Topic: Another thread about ads

I've been running an adblocker for a long time. At first it was out of convenience but when I learnt that ads can be a vector for malware I tightened up my whitelist.

For the longest time this site was on that whitelist, but that recent obtrusive pop up ad and the length of time it took for it to be removed indicated to me that the admins on here have very limited knowledge and control of what ads run. Because of this I pretty much have no websites on my whitelist now.

Just recently I have noticed websites detecting an adblocker and asking me to turn it off or to pay a small fee. I don't go throwing money at just any random website, but if it's one I visit regularly I'll throw them some cash.

Now I am sure the admins have seen and aware of this solution and I think it would be a great option. Sticky a thread up the top with either a $5, $10 or $15 paypal transfer and I do believe people will pay. Still not sure? Add an option if you do pay to have all of Kosta's news items removed from the thread list. The reason they're there is for adclick revenue right? If people are paying then there's no need. Watch the cash ROLL IN!@!@!@

So you think people will pay $15 to read about trog having issues with his mouse or to fill out the latest gaming study that some lazy uni student wants us to do?

Ads are awesome, I would be so lost without ads.

Ads tell me what to buy and how I should feel.

Yeah, without ads how would we know that this genius product exists?

I'ts all about the websites you go to. You guys are getting fast food adds. I'm getting "45 yr old lonely within 5 kms wants to meet to play" and "double ended plastic extrusions now in 300mm dia, 50% off this week"

I pitched this idea as part of the redesign a couple of years back, except rather than asking for direct payment we could just show a little bit of text asking people to turn off their adblocker for this site if they thought we deserved a little reward for the content. Unfortunately the idea didn't gain any traction (like most of the ideas I pitched... I wanted the front page to be as clean as https://medium.com/ etc).

A paypal fund we can spend on buying Trog more props to pose with might be a winner...

When you put too many of them and badly code your page then they start affecting performance considerably.

I had to install adblocker so that ebay would stop freezing chrome multiple times every link I click, once adblocker was in it was back to normal loading times.

Okay, how's this. I'll give you $50*, and I can view this page without all the Kosta spam because the volume of it is utterly f***ing ridiculous. It's the reason the hate-filled (yet strangely compelling) politics thread is the only one that ever gets any traction. Anything that isn't some sort of hot topic gets buried under piles of boring gunk.

*cheques will not be honoured.

why is trog wearing some kind of Splinter Cell cosplay with a nice pair of nv while projecting an aire of intellectualism?

actually it seems about the fitting tribute with the Neil Stephenson and Tom Clancy reads

Me too. Send me the address, I will pay right now. I have always rabidly claimed that the agn spam has contributed to the demise of this once great large forum.

if you find certain thread posters so objectionable and there's $50 to be made, I'll write a Chrome extension to filter them
