Hey all, just wanting to know what is a good Wireless Access Point for a modem. So something that plugs into a modems Ethernet port and then just allows wireless, obviously. I'm thinking something to do with Netgear, but open to ideas and suggestions! |

a Wireless Access Point is the name of what you're after
and unless you're doing something crazy, just about any brand will do the trick |

Haha yeah, I was a bit stuck on the name, figured adapter will do. So would a cheapo one do the trick? |

Forget the usual brand-names like Netgear, DLink, etc. 90% of their wireless products are utter s***.
Go something like the TP-Link TL-MR3420 from Umart for $48. Does wireless N at 300Mbps. Use only the LAN ports and set the WAN port to a bogus IP address and subnet and don't plug anything into it - that's effectively access-point mode. last edited by parabol at 19:10:13 08/Aug/11 |

I generally stick to Netgear or Linksys. Netgear has probably one of the easiest configuration menu's to navigate imo. Linksys having recently started adding some funky options to their gear though like guest wireless and usb for NAS style attached storage if any of that sort of thing interests you. Not sure if Netgear has similar options, it's been a while since I've purchased a Netgear device.

I'm not to picky with menus, all it needs to do is provide wirless to the girls I live with, as my computer is setup in the study connected to the modem. |

What are you using as the modem at the moment? Is it also a router with a few LAN ports? |

Apple Airport Express http://www.apple.com/au/airportexpress/ If you have a machine on the network with iTunes, the airport will automatically show up as a set of speakers You can play music to any device that is plugged into the Audio jack (toslink & 3.5mm) via iTunes (and control it with devices like iPhone/iPad etc) plus, 802.11n and they're cheap + highly reliable + high quality etc etc |

plus, 802.11n and they're cheap lol @ $119 being cheap. You can get two decent 802.11n APs for that price by avoiding Apple, given most people don't need the fancy features you quote. The Apple reality distortion field is strong on this forum. |

As far as dsl modem routers go, the Fritzbox 7390 is the shiz. There's even an iphone app for it to take landline calls over wifi.

Airport Express is great if only for the AirTunes feature. Nothing rocks more than walking into the house with my headphones in, getting in-range of WiFi and pressing a button on my iPhone to suddenly have it playing over the living room speakers. |

Yeah that sounds perfect for a share house with girls. No the other thing, that sounds terrible. |
