Interesting clip about DMC which is still producing the original Delorean car. Ironically, a new Electric version produces more horsepower than the original drivetrain.

2015 is the year hoverboards, mr fusion, hovercar conversions and jaws 19. So we don't have very long for 14 or 15 jaws films (depending if you count 'cruel jaws').

Seems like DMC has managed to ride the nostalgia wave from the BttF flicks quite well.
Bit of a shame though, imagine if Volkswagen decided to not bother with anything else and just endlessly continued producing the '63 model bug because of the Herbie series.

I saw a DeLorean in North Brisbane a few weeks back, hadn't seen one since 1999. EV conversion on a car like this is pretty cool, as long as muppets don't stick too much BTFF junk all over their cars.

some what related, here's a thread I read ages ago on someone converting a 1990 Toyota to Pure EV.

There's one that jets around Logan. A guy up the road in England used to have a Porsche 924 and a Delorean, he didn't drive very much, they were always in the garage!

There's around a dozen DeLoreans in south-east QLD but many owners don't take theirs out regularly. They honestly attract more attention than a Ferrari would. When I'm out and about, someone takes a photo of me literally every 3 minutes. It's crazy.

The realistic price of DeLoreans already in Australia varies from 20k to 80k, normally hovering around the 40k mark. Though you really get what you pay for... Don't even bother buying a 20k run-down DeLorean as a fixer-upper, hoping to save money; you're going to end up spending hundreds of hours & paying another 20k for spare parts!

Sorry for the stalking-ness. I have alerts set up for whenever anyone near Brisbane talks about a DeLorean. :p I'm serious when I say that people are constantly taking photos, the first thing I do when I get home from driving the car is to jump online & look at the photos people took of me. My number plate makes it especially memorable, moreso than other local DeLoreans that have combinations like 81DMC (which is fitted to a DeLorean made in 1981). A bloke in Jindalee has MCFLY.

I'm in the south central Brisbane area, near Coorparoo. I try to take my car out for a spin once a week so you might see me around :)

What ?
DMC went bust in the early 80s, the CEO something DeLorian died a few years back.

IF a DMC is going to produce a new Delorian, it will be a new DMC company surely.

If you watch the video it explains it. Some guy bought the rights to the company, and has started making cars under their name again.

Hey now, the bloke with the blue one's a really nice guy! He's helped me a few times with mine. Some people like to keep to themselves but a lot of the local owners know each other. We help each other out with advice, tools, an extra hand when working on the car and combining shipping when ordering parts from the states.

A photo from a recent gathering on the 7th of January at Wellington Point (mine's on the far end): http://www.riumplus.com/delorean/120107_meetup6.jpg

The original DeLorean Motor Company from the 80s went bankrupt. Ownership of the name changed hands a few times but now it belongs to a crowd named the DeLorean Motor Company (Houston). As it says in the video they service, repair, restore & sell DeLoreans. They own the DMC trading name, original car blueprints, machine tools etc and have a whole warehouse full of spare parts. They have so many spare parts they'll sell you a "new" car assembled from unused spare parts if you want. They're partnering with Epic EV to make & sell electric DeLoreans assembled out of these spare parts.

I only take my DeLorean out on weekends. The other car I drive is a 100% electric Blade Electron mk V, the first sold to private hands in QLD. http://www.riumplus.com/hidden/blade_electron6.jpg

...I figured if people are going to call me a nerd, I might as well go all-out. :p

Given your career and you already have an electric vehicle would you consider converting your delorean if it was possible?

It's possible; any car can be converted to electric with enough money. I've gone far enough that I've contacted some engineers about the best way to do it & obtained some rough quotes. Although honestly I don't think I'll do it for many years. I had to pay a lot of money to get the petrol engine serviced & restored, I'd like to use it a little before I rip it out! Plus it'll let the prices, performance & range of electric car parts improve a little. Things are still pretty expensive for a "reasonable" electric vehicle.

The Dolrean with the numberplate "MCFLY" in Jindalee/Sumner park belongs to my mates boss.

As for converting petrol to electric it can be, and has been done.

There is a guy in Perth who has converted both a charade and Ute to run on batteries.
And there is a guy in Sydney turning a 92' 318is BMW electric as well, as he has already done an astina in the states. Trying to get the message across that not all electric cars are bubble like pieces of s***, they can be fun to.

Yeah it wouldn't be something I'd do until the engine in it was due to be replaced anyway, and I meant more possible to get a 'kit' together cost effectively, not whether it was possible fullstop.

The whole electric thing has been done, which isn't really the point of the thread, my fav one of those is probably the electric Toyota Sera. That car was futuristic in 1990 and is still pretty crazy looking today. It almost was like a prius before anyone cared. It kind of makes sense for someone to engineer an electric motor for it.

Never even heard of that car! I can only see on the specs page that the range is "100km urban driving" - how do you find it?

The whole electric thing has been done

I hear that opinion a lot but I've never understood it... Just because one person has a specific model of electric car, why does that mean "it's been done" & there's no point to anyone else doing it? I built a liquid-cooled computer with a radiator borrowed from a car's AC condenser, does that mean "it's been done" & no one else should bother? Electric cars aren't just a piece of artwork or an achievement, they have a practical use too :p

Made from the same series of weatherproof fiberglass case as the movie one, it lights up with both corner lights & the central chasers, has a strobe in the middle plus a hidden speaker that makes the sound of buzzing high-voltage electricity. The only variation is that I installed three vials of glowing, radioactive Tritium (the ones above "shield" & "light"). They wouldn't let me get any Plutonium. I tried. Something about the danger.

...yeah having one is really the only way to stop people asking that question. Which happens a lot. :p

Unlike other manufacturers that will specify "up to 260km of range" when you really only get 90km in real-world conditions, Blade's range estimates were pretty much accurate. I get between 80-100km on a full charge, depending upon if it's city or highway driving (the increased air resistance at high speeds is what kills your range). Using the A/C only knocks off around 5km. 80-100km sounds small on paper but it's not that restrictive. Blade have larger battery banks available for more money but when I did the numbers I realised that I actually don't need the extra range. I live near Coorparoo and it'll get me from here to Redcliffe & back on a single charge, or to Ipswich & back. You don't "refuel" it once a week like you would a petrol car, since you plug it in every time you pull into your garage it's better to think of it as 80-100km a day. More if you can borrow a power point at your destination :p

I haven't met all the local DeLorean owners yet, it's hard to organise a time when everyone is free & their cars are all running. But everyone I've met so far has been pretty awesome. :)

so the blade is a EV in a getz body, (functional and i'm not s***ting on that, a good bed to build on)

however in the photo, there is a normal wet cell car battery there are well, is that normal in a pure EV (to have a second battery type) or a safety requirement (you know to run the hazard lights etc)

how much did you pay for the blade?

Not much change from 50k. ...yeah there was one heck of a price premium to be the first. But someone had to do it.

It's surprising how so many things aren't designed for electric cars. For instance, according to QLD Transport it's registered as a 1-cylinder petrol engine because there is no option on the paperwork to register a vehicle with an electric engine. I had to obtain an exemption to the electrical code to install the charging hookup in our garage because that kind of connection is currently disallowed in a residential building. I've had some interesting conversations with the BCC, requesting they consider allocating & installing public charging facilities for future use, but they respond that electric cars aren't commercially available yet so they'll wait a year or two... Oh really, then what have I been driving since last year, a walrus-powered car? They weren't aware of a lot of these problems until someone tried to register an electric car in QLD.

is that one of those "Nite Glowrings" ?

Actually I sourced them from fishing lures I imported direct from a manufacturer in China. Similar thing though. Except I've no idea why anyone would be stupid enough to submerge cheap Chinese vials of Tritium in water that's obviously clean enough you're fishing in it, that's just asking for an accident.

the blade is a EV in a getz body

Mechanically speaking, yes. They start with a Getz & turn it into a Blade. But technically speaking it's considered a standalone vehicle that has been inspected, crash-tested, certified & is registered as its own separate vehicle, not a conversion. So it's officially a car that just so happens to share lots of its parts with a Getz. Not a huge distinction in practice but it matters to certain govt departments. It also makes spare parts easy since it's not like the Getz is an uncommon car!

in the photo, there is a normal wet cell car battery there are well, is that normal in a pure EV

I can't speak for all electric cars but I've seen a few others that have this same setup. In this model Blade, the big battery bank runs at ~180V & its main job is to power the 37kW wheel-turning motor (for anyone with electronics experience, yes that does mean the batteries deliver 180 volts at 200+ amperes for a staggering 37,000 watts of electricity when you're accelerating... this is how come running the A/C barely decreases your range & how come everything is sealed in metal boxes!). Basically everything else (lights, radio, windshield wipers, alarm, cigarette lighter, A/C, dash instrumentation & charging/control circuitry) all runs off the standard 12V battery, which is only topped up from the main battery bank when the car is running. I think it's for ease of conversion but it also means that if you leave the lights on they won't drain your main battery bank.
