Hot on the heels of the demonstration of the GeForce 3 ubercard at MacWorld is the press release from nVidia. Here's a snippet:

  • The first fully programmable GPU-the nfiniteFX(tm) Pixel Shader processor
and Vertex Shader processor give developers the ability to program a
virtually infinite number of special effects and custom looks.

  • The first high-resolution antialiasing (HRAA) GPU, featuring NVIDIA's
patented Quincunx AA mode, for high-resolution, high-quality,
    high-performance multisampling capabilities.

  • A platform for advanced transform and lighting features, enabling more
complex, visually exciting objects and scenes.

  • OpenGL® 1.2 compatible.

  • Available in 64MB DDR SDRAM configuration that supports both the
innovative Apple® Display Connector and the industry standard VGA
    connection.

As they announced at MacWorld, the GeForce 3 will be available first on the Mac, a move which I'm sure has Mac lovers giggling about their superiority again (the last time they would have been doing that is when Q3test came out on that platform before the PC platform).

mac's are far superior to the pc's... although not for us gamers at the moment, reading this i see that mac are starting to get into the gaming market a bit more... a geforce 3 with a dual g4 would s*** over any pc you could think of... believe me i know!

not to mention mac OS X is coming out soon and has some good features for gaming... as soon as some games like counter strike are on the macs i think the general view on macs will change dramatically

but for now... lets leave the macs for professional use and making the special effects in films like the matrix and gladiator and all the rest...

Munkey - qualify a little please. "mac's are far superior to the pc's" is a little too general to wash - no statment that general can be correct.

Of course, I'm not going to actually bother responding to that blatant troll.

You weren't actually serious, right?

Malth.

wow...counterstrike on a dual g4 with a geforce 3

wouldnt that be *great* !!
considering it wont really be able to take advantage of it...also the fact that the fkn hl engine was designed for a pII 233 with a voodoo2

if you meant to say quake3 or doom3 or something instead of counterstrike then it is ok :)

Macs are better than PCs ... yes, yes, that would be why they are development OS INTEL/comp chip sets.

After working in support for Macs and PCs (one was a mac only place), I wouldnt rate Macs as anything overly special.

One of the biggest problems of Macs is the lack of "sprockets" (Mac version of DX). Apple was going to include this in its OS-X development, but stalled on it, then went around saying they are going to give that power to developers.

Basicly adding months to the design cycle.

It is hard to value a Mac over a PC, seeing that you can hardly find anything in shops that are sold for macs, at least in Australia.

Here's what Mr. JC has to say about the G4 cpu:

i remember the carmack saying how lame mac os was for development (when he was porting quake 3) due to the lack of memory management

now admittedly that may have been changed in max os x but the fact of the matter is that any computer with a non-cream case is bound to be crap

"The GeForce3 GPU achieves an astounding 3.2 billion antialiased samples per second fill rate--more than four times the performance of the award-winning GeForce2 Ultra ..."

Jesus 4 times the grunt of an ULTRA ??? watch the price start free-falling now...I hope it does anyway

I know it's bait, but it's been so long since I've had a good anti-mac rant...

but for now... lets leave the macs for professional use

You're right...you should leave stuff like basic memory management and true preemptive multitasking for the kids - professionals need their apps to steal each others memory and crash. And professionals should be focused on doing one task at a time! if macs had preemptive multitasking, then you'd be able to do more than one thing at once! for shame!

Oh and RISC! What a wave of the future! I sure wish my processor could do 100 small operations instead of the 10 big ones mine does now to do the same thing but faster! And who needs processors faster than 733mhz! certainly not professionals!

Plus, everyone knows that a single button squeezable hockey puck is the only way to play games. Why on *earth* would you need to have more than one button!

and making the special effects in films like the matrix and gladiator and all the rest...

Hmm, someone better tell Dell and Manex that they didn't use PC's for the Matrix. And I guess Mill Film must have travelled forwards in time to do the FX for gladiator, since neither SoftImage or Maya have been *released* for the Mac yet, let alone back when they did the Gladiator fx.

That's the trouble with mac zealots, always forgetting to look into things. Must be the berets blocking their eyes....

It's John Carmack's opinion that the PC is still superior to a mac with OS X with a gf3... And I think he has more experience with it than the maccists in this here forum.
His view.

on shugashack it says that the mac won't get the gf3 first though

its supposed to be simultanious on mac and pc

its the same card, whether you put it in a mac or not, they both have PCI slots

how the hell could it not be a simultaenous release?

the drivers that come in the box will be for both os's and then there's reference ones that will support it anyway.

b2 was saying that you can have a mac card that won't work in a PC, but the PCI version (for PC) will work in either. I think that was what they're saying about it (shrug, ask b2)

heh, then I guess it just depends on how much money apple paid them.

that really sounds stupid tho, what is in it for companies like asus and hercules to make a card that only works in a mac if they can make one that works in both.
AGP even, not PCI :P
