I've just moved into a new place only a few km from the Brisbane CBD in a fairly high density area, so of course the NBN isn't available yet because why would it be

I'm using my old Internode modem - a Billion 7401VGPR3 - that I got probably 7-8 years ago. It seems to randomly crash or lock up - I lose Internet connection and I can't even access the admin panel for the modem, even though the lights are still on, and I need to reboot to restore access.

It's been in a box unused for the last four years while I've been overseas and honestly I'm amazed that it still works at all.

My new provider sells modems that are fairly cheap but I'd really like to get something that I can customise a bit - preferably something that is more customisable out of the box. The main feature I want above the bog-standard stuff is the ability to have IP accounting (i.e., track network data usage) on a per-device basis. I know I can do this with DD-WRT or whatever but I'd prefer not to have to reinstall the thing if I can avoid it so hoping there might be a more modern modem that people know already does this.

Suggestions/feedback appreciated!!

im using tplink gear atm, its cheap, has loads of different models and you can run DD-WRT if you want, but i prefer them stock, so many options.

if you want VoIP i would recommend the Fritzbox 7490. Very easy to setup and quite powerful. But just find a router that does DSL and also can use LAN1 as WAN port.

Yeh don't need voice; happy to use my PC or phone for calls. I looked at it but it doesn't have SNMP so ruled it out on that basis.

yeh I started having a look at them but they have like 102390190 models at Umart and I got bored quickly - was doing lazyweb to see if someone had already figured out what does per-device IP accounting to save time

Mate its insane...only had the right eye done on 4/4 and the left on Tuesday 7/4, but they are both reading at 20/30. As they heal my vision will be better and better as the outter shell of the eye shrinkwraps down onto the lens. The surgeon said my vision will be better that what it was when I was 20yrs old in about three weeks.

I cant describe how much games look COMPLETELY different to me now. The graphics are so much sharper, richer, finer defined edges and lines..and my colour acuity has gone thru the roof. The surgeon explained that although they were inserting vision correction my lenses are a bit more special in that they also correct astigmatisms I had in both eyes and my RGB spectrum would be 'impressive'. He wasn't wrong!! Holy s*** Batman.

I turned on the gas stove the other night and s*** myself when I saw the actual colour of gas! Its always been a dark teal green colour to me..bit WOW...now its this amazing LED electric Blue. I've been turning the stove on and just staring at the gas for minutes at a time. Truly remarkable technology. Its like switching your monitor from a slightly drab 'warm' graphical setting and then switching it to a pin sharp, bright, vivid 'cool' setting...that's hw much my world has changed. One small side effect is that lights at night all look like god rays for now and are quite spectacular, but apparently the brain adjust and eventually in time this 'light show' will die down a lot.

Plus now I ca see mother f***ers a lot better in PUBG, although it seems the devs are intent on destroying that title! :

SEE YOU on the battle field. muahahahah

*Trog if you want the Billion 7800n dude just PM and we can sort collection delivery...I'm off to Hawaii (its going to look even more gorgeous than it did in 2013 I'd say!) in three weeks, so if you don't get back to me I'll be away till about May 15th.

Awesome dude thanks. I've actually just picked up a cheap one from somewhere else while I do more research (the crashes seem to have picked up frequency and it's interrupting my work and, more importantly, my Dota) so I didn't want to wait - so I'll pass on it for but will check it out.

Have a great time in Hawaii dude! It is a cool place. My partner is trying to get me to head back for a visit towards the end of the year to visit friends but I'm trying to avoid the US for another couple years.

(Out of interest, who was the doc who did your new eyeballs, if you don't mind sharing?)

Yes Hawaii is a great place been there a few times but this ones special, without going any bloody kids and we've not been to Mauii before so its all good. Although I'm picking up 3 Samsung Odyssey headsets In Honolulu as pressies for the buggers (one for me too of course, they are on special at the moment and from all accounts easily match toe forthcoming Vive pro..so I cant resist)) We also have a 450hp Mustang Convertible booked for 4 days on Mauii....going to be getting round real fast!

Eyes were done by Dr Lee Lenton at the Vision Eye centre at Rivercity Private hospital, Auchenflour.

HAHA NO SORRY.. HEHE I watched people doing it in 2013...wow. I may have had a s***load of high tech gear installed over the years, hell I have more titanium in me than the space shuttle in my spine & neck, new eyes, shiny new ceramic teeth..MASSIVE COCK IMPLANT...(joking) :)

But alas I haven't got the bionic legs for that event, yet. You know its actually illegal to go up there now, they have guards who are posted each day to stop people doing it, BUT everyone just gets up early and gets there before the guard starts work... so he just sits there and tells them they are naughty when they come down.

There is a brilliant snorkeling cove just near there...that's more our speed...me and the missus are a couple of old farts remember. :)

Welcome back.

a lot has changed while you were away.

Aussies have gotten wise to the copper vs fiber NBN situation.

A new business op jumped up in the background with the number of Aussies who are willing to pay the costs to avoid copper NBN - do you have any info on this Trog?

btw... i would like some help re-enabling my old account.

trog if you want to do ip accounting (via snmp) you're better off getting a small, low power computer. it'll be more fun to build anyway and you can add all the controls you need to it, and plug one of these into it DrayTek VigorNIC xDSL with SFP

Traverse make an aio small form factor board too, but xDSL is getting a bit old in the tooth and they've removed the xDSL modem from their more recent board, which you can see some hardware porn of right over here

they also make a full size pci card, the one in the link above is pci-e (the shorter pins one) which is cheaper too. convenient clicky link

hey Herby, wait until you see the kit i purchased recently, bit into my savings for some uber gear which is an artifact memory of my work in IT back in the early 00's

10Gbe optical, really belongs in the datacentre environment at the top rail of a 42U but it will be some fun to setup at home
