Not sure what to title the thread as,
It would seem there is a new player in online News.

http://www.theglobalmail.org/welcome/

philanthropist and internet entrepreneur Graeme Wood, who has pledged $15-20 million to a new, non-profit, online media venture, The Global Mail, with one goal in mind: produce public-interest journalism, no strings attached.

To be launched in February, The Global Mail will not charge readers, will not sell ads and is not chasing more donors. It was born of a dinner party conversation between Wood and former ABC journalist Monica Attard, the site's editor-in-chief."

At the very least this sounds quite interesting.
Kind of like an online 60 minutes only with real Journalism.

Problem is, with exceptionally low standards of evidence, you could declare that the governtments aren't doing a very good job at whatever cover up... From atlantis to stargate.

Governments are Middle Management.

Also, on the OP - we could make gross generalisations about what this media outlet might be like based on the way that it is being set up without having read any articles.

Or we could just wait and see.

That's not a microphone it's an infrared laser pointed at his eye, when he blinks the wavelength changes, so he controls his computer (voice) by blinking, because his hand is getting weaker.

Where was the election when Gillard took over Labor!? It was handed down by our puppet masters!

Seriously though, I am intrigued by this idea, although the problem with "non-profit news agencies" that are funded entirely by one bloke reeks of ye olde days of patronage. Is this going to turn into a mouthpiece for Graeme Wood's agendas (I don't know much about him; saw him speak once at some event and he seemed like a pretty reasonable guy).

And their "one goal" of "public interest journalism"? Do you mean "what the public is interested in"? Or "things that are in the public interest"? Because we already have a news source that does the former - news.com.au.

Also, their tagline: "Our Audience is Our Only Agenda"... umm, wouldn't the truth be a better agenda for a news agency? What does this mean, anyway - you'll do whatever the audience wants? Or you'll do whatever it takes to get an audience?

Also, I don't think much of their website's front page as it stands now. My browser scrolls DOWN, not sideways!

So, I'm intrigued, but I need more information!

Gillard was actually elected to Parliament in some capacity, and she was also Deputy Leader, so when Rudd was sacked it was a fairly logical progression. The technocrats elected to Government leadership in Greece have never been elected to anything.

What a fail troll, trog.

Once again i had a long post to respond to what Trog said but the 10 min edit rule meant i lost my entire post.

... The Age article mentions that Mubarak was loved by his ppl, at least thats what the Western Media thought, in reality he was a Dictator, hated. How did the Media get it so wrong ?
Does that same ignorance happen here ?

Rudds crew would often take one Journalist from the pool and then have that Journalist relay the story to the others upon return. They would announce a visit somewhere only the afternoon before it would take place leaving crews unable to get prepared.
This meant no embarassing questions because only one journo would be present and unlikely to 'rock the boat' it also sent a message to the others, bad press leads to less access to the Government.

you are doing it wrong if you are losing entire posts because of editing. If you start a new thread with what you are doing I will either a) explain what you are doing wrong or b) see if I can reproduce it as a bug. There is no way that I can think of that you should "lose an entire post" because of an edit gone wrong. If you are using a remotely modern browser hitting 'back' should keep the contents of your previous post so you can recover them.

They're both leadership changes - they're the same thing. Rudd's was because the party lost faith, and Greece's was because the rest of the society in which they live in lost faith because it was utterly obvious they were doomed and it risked taking everyone down with them. It's not like a foreign army marched in to Greece to replace the leaders or anything; the current government is a coalition of elected officials.

Anyway, I would have thought you militant capitalists would be happy with the idea of Greece's government getting circumvented by market forces and taken away from the control of the people though! It's a classic example of an overly socialist state getting steamrolled by market forces!! VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

edit: also this is massively off topic, I won't bother responding to anything else about this - why do you guys write big long replies to my one topic jokey post, and ignore the one serious post? :(

this constitutes an abdication of responsibility. the elected officials i.e. should have all resigned their legislative positions and fresh elections called if they are not up to the task.

There are three key elements to a free society: capitalism, liberty and democracy. Democracy requires elected officials to be accountable to the people. When unelected technocrats take executive power, you basically take a giant s*** on democracy.

Furthermore, the change of greece's government was really at the behest of the EU - who threatened not to renew bailout support if they did not change leadership to the preferred technocrats. Further undermining sovereignty. It's about the EU super government rolling Greece. Market forces would have simply resulted in Greece defaulting with no bailouts... Probably a more desirable option.

Cf Gillard: the leader of the government at any time is elected by the government backbench - that is a long standing Westminster tradition. I can't believe you are so ignorant about these things, trog. You have got to be trolling.

Sigh, I am simply drawing the parallel about it being a leadership change; that is all. Can you seriously not see the sarcasm in my first post? I even used the international sign for sarcasm, the "?!" !!!!

I f***ing knew I should have just deleted Faceman's stupid troll post and not replied to it because it would take it off topic; instead I got trolled. What a noob. Let's try to stay on topic for now and talk about this quite interesting new vessel for journalistic stuff, of which I'm sure feedback will be divided in new and interesting ways amongst all us armchair politicians

in regards to the newspaper, everyone is free to start up their own outlet. How is this different to any random blog that has a few contributors, compare to crikey or vexnews?

Well the obvious answer is, it has $15-20m startup capital... it seems ...odd that someone would drop that much money without some sort of agenda. And their trite one-line, Twitter compatible mottos do not seem like a good enough agenda to me (I have Tweeted at them to ask them to expound on their "public interest journalism" comment

Trog for what it's worth you raise some good points. Whilst it is nice to have a "free" unbiased news service they all have some sort of bias, right?
