on these foz0rums?

show a farmer a picture of a dead animal and im sure they are going to start crying. but if you show a teenage girl who plays halo a picture of a wild pig stuck in an electric fence. and they are going to be screeming "RIGHT ON!"

there tests. "dead animals and sick children". WHO HASN'T SEEN A DEAD ANIMAL OR A SICK CHILD BEFORE!?

with the title of the article "Violent games make users more aggressive" I don't see anywhere in the article where they attempt to back up this claim, all they say is that some gamers are more desensitized to violent images, not that they're more prone to perform them.

This is my favourite bit:

Many studies have concluded that people who play violent games are more aggressive, more likely to commit violent crimes and less likely to help others.

The mind boggles.
