How good are games when we're surprised by them? Like, it's easy to know what we'll expect from Battlefield, World of Warcraft, Forza, Uncharted or even Pokemon and upcomers like Cyberpunk 2077. But when games surprise us, it's something special. What's even greater though, is when you know nothing of that game at all.

We used Triple-A titles just now as a point of reference, because there's a good chance you've never heard of Disco Elysium, let alone played it, and we were in the same boat, but such is a problem living locked to Australia's still-very-poor distribution system. But here we are, with this game at Number Three in our Top 10 Best Games of 2020 list. Here's some thoughts...
Disco Elysium is also one of the purest RPGs of 2019 in how its intricate and original collection of skills and attributes inform just about every interaction, major choice, or potential confrontation via dice roll. Choice and freedom in character development and progressing a story is often something championed, and on that front Disco Elysium is resounding success - where everything you say, even if it’s sarcastic seems to matter...
