Announced over the weekend at BlizzCon, comes word that as of November 14 StarCraft II will become free-to-play on PC via Battle.net. The update will include the Wings of Liberty campaign, access to ranked multiplayer, and all Co-op Commanders up to Level 5. That is outside of Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis – who will be free to everyone.

For those of use that already own StarCraft II or any version, we’ll be getting a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating our founder’s status.

“StarCraft II is one of the highest-rated PC games of all time, and we’re excited to give even more people around the world a chance to find out why it has inspired such a passionate global community,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With the massive Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, endlessly replayable co-op mode, prestigious ranked ladder, comprehensive map-making tools, and more, StarCraft II now delivers the ultimate real-time strategy experience completely free.”

Those looking to continue the StarCraft II story will be able to purchase Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops, individually or together as part of a Campaign Collection in the Blizzard Shop. Also, for a limited time if you own Wings of Liberty but none of the other campaigns you can get Heart of the Swarm as a gift by simply logging into the Blizzard Battle.net desktop app.

With the StarCraft II saga wrapping up campaign-wise over two years ago, this move is a welcome one. If you haven’t played StarCraft II yet, well, now’s the time. Okay, so after November 14. And if you haven’t played for while or are new to the RTS genre, grab a buddy and dive into StarCraft II’s excellent co-op mode – because it’s awesome.

In terms of new content coming to StarCraft II, at BlizzCon we got an announcement of a new two-in-one co-op commander, Mira Han and Matt Horner.

Super news! I knew my plan to not buy those expansions would pay off eventually. Looking forward to dusting it off and giving it another crack.
