Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGLTgt0EEqc

Comes across as sort of a Borderlands / Fallout kind of hybrid. I'm sure people who are more switched on than I am are already aware of it but I just saw the trailer on reddit. Haven't seen a trailer this good in ages.

Looks like a goer?

I got a bit of a Bioshock vibe too, with the genetic manipulation type stuff going on, and how everything is commercialised and "better than nature".

Looks very cool

other than crash team racing, this was the best looking game revealed at the game awards.

Ha! Have Obsidian just given Bethesda the finger by making a 'Starfield' type RPG well before Todd! Man are they going to be pissed. The Unreal 4 engine certainly looks a lot better than the poor old Creation engine.

A pretty good general chat about the game and some of its mechanics between some https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58qKmxO_YfQ

I want to believe it will be good but considering 2010 was the last time I enjoyed an Obsidian game I'm not holding my breath. It seems they lost a lot of their magic after New Vegas was done.

Yep fair point, but...last month my youngest 'gamer' son (19) whom I chat to a lot about game stuff, came up to be am informed me that Microsoft had just purchased Obsidian. I said, "What did you say?' He repeated it and I got all excited and when he asked why, I said, "well mate when someone in Microsoft decides to buy a dev or secure them and their ip (Minecraft 2.5$Bill) its generally a pretty good sign i.e. when Bungie were a fledgling dev and the Big M.S. could see a gold mine in their title, Halo was huge.

Hmm he replied, 'I wonder what Obsidian might be up to?'...'So do I' I said...'but it must be pretty bloody awesome to attract the backing and bucks of MS xbox internal.

Two weeks later the Outer Worlds stuff started to drop and I got a boner. Even more so when I see that two original devs on Fallout were intimately involved. :)

Well they haven't made a first person game since then so hopefully this will be more your flavour.

It's not the shift back to CRPGs that has left me cold on them lately, it's the dull and uninspired settings of their games. Pillars of Eternity in particular was just so drab and generic (and buggy, as is their tradition) that I quit at about two thirds through it.

I actually really liked the setting and story of Pillars, it was the gameplay that ended up turning me off in the end

You may find Deadfire an improvement. Gone are those large transitional areas between hubs that you have to slog through. There's plenty of cool islands to explore which are neatly tied into the narrative which provide you with unique items.

This will be an Epic Store exclusive which is apparently a bad thing because it has lots of spyware but I don't care I'll be buying it day one anyway. Then I'll re buy it on Steam in a year.
