by Rodolphe. Stolen from the forums.
Japanese company Optware will commercialize an optical disc that can store more than 1 terabyte of data, and an associated disc player, later this year, the company said earlier this week.

The disc and player are based on a 5-inch optical disc like existing CDs and DVDs, but the new disc will be able to store about 120 DVD-format movies, according to Atsushi Machida, a spokesman for Optware.

The high capacity--around 20 times the storage available on existing discs--and a data transfer speed of 1 gigabit per second have been achieved by using digital volume holography read/write technology, developed under the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) in the United States, according to Optware's statement

heh, it still amazes me that ppl say this latest tech is useless etc. cdroms were HUGE when they first came out, remember games use to still fit on floppies... of course a TB is big now, but itll be obselete one day. dvds were huge before, but yew cant even store a worth whiled amount of HDTV on one. so theres a use for a TB disc right there. i say the fastest tech goes forward the better, then we can play catch up instead of being slowed down :)

first it started with that stupid magnetic fl00py disk .. and then the news came out that u can fit 600 floppy disK on 1 CD and then 4-8 CD's on a DVD and now (how many DVD's on this OPtical?!? ) ... hmmmm... i aint complaining more pr0n baby!

would be awesome if it took off but i see alot of technologies like this die in the ass. then there are patents etc and i think the company would haveto suck some major corprate head for companies like sony n stuff to manufactur it

still, would be f***en a if it takes off
