From an Australian group too it seems.

A lot of commentary claimed that it doesn't allow for decent animation (no real time combining, and no mesh morphing, only rotation). Though John Carmack has apparently said that the tech might be viable in a few years.

Cool video Nerfy. I can't wait to see what games will look like in another 10 years or so. Gonna be awesome. Although I hope I'm around when someone invents a working holodeck.

Holy s***. Imagine bethesda getting their hands on this for the next fallout game. running on dirt could shift the tiny little dirt particles and all sorts of crazy s***.

Interesting, and a little comical. I don't know much about the gaming world or graphics programming, but I gotta say that whole video sounded like a typical pseudo-science pitch for unlimited energy. Is this group asking anyone for money? If so, I'd be hugely cautious :)

A lot of the commentary decried it as vapour-wear and a scam fund-raising attempt Billy, but Carmack (apparently) giving it the potential nod may suggest there's more to it. The word voxel was thrown around a lot, so I think that the approach and limitations are well known, and these guys are perhaps just pushing/refining it.

Cool video Nerfy.

I go by Nerfy somewhere or other online, not sure if stalker or just comical-name-user'er. >_>

I was wondering what happened to this lot.

Voxel style graphics have been around for a while now, but they work very differently to polygon graphics. Computing animation on a large set of voxels would be very expensive.

They must be pulling a lot of optimisation tricks to display all that detail because displaying all the world voxels at once would just not be possible.

Did Carmack get to see their code or something? Otherwise, this would be an appeal to authority, which is again a hallmark of scam!

Or it's fake :)

For the record though, I hope it's real and don't really have any reason to suspect it's not - just pointing out the similarities of this demo with groups that try to get people to invest in unlimited energy machines.

That looks insane... if real.

What I can't work out is how the hell you texture a point cloud? Hmmm.

He's probably aware of the technique, since he's often personally been part of pushing the boundaries. He may have just been commenting on the approach in general, working on the assumption that it's not pre-rendered because he knows what is roughly doable.

And there's so many mights and maybes and apparentlys in anything that I say, that I'd wager that I'm near-immune to making any overly-bold-claim fallacies. :P

Well, it looks real enough to me. Clearly a work in progress though. Good luck to them.
I would add though that game play is not dependant on levels of detail. If the game isnt fun, I dont care how real it looks.

Pro tip, get someone else to narrate the next vid, please.

Yeah I had similar thoughts, should have qualified. Fancy is nice, but I'm happy with gameboy games so long as they're more fun. :P
