I'd almost go with the "pick which ever console has the most games you want to play" line personally.

The Sega Megadrive should get a mention - even though it didn't reproduce high end arcade fighter games as well as the Nintendo SNES/Famicon did, it was upgradeable and good value. It was sad to see Sega disappear, but they spawned millions of hardcore PC gamers in their time. last edited by koopz at 15:10:09 25/Jul/10

Agreed - I started on a megadrive then moved onto the PC and became extremely competitive ( 2nd in Australia in quake2 among lots of other quake related trophies)
I now hold over 20 World Records in Dirt 2
Probably lots of megadrives still going out there.

I can't really comment on this thread other than the last console I played a lot before moving to PC was the SNES (which was awesome)..

Classic consoles to me are:
Atari 2600 (my first console)
SEGA Master System
NES
Sega Megadrive (probably spent more playing hours on this than the others)
SNES

I've been hunting games lately for both Snes and sega master system. I'm trolling ebay trying to find good bargins for all the games I remember playing as a kid and loving them, as I plan on setting up a AVGN style console corner in my room. So far I got 5 games all boxed with manuals and all inserts and i've got another 8 or so on my list.

I think it's fair that an outdated console can be judged by the ROMs that are popular. For instance, if you look at the emulators and releases available for SNES games versus PSX, you'll find tons for the former.
Similarly you'll find people still go after the original Sonic games, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast...

Based on that I'd be saying SNES all the way, when you consider titles like Zelda, Secret of Mana, NBA Jam, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mario Kart, Metroid.
NES you still get people looking for Battletoads, Mario 2/3...

Something to consider I guess.

On that point Raven, PSX (and later consoles) never had the crisp clean emulators that the earlier consoles had. Not sure about now, they're probably still broken, I spent several weeks trying to get an N64 emulator working back mid-Xbox-gen but quit out of frustration.

ZSNES is perfection.

Hah I know pave, especially when they used to play it on that kids gameshow "AMAZING".

Looks like the point was to swim really fast and fluid, sandbox style, didn't seem to have a goal /shrug.

Playing it on the PC is 1 thing but having the actual console and game is so much more satisfying I feel.

Hope you realise most of the 'Classic' games have been remade. Some remade in HD for ps3 and probably xbox aswell.
'MegaDrive Classics' has alot of the old games for PS3

XBox because you can emulate all the other consoles on it.

I also have the xbox with emulators but for mine it's only really worth it for MAME and my X arcade stick... Epic win right there and full of awesomeness...

But i wouldn't bother with SNES emulators on it etc cause it's soooo much better to play on an original with an original controller.

I say SNES for best console, and Mario Kart definately the winner for my time, but i can't go passed the PS1 for FF7 either... man what a game....

I love MAME and my XArcade but I spend more time playing Kings Bounty in DGen on my PSP than I do any other game. Dunno why I am just addicted to it :).
