Ice T will show you how :) (yeah I know, posted it before, it just seems right for this moment)

Also, I have a hard drive that causes the system to lock on bootup if its attached to the motherboard. Do you think any of the above (other than Ice T) might help?

You don't get paid 160 per hour though, do you :) Following the basic business model of thirds you'd be on about 50-55?

Mind you I'll eat my f***ing words happily and cheer you if you're on 300k+ PA dude.

Back on topic, if it was a very good friend I'd do it for nothing depending on time available. Otherwise I just do the 'sorry can't help you, that's a bit specialised' bit and hands-off.

Given the harddrive has priceless memories on it I'm guessing his missus (after the yelling and screaming) just told him to fix it. Charge whatever you like, I wouldn't do a job like that for less than $500. I'd also be charging them $100 just to look at it and see what can be done.

heh.. for dr jobs I do.

the idea of it being stupidly expensive is that it shocks the client into taking backups seriously.

$500 is pretty dam cheap really, most of the jobs I send in are in the 4-9k bracket. Some impressive s*** too even one that was fire damaged and had the ide connector melted clean off, and needed a new board and the motor was fused. Normally I cap most dr jobs at 5 hours labor, charge rate is $96 + GST + board if needed of which I see about $28 an hour for every hour billed anything I can't fix gets forwarded on to someone like cbl, there isn't anyone I would trust in nz to do it properly.

If you're looking for forensic style data recovery, Kroll Ontrack at South Brisbane are really good. IIRC, they'll charge you $99 for a quote and details of exactly what they can recover. After that, it's between about $600 and $3200 to recover the data (regardless of the quantity, the determining factor is the difficulty of the recovery).

Tell them you were recommended to them by a member of the SMBIT Professionals group. Might get you a discount (but might not :P)
