Sony have launched the new Playstation 2 site for Australia. Looks like you can pre-order from there as well. Go check it out before this new console hits and breaks some Dreamcast legs (hehe).

So why is it twice the price?

I would have said "extremely clever marketing by Sony" - if they can sell a few units at this inflated price, good on em for making a product that people think is good enough to get shafted on the price by. I'm sure it will come down sooner or later. I'm not planning on spending $700 on one, that's for sure, but when it drops, I'll be lining up with my jar of pennies.

A friend of mine has played one, (all in Japanese though.. he was in Japan), and he said he though it was s***.

Heaps of people are buying em cause they are good dvd players. I already have a dvd player, guess that means im not buying a ps2!

How can you honestly say "good on em" when talking about a company that is selling a product at a price which, by your own admission, is too high, in an attempt to screw every last dollar out of uninformed plebs who've been taken for a ride by the hype?

Personally I got nothing against the ps2, I'm sure it'll do some pretty impressive things down the line and I too will be lining up to get one when the price drops, but I got no respect for Sony and their "marketing" of it. The system is hideously overpriced for what it is and people who have been blasted about the head with massive amounts of Sony hype are willing to pay it because they're led to believe its the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Well then those people are stupid, its obvious there is only one second coming of Jesus Christ and thats John Carmack, right trog?

Its only hideously overpriced in .au - like a lot of things when they first come out.

The market over here is basically dick-all, remember, I'm suprised they care enough about us to send us anything.

Although it's pretty standard price for new consoles, I'd still call $299 US "hideously overpriced", especially when dreamcasts in the USA are going for $149 and offering a $50 rebate...

PS2's would have to be around $300 AUS and offer some quality games before I'd consider buying one, the dreamcast is just such a better option atm on several fronts..
