Topic: Fox orders modern day sequel to Carl Sagan's "Cosmos"

No idea what to expect yet, but Sagan's wife is involved, as is the other original writer for Cosmos (Steven Soter), so it could make for a very interesting summary of what is and isn't known right now on that front, for those of us such as myself who are only half in the loop. Tis also helmed by Seth MacFarlane.

The guy hosting it is Neil deGrasse Tyson, who I only know from the episode in Stargate Atlantis where they got a ton of celebrity scientists to play themselves in a science-disaster-on-earth episode.

I'm most excited by their description, here's to hoping that they make it interesting -
The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience."

I've only ever seen bits and pieces of the original everywhere, and have always intended to watch it, but also really wished for a modern complete-summary as well. Either way, I know it's been a huge inspiration for many of us to be better human beings, from the segments caught here and there. :D

Ah sweet, from the first video he seems like a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to this. :D

Just slightly concerned about the "Fox" association - in my experience that's usually a bad thing, somehow.

Yep, I shuddered when I heard "Fox" but then when I heard Neil deGrasse Tyson I sighed with relief.

COSMOS was so awesome though. Hard to imagine a new and improved version, but Neil is the guy for the job, that's for sure.

Neil Degrasse Tyson is awesome, I remember watching an interview with him, was pretty long, went for like an hour or something, but I just couldn't stop watching. Think it might have even been posted here at some point (or possibly I got it from facebook), either way, if you can find it, watch it. Just the way he so thoroughly and absolutely destroys the arguments of creationists or ignorant asses like Bill O'Reilly with real cold, hard facts is a joy to watch. And hes so passionate about his work, and his field, and just science in general, its contagious.

Found it, this is the interview I was talking about, its almost an hour in length but if you find yourself with an hour to spare, its absolutely worth it.

I've been awake since 6am and done a grand total of about 20 minutes work, what's another hour going to hurt? >_>

Looks good, will start now. :D - edit: 90 seconds in and already he has me ensnared with his ensnareyness.

Khel - the interviewer basically asks for Neil to do something like Cosmos (or at least what I was hoping for - a brief run down of current scientific knowledge) at around 19m20s, heh.

Bloody hell Khel, that's the best interview I've ever listened to, I've never heard such an intelligent person speak like that before.

It was probably my Facebook, I posted that on Facebook earlier this year/late last year, when I was going through a Neil deGrasse Tyson phase. I was watching everything of his I could find. I'd still be doing it now if I hadn't already watched most of his long videos on YouTube. :(

Super pumped for this series. He's such an awesome guy to watch. He engages the audience in such a cool way, and never gets boring, even after hours of talking.

He is so not suited to a Cosmos sequel, Brian Cox looks like Sagan's son and has that "holy s*** I'm so high right now" thing going on in his wonders of the universe series. Actually you should check out that wonders of the universe series because it seemed to be like a modern day cosmos.

Truly love this guy now, can't believe I'd never seen any of his stuff before the Cosmos news:

knowing the kind of propaganda / religious garbage that comes out of FOX, I have little doubt this will suck. considering FOX's stance on everything science i really cant see this being worth watching..

of course time will tell..

Nah, he's too much of a strong personality for that to happen. It will be good.

The question is really, "What is FOX's agenda?"

It's kind of like, they say one good trustful thing so they can tell you another one hundred lies and you will believe them. Boy that cried, "Wolf!" type of material. That's my speculative opinion anyway.

As you say, time will tell!

Apparently even Murdoch thinks that the guy who runs Fox is a nutjob, but keeps him around because his manipulation and fear mongering makes good money. I can't help but wonder, if you believe that your actions are harmful to your nation but profitable to you, does that equal intentful treason?

But does it not? Doing, what you believe is, harm to your nation, for profit? Not my idea of a desirable citizen at least.

Well, it's the whole question about how much power a media empire actually has, isn't it?

I think it's clear in this age that mature people have the responsibility to select their own sources. Can people be trusted to choose reliable media sources? Of course not. Doesn't mean you take away their rights though. You just have to hope that there are more intelligent people than not, ultimately ;)

FOX /= FOX News.

Granted there is some spillover here and there but you must remember that Simpsons and Family Guy, two of FOX's biggest cash cows are both created by atheists and often have a rather anti-religion slant.

It was a passing thought Pinky, but ftr, I wasn't suggesting the censorship of any legitimately held views. Tisn't Murdoch's views - it's his product, he is selling it believing that it is poison.

Murdoch has been called many things in his time, but desirable citizen isn't among them.
