News of this new engine and the models that it'll be fitted to has already been circulating for a while but an official release from BMW appeared yesterday. Quick summary: - inline 3 litre 6 cyl tri-turbo diesel - 375 bhp / 280 KW @ 4000 rpm - 740 Nm / 546 ft lbs @ 2000 rpm (already cleared 400nm by 1000rpm) - 0-100kph in ~4.8s for the 5 series and ~5.2s for the X's - mated to the new 8-speed auto - electronically limited to 250kph - 6.4 litres/100 kilometres for the 5 series, 7.7 for the X's http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5085/BMW-X6-M50d.html http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5084/BMW-X5-M50d.html http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5082/BMW-M550d-xDrive.html http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/5083/BMW-M550d-xDrive-Touring.html Bring on the M-purist tears BMW just continue to wow with their engine development though - that this little 3-litre thing can move a fat-assed X6/X5 from 0-100 in just over 5 seconds is pretty amazing |

Nice, I think VW should do the same, release a slightly bigger TDI Golf in their performance range |

I can only imagine the cost of owning that thing as it gets older :/
I'm all for engine/transmisison development etc but I really question the complexity of new designs (dsg, multi-turbos etc) and the ongoing costs of maintaining such a thing will more than offset the fuel savings by having such a design*. * yeah I'm assuming but I don't think it's an unreasonable assumption. As an example, I have been looking for a car. Saw an Aurion that looked ok. Did some checks and it turned out that the car had hit a dog, broke the radiator and subsequently cooked the engine. Toyota quoted the repair (and I spoke to Toyota directly) to be $20,000. And this is just a fairly standard V6 :/ No other damage, just the engine. last edited by mission at 10:51:01 27/Jan/12 |

yeh I don't think the idea of many modern efficient, powerful, low-emission engines is lowered ongoing maintenance costs many manufacturers do offer reasonable factory warranty extensions though, so it's not like you have no choice but cop full repair costs if you keep a new car for more than 3-5 years |

- inline 3 litre 6 cyl tri-turbo diesel so hawt chump tax $20k is stealership prices for reals hardware is underestimating the figure a fair but but you could get away for under about 5k radiator + support, front bar, lights probably, engine out, engine in, auto sparky etc if the car was say $10k below market value you'd be doing alright, but you're still driving a write off if you've ever seen how they straighten a chassis out on a jig you'd never buy one |

mission your first misatke was talking to toyota about doing any work on a car that wasn't covered under warranty. There is always a large chump tax involved The story is: The owner of the car wasn’t the first owner. I took note of who the original purchaser was (in the service book) and called them. The guy said his wife was driving it and hit a dog. Anyway, she kept driving not knowing she’d lost all the coolant and the first sign of trouble was the engine seizing… the car was 6 months old with 7,000km on it. As it was an ‘accident’ the insurance company got the car towed to Toyota dealer for assessment. Assessment was ~$20k. Insurance said no to the repairs and gave the owners a new car and picked up the busted one from Toyota dealer and presumably sent it to auctions. This was all up in Bundaberg. Now the car is in Brisbane with 13,000km on it and either: A) A new engine B) A potentially dodgy repair on the old engine C) Engine from the wreckers with god knows how many k's on it D) Who knows Needless to say I gave the car a wide birth as it was too risky for my cash. Cool story, huh? |

To be fair to BMW though, no-one who buys an M series is going to keep it longer than a few years |

Not sure I like the new 3 series front, I'm glad I got the current model. I like the new back though! I'll be very interested to take one of those new 5 series for a drive when they come out! Pity they didn't stick that engine in the 3 ;) |

I can only imagine the cost of owning that thing as it gets older :/ I just forked out 5 grand on fixing broken s*** on my car. You buy a performance car you've got to expect higher costs. If you want cheap then go buy a hyundai. |

Toyota quoted the repair (and I spoke to Toyota directly) to be $20,000. thats so overpriced, what would a brand spanking new engine cost? 3-5k maybe? how does a radiator and labour cost 15k? |

You can only get the parts to make a new engine..... I dunno, but that's what the original owner told me and the Toyota service department confirmed that they pulled the old engine apart and that's what their quote was..... |

Is this your first car? :P My uncle gets around in a 320d, they have a surprising amount of go for their engine size, we swapped cars for a week about 2 years ago, I was getting around in the Z4 which weighs absolutely f*** all and he was completely spun out by the power of it (mostly due to its weight I guess). While the 320d is by no means a 'fast car' it still has some guts, I was impressed with it. |

haha insane + 320d in the same sentence. Is this your first car? :P no idiot, i had a 320i before that and the power from the 320d is like you got an extra 500cc in the engine for free. PLUS it's 50% more fuel efficient. I have driven an M3, an X6 a 335 and a 325 so I know what they feel like. no it's not a sports car, no you don't drive it on two wheels but this thread is discussing diesel engines and all I can say is that the increase in performance is noticeable over petrol. So STFU :) |

haha BAM :P Well I took the 320 s***rol for a spin and I think I could have walked faster :) I'm glad they have stepped it up with the diesel. The Z4 was pretty good for what it was, I liked that. |

haha BAM :P If memory serves it's something like a 100kw 1.9L 4cyl engine in the 320i.. they are entirely gutless, not really a fair comparison for the 320d imo. |
