I would get a Nintendo 64 over a gamecube
a ps2 over a ps1 a snes over an xbox and I wouldn't bother about gameboys My choice would be N64, ps2 and Snes or emulate if you only want to take a trip down memory lane for one or two games? |

SNES is the only classic one you listed, and even that is from the 90s. s***, Xbox is newer than QGL. Some of these happened after 9/11. And where are the Segas?
Xbox - 2001 Gamecube - 2001 SNES - 1991 Nintendo 64 - 1997 PS One - 1994 GB advance sp - 2003 Gameboy Micro - 2005 Playstation 2 - 2000 Hardly classics. |

+2 for the Dreamcast. Find one somewhat cheaply on eBay and grab some of the more awesome titles and you're set. Failing that, a SNES is always a surefire winner.
Of course if you really want to go out there, see if you can hunt down a decently priced Turbografx-16 + CD drive or PC-Engine Duo-R (same thing, just different regions).. Some classic (and hard to find) stuff right there. |

No, Mac and me was the worst movie ever made. It was a kids movie rip off of ET where the alien has to eat BIG MACS or it will die. Imagine watching that movie for over an hour. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_and_me If you want a good cringe worthy old style computer game tv show, check out AUTOMAN. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQb1ZD9W8_c My work here is done. |

sega megadrive.
If I had to pick anything from that list though, I'd pick none. I wouldn't buy an optical media based device that old because I doubt you can buy the dvd drive for them anymore if the laser is burned out (my xbox won't read discs anymore) and all the nintendo * consoles have is mario & donkey kong so thumbs down. |

SNES, though only because I loved Mario kart, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 on it.
I made my choice based upon the home consoles ability to reproduce arcade games. The Sega Megadrive should get a mention - even though it didn't reproduce high end arcade fighter games as well as the Nintendo SNES/Famicon did, it was upgradeable and good value. It was sad to see Sega disappear, but they spawned millions of hardcore PC gamers in their time. Nintendo just seem to spawn more console users it seems :( It's better to burn out than fade away last edited by koopz at 15:10:09 25/Jul/10 |

Game Boy Micro only supports Game Boy Advance games. With the Game Boy Advance SP you can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. Also, not all Game Boy Advance accessories work with the Game Boy Micro.

snes also rocks, i still have mine I threw mine out when I discovered emulators, though it's nice being able to legally buy old SNES games on the Wii now. I'd prefer that they were available on PC/Steam however. Would I spend a casual $200 rebuying my SNES collection on Steam tomorrow if it was available? Yes - yes I would. |

Snes is the only classic console on the list so I pick that. However even if given the choice between NES, Snes, SMS, Mega drive i'd still pick Snes hands down. SMS close second.

@xutech im an automan fan from way back. so job isnt done here soz.
true on mac and me but i said one of the worst movies. so 'no', back at you. as for classic consoles. snes would have to win imo. would you really play any old skool game more than mariokart and mario allstars? the only one i can think of is rygar on the lynx as it goes with my arcade pedigree from the 80's. back when most you c***s were playing operation and thinking its the latest in games, until mousetrap came out. if mame was a console, id choose it. |

Sega Mega Drive. By far gets the most usage out of all my old consoles. N64 gets a decent run with goldeneye and mario kart, but boozy 4 player shared controller micro machines never disappoints. Mortal Kombat 1-3, SF2 are big hits too.
Master system has good retro appeal, but isn't as genuinely fun as the others. SNES is ok, but doesn't have as many good multiplayer games. Original xbox is good, modded with heaps of emulators, but it's just not the same without the right shaped controller. xbox games are a little too new to have any retro charm, though operation desert storm 2 rocks. Old gaming nights are fun, and invariably 3 thing happen - epic micro machines til 3am, 2 player coop NBA Jam til well past dawn and a playthrough of ninja turtles. Also, the old segas are really easy to mod for AV outputs. |

NBA Jam was the s***. Back when basketball games were good. I remember I made my own character, had a massive head, and had the worst stats possible. Like 1 everything and named her Bertha. She was horrible at shooting, running, jumping and pretty much everything else and yet somehow managed to get her the MVP award for that game.

Although there are a few scenes set in McDonalds. I grew up with Mac and Me, and never saw ET till I was a teen. It's actually a fantastic movie. Makes me feel warm inside to watch it these days. |

I remember watching Mac and Me as a kid and enjoying it, with exception of the part where the alien gets sucked into the space thing nasa has lurking around on the moon or where ever it was. That part f***ing terrified me into sleepless nights.

IMO The SNES is the clear option of that list. PS1 or PS2's have the most ridiculous list of titles to choose from, but neither really rates as a classic... For mine, it's down to SNES or Master System, and as I haven't previously owned a SNES, that's where I'd spend up. |

lol thermite. I remember watching Mac and Me as a kid and yes I saw it before ET as well (actually I don't think I have ever seen ET in it's entirety, only in bits and pieces) and I saw it recently and it was the biggest pile of crap I had ever watched.

I can't really comment on this thread other than the last console I played a lot before moving to PC was the SNES (which was awesome)..
Classic consoles to me are: Atari 2600 (my first console) SEGA Master System NES Sega Megadrive (probably spent more playing hours on this than the others) SNES |

I've been hunting games lately for both Snes and sega master system. I'm trolling ebay trying to find good bargins for all the games I remember playing as a kid and loving them, as I plan on setting up a AVGN style console corner in my room. So far I got 5 games all boxed with manuals and all inserts and i've got another 8 or so on my list.

I think it's fair that an outdated console can be judged by the ROMs that are popular. For instance, if you look at the emulators and releases available for SNES games versus PSX, you'll find tons for the former.
Similarly you'll find people still go after the original Sonic games, Alex Kidd, Altered Beast... Based on that I'd be saying SNES all the way, when you consider titles like Zelda, Secret of Mana, NBA Jam, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mario Kart, Metroid. NES you still get people looking for Battletoads, Mario 2/3... Something to consider I guess. |

On that point Raven, PSX (and later consoles) never had the crisp clean emulators that the earlier consoles had. Not sure about now, they're probably still broken, I spent several weeks trying to get an N64 emulator working back mid-Xbox-gen but quit out of frustration.
ZSNES is perfection. |

I also have the xbox with emulators but for mine it's only really worth it for MAME and my X arcade stick... Epic win right there and full of awesomeness... But i wouldn't bother with SNES emulators on it etc cause it's soooo much better to play on an original with an original controller. I say SNES for best console, and Mario Kart definately the winner for my time, but i can't go passed the PS1 for FF7 either... man what a game.... |
