Haven't done one of these in ages, with intel releasing a new socket I decided that it was finally time to put my old i7-7700 onto special projects.

Items marked with a * are existing parts from my current box. The CPU is already ordered.

Stuff that's on the inside
--------------------------------
CPU: Intel Core i9-10900K 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Floe Riing RGB 280 TT Premium Edition 63.19 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z490-P ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
* Storage: Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
* Video Card: Zotac GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB GAMING AMP Video Card
* Power Supply: Corsair HX Platinum 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Display
----------
* 1x Samsung C49HG90DME 49inch Super Ultra Wide Curved QLED Monitor (3840x1080 widescreen gaming and watching stuff)
* 2x Acer Predator XB1 XB241YU 23.8inch 144hz G-Sync Gaming Monitor

I use the computer for compute and gfx heavy (Unity, Blender, Visual Studio etc) workflows so need/want lots of grunt. Also dota and Destiny2 and Elite: Dangerous and Minecraft. Missus watches movies on it too.

lol yeh its large-ish, picked up an Omnidesk Pro (183x76cm) last year and it worked out ok

Will be putting the Acers (maybe all of them) onto the wall somehow though once we get the plastering finished

Bit of a beastly build. Are you looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077 on it?

Any reason you've gone with Intel over AMD?

Yeah but also a generation ahead. AMD's new offerings may be out in a few months. Same with NVIDIA's new cards. From the benchmarks I've seen AMD just kill Intel in workstation tasks while only being slightly beaten in gaming performance.

Splitting hairs though, that build is a beast and will demolish anything thrown at it. If the Ampere ti card is as powerful as rumoured I may get one and upgrade my 3600X to the 8 core next gen AMD CPU for parity with the next gen of consoles in core count. Mainly just for Cyberpunk to run completely free at as close to 140fps as possible.

I've also always seemingly had back luck when I roll AMD gear.

Aside from the timing (the money is allocated now and the 10th gen blue stuff just dropped) I reckon I'm 60/40 biased towards intel/nvidia by default.

That game is going to push a whole generation of upgrades

Ahh okay so was I after a long period of Intel dominance but the Zen 2 CPUs are pretty special. Worth having a good luck at if you haven't. Intel's security flaws really put me off them in a big way.

That said I reeally appreciate that AMD is bringing it in meaningful ways.

Have wanted broader CPUs (more cores) for ages.

Can this rig run 4K games at reasonable FPS? I guess that is what I am looking for for my next big upgrade. I have been running my "work" laptop as my gaming PC for a couple of months; it's fine but doesn't have the power of a desktop and it's just f***ing annoying

Just bought my third USB hub of the year - first one from Umart simply didn't work, 2nd one was an emergency expensive purchase because I needed something quickly and didn't have enough ports, so now I've got two donglely dongles dongling out of my laptop, which I hope to never have to move again which of course defeats the point of having one in the first place. Shoulda just bought the stupid overpriced dock thing.

edit: also I saw Linus Tovalds recently switched to AMD so a lot of nerds are obviously getting back onboard the AMD train!

My rig is almost identical except it's AMD and I can run games on ultrawide which is somewhere between 1440p and 4k with settings on stupid high so yeah it should be able to push out 4k easily. GPU is where it counts. Also depends heavily on the game you're playing of course. 4k DOTA2 and 4k RDR2 are obviously very different.

One thing I just noticed - the Samsung is a VA panel. Have you had a VA panel before? If yes, ignore what I'm about to say because you already know.

I love my VA panel, but it's a joke for desktop use. Real ugly glowing on the mouse cursor. Real ugly glowing around everything really. Personally I can live with that because when HDR is on it is unmatched apart from a native OLED. I have an IPS monitor as my secondary and when they're both displaying black the difference is huge. I had quick look through the specs but couldn't see whether it had local dimming zones. One thing that always annoyed me with monitors was LED bleed in the corners which they do away with.

Also be prepared for a lot of f***ery getting some games to work in ultrawide mode. I'm running standard 21:9 and some games require you to download an exe from PCGW or WSGF to run properly. Whenever I download and run my virus scanners s*** themselves which always makes me nervous, despite being aware that cheatengine (which most ultrawide fixers use, apparently) really gets their attention. What I'm afraid of is a malicious person uploading malware and me ignoring the warnings because I think it's a false positive.

I really recommend using whatever GPU you have now and waiting a little bit for the 3080ti. The 2080ti is kind of disappointing considering the price. the 3080ti is rumoured to be an utter beast.
