The guys that started the whole CTF thing, Threewave, have merged with other large CTF mod authors, CCTF (Classic CTF) to reinject life back into the Q3 CTF community.

This new project will see over 40 maps being released free of charge to everyone, so that there is more map options within ctf for quake3:

What is the ThreeWave/CCTF Unification project? In the next few months, we (ThreeWave and Classic CTF) are hoping to revive hardcore multiplayer gaming by providing between thirty and forty maps to the general public at no cost. Our core goal is to get these maps in the hands of as many people as possible by making them easily available from ThreeWave.com, and played by as many people as possible, and reviving the online Quake3 multiplaying community! Below are just a few screenshots from some of the upcoming maps that are currently in the making or beta stages. We hope you enjoy them and will have patience as we try to make this project the best we can, everyone knows the ThreeWave name and also how 'Quality' is linked hand in hand with their name, and in the past we have always loved and enjoyed anything the ThreeWave team has come up with and this upcoming project is no different! Along with Classic CTF support and the whole Q3 CTF gaming community behind it this should be one of the major projects in Quake3 gaming this year!

Bang! There's their problem. 40 maps. You want to put life back in to a mod, release a few quality maps which will become the mainstay and allow teams to build strategies. You can't build a solid map based strategy when you are dealing with 40 maps. It'll always be 'we will defend, you three attack'. A massive amount of choice isn't always a good thing.

Yeah I wouldn't call it a revival either .. it's merely a group of people who are going to continue playing Quake2 CTF, just like there are groups of ppl who still play Quake.

Yeh well, there's more players on Q2CTF than Team Arena atm...

It seems there is just 'too much' out there. You've got Q3CTF (with new maps coming), then youve got Team Arena CTF (more new maps coming), and then Alliance CTF, Classic CTF and Threewave CTF.

Most are meant for hardcore players, but half of them dont have local servers, are a huge download, with simply not enough people around to play them all. It seems CS and games like DoD are creating more interest for players, probably due to them being 'easier' to play etc.

I look at Ausgamers servers through SQ, and all of them are empty except CS, Tribes, and a few on RA3. CTF empty, TA empty.

Are the Quake players disapearing, are they sick of the game, or are they simply just 'waiting for something better'?

if this 3wave merger thing means a new ctf standard that brings back the grapple, then it could go places.

otherwise, its just gonna be another unplayed mod.

"sif q2ctf has been revived
just a few people who want to give it a go again"

That's like saying your brain's not dead it just isn't alive. The former rules out the latter.
