(note: ta to steve for the link if he is reading this)
Love Hina would have to be my favorite anime series of all time. So when I heard it was coming to DVD in the west, I was happy. Unfortunately, its dubbed. Also unfortunately, its THE WORST DUB EVAR. And it has some big names to live up to. Appleseed's dub was atrocious. Ninja Scroll's was laughable. But that is nothing. This site has samples of all the different character voices.
Lets start with the fact that they DONT EVEN f***ING PRONOUNCE THE NAMES RIGHT!! How hard is it to listen to the original japanese names and say it the same way? For gods sake! Keitaro's dub? Im not even going to go there. It is incredibly bad. Sure, he is supposed to be a bit of a loser, but that is taking to way too far.
Naru sounds like a total bitch. Sure she may be a bit violent, but the voice in the japanese version was spot on. Kitsune has a f***ing southern us accent. SHE IS f***ING JAPANESE YOU MORONS!
Kaolla has an idiotic cliched indian accent, even though she says on multiple occasions that she is not indian. I guess the others are sort of okay, but they are still s***house compared to the originals.
Some of you may think im getting a bit anal about this. But I thought the voices in the original japanese version suited the characters from the manga absolutely perfectly! Then someone comes along and completely ruins it, and that gives me the s***s. I really dont see why they need to dub them in the first place. Oh well.

Haha, dubs were always gay. Sure some were better than others but subs are the way to go! :P

Exactly. Thats why im not going to buy the DVDs. Im still pissed off that they are ruining my favorite anime series of all time, but I guess I shouldnt worry, as ill always have my fansubs. I still cant beleive they made Keitaro sound like the teenage with the breaking voice off the Simpsons. Jesus.

Did you really expect better from American dubbers? Princess Mononoke is about the only competent dub ive ever heard come out of the states. Of course, im a try-hard purist about dubbing. I wont even listen to the dubbing in NGE, coz it just makes me want to pound nails through my dick.
But I thought the voices in the original japanese version suited the characters from the manga absolutely perfectly!

But Americans are too stupid/illiterate/lazy to read subs, and their "voice actors" dont seem to be able to comprehend the fact that animes are not marketed to 8 year olds, so they always do a s***house job. Thats life, you've learned your lesson, dont ever buy anything out of the US again.

/end two cents.

The "Ruroni Kenshin" Dub was the worst I've seen, On rare occasions dubs are good enough to be worth watching eg "El Hazzard" and "Gun Smith Cats". "Gun Smith Cats" has the very funny line "his mom dresses him funny line" in the dub which isn't present in the sub. Oh and the "Run Lola Run" dub is f***ing awful too.

I didnt buy the DVDs. I dont know why you are telling me not to buy stuff from the US! Ill stick with the fansubs. As for the 3rd episode, should be out mid next month judging by the speed of the previous releases. Ill ICQ it when I see it around. BTW, ive heard there are only going to be 3 episodes of the OAV series, but I dont see how they can wrap up the plot from the manga in that time. Can anyone confirm how many eps there are?

Even if the Love Hina had a good english Dub, I still wouldnt listen to it so it makes no difference to me. The US dvds still contain the japanese track.

Oh, BTW CAM, The Cowboy Bebop Dubs are OK

Speaking of Bebop, word is that Madman is trying to get the release rights to the series.
Sorry if this is old news, but I only found out today.

Speaking of Bebop, I just recently aquired the R1 Perfect Sessions Boxset :) Number 2,987 of 10,000

Let it be known that R1 dvds make madman releases look like bootlegs.

Thants OK. Just one thing about the Love Hina Dubs however. Bandai (Who released the R1, aswell as Bebop), were not responsible for the poor dub. It was actually the japan company that was responsible for the dubs.

awww man he is right.

Lain dub does suck.
I have both Lain sub and dub.

For some reason I just decided to watch it now.

ROFL at the names.
For some reason Arisu is now Alice in the dub.
And Lain's dub voice is too happy at times when she is meant to be sad or whatever it is. Maybe it's just how the Jap speak......
And the sound quality in my dubs sucks compared to subs :(

well since the japanese language doesnt have "L" and a few other english letters, arisu sounds like a japanaese phonetically translation of "alice" actualy. similar to how the anime "FLCL" actual name is "fooly cooly" but its writen as "furi kuri"

NGE - Cause the voices were rats*** and it was such a good series that it was a shame that it was ruined by s*** dubbing. Shinji had a bad dubb what a voice... :)

Ta for that StreX. I didnt think the eva dub was so bad, as far as dubs go. Shinji was crap, but misato was okay, asuka wasnt too bad, gendo ikari was good, fuyustski (spelling?) was good. Rei was great, but nowhere near as good as the uber-talented Megumi Hayashibara's version. Ive been downloding some of her music lately too, great stuff. About the LH DVDs, apparently at least one scene has been cut out (the bit in the first episode when Kei and Naru were running around the baths, im sure you remember it :). Also, the dialogue has been changed to be less sexual in nature, which is pretty much what the whole show is about. Goddamnit, I still cant get those f***ing ridiculous Keitaro and Mitsune dubs out of my head. I shudder to think what they are going to do to mutsumi's voice...hers was perfect :(

I got one thing to add here....the dubs on loads of anime series suck, especially LH..not suprising, altough some turn out good...but your complaining about the dubs on the dvd's so why the hell don't you just watch them with Japanese language tracks+ENG subs?? oh well I guess it IS a thread about dub-smiting...

im sick of hearing people complain about the dub not being like the sub maybe thats because ENGLISH ISNT JAPANESE.

gits

Translation problems are nto an excuse to change the basic content of a show. I was complaining because the LH dub has dialogue changed for the sole reason of making it less sexual, and thus have a lower rating. And thats just wrong.

Its the way of all anime dubs, stick with the original japanese dialogue and you usually wont be dissapointed.

I dunno if any of you have realised or not, but all dubs, be it movie, animation or whatever, generally suck. Its a very difficult job to get it "perfect" (very subjective might I add) so I wouldn't expect them to be "perfect". What really, really, pisses me off though, is American ads that have been dubbed with Australian voices. Subtle dubbing isn't THAT bad but when it's as blatant as most ads are, I would agree. For instance, look at the latest Subway ad - JESUS CHRIST I WANT TO PUNCH THE TV. Meh I think its time I went to bed.

Hehe.. Love Hina is also one of my favourites. I've ordered the comic (Chinese version) online about a month ago and so hopefully it'll be here in a few weeks time. And I just managed to complete the entire set of the English version of the manga last night... so I am happy.

Don't know about the anime though... I've read something about the anime wasn't as popular as the manga and something about how the anime storyline probably will never finish so you'll have to go to the comic to get the entire storyline.

Anyway, there are these two other manga called "Touch!" and "H2" by Adatsu (same author). I haven't seen the English translated version of the manga, but if you come across it, you should check it out. Bastard! is another good comic, but totally does not make sense if you have XX chromosomes or if you don't play any AD&D or other similar RPGs. :D

What I meant by "same author" was that "Touch!" and "H2" were by the same author, who is NOT the author of Love Hina.

Just thought I might clear that up.

I'd have to say the worst dubbed anime movie is AKIRA - Great movie but the dubbing is so ghey! People in Neo-Tokyo walking around with thick New York accents phooking stoopid!

Hey has anyone seen "A Perfect Blue"
I've been hearing alot about this movie but is it any good? Also does anyone know whether Princess Monoke is out on video yet??

Yeah i got this too but its a very dissapointing transfer. It Claims to be a dual layer disc, but guess whats on the 2nd layer ? - not the movie, just previews and s***.

Transfer suffers from a poor ntsc-pal conversion also making fast scene changes and movements apprear ghosted. Terrible aliasing too.

Would the LH DVD have the japanese track as well? If not, that would suck completely.
