The first 3G wireless network in the Southern Hemisphere goes live this week in Adelaide, but only temporarily. Adelaide is playing host to the World Congress of Information Technology 2002, and this Thursday delegates will get to see two SONY notebooks streaming video and other stuff at one another over the 3G CDMA network m.Net (Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq and Motorola) have setup around parts of the city of Adelaide. How far off is 3G wireless for the average Australian user? Judging by the brief description in that article on the plans of companies with a stake in 3G technology in Australia, I'd say it's a long way off. If you are interested in m.Net, there's more on it here. A third of m.Net's 30 million in funding came from the Australian Government. |

I Remember reading on Sun MS that the industry will be skipping 3G due to the financial problems it will have due to incompatiblities. They will be concentrating on 4G technologies which are much cheaper, fully compatible and are more robust. There will only be the odd test of the 3G backbone, which will still be used in 4G technology. The estimate was still between 10-15 years before we all have 2 megabit wireless connections, which are cheap. That means about 20-25 years for Australia - lol :) |
