Topic: Cheap AGP or PCI (if desparate) video card for old PC

I am temporarily resurrecting an old Full Tower PC to get access to some PATA hard drives on the machine but the fan on the Geforce2 MX440 AGP video card is stuffed. Does anyone out there have a fan for one of these or a cheap or unneeded AGP video card (I'll accept a PCI if necessary) that they do not want?

I've got an old geforce 2 mx200(I think that's the model) lying around here somewhere that's no longer needed....

That would be good - AGP or PCI (not that it really matters)?

silly question but doesn't your mobo have at least one PATA connector? all of mine have had them, even the higher end boards.

PATA connectors are fine but there is no onboard video and the current AGP video card's fan is stuffed so I didn't want to risk overheating the video card. This is the one time I wish this PC had on-board video.

I think he was suggesting your main PC would have a pata connector so you could just pull out your hdds and plug them into your current machine to get data..

Problem is that my other PC's are both notebooks (I probably should have mentioned that before... bad me..)

Oh, and yeah that's what I was suggesting. If you can't get a card you can buy IDE -> USB adapters from jaycar I think, and possibly other places that sell online.

I'll keep that in mind as an option if necessary - hopefully I can get my hands on a replacement card without buying a new graphic card which I will not use the capabilities of until I get a new desktop PC after end of financial year at the earliest (if I do not get a new high-powered laptop at that time and then put together a HTPC).

You could also buy a cheap IDE 3.5" HDD enclosure, MSY should sell them for under $20.

Do you think it would be safe for me to work with the current video without the fan at this time until I can get something sorted out. At least I can get started on sorting through what is on the drives before I transfer the data off (so at least I would have got something done this weekend that I had planned)

I probably wouldn't use it without the fan, even though you're not using it in any games it's probably not worth the risk of frying it and having it take out another component.
got any case fans you can jerry rig to the card? make a cone out of paper to adapt the larger size fan or something?

Nope - I'll hang off until I get something sorted - it will just have to be soon since I want to go through the drives if possible before the Easter long weekend as I have been sitting on this for awhile.

I've come across plenty of old cards like mx200's and 440's with passive heatsinks, if all your doing is 2d stuff you could easy get away with running with no fan. If your card runs particularly warm, just point a desk fan at your cases internals (leave your side panel off.) while your getting the data off the drives.

I was going to suggest just running the card with no fan.

And what risk? It's an MX440, there's no risk. Even if it blows up some of the suggestions posted so far cost more than replacing the entire vid card which you couldn't even sell if you tried. I gave away an MX440 this year to mooby because he wanted one. That's how valuable they are.

What I will do is do a check at work tomorrow to see if there is any old cards floating around that I can have and no one wants - otherwise if anyone has one, I'll probably take them up on their offer as I will probably need a bit of time just in case there is no operating system on the boot drive (it's been awhile since I've run the machine which is why I have had it opened to check what's working and what's not) and I need to install XP on the boot drive (since the system has four HDD's in it) before I start going through the drives and transferring the data off.

dude what, just turn that s*** on
fans dont do much more than dissipate the heat faster
the heatsink will still keep it reasonably cool, if you were really worried you could put a pedestal fan blowing into the case but i dont think its necessary - especially if all you're doing is copying files, I wouldn't go playing any games though

Just to let people know that I managed to track down a working AGP video card and get my PC back up and running. Thank you to everyone for their help.
