How weak was that 30 min Blockbuster on The Tunnel sat night on 9 ?

Someone take their vid camera and do a video of the whole tunnel journey.
add some obscure but cool trance music to it then upload it.

If you seriously want to watch someone drive through a tunnel how boring is your life? I'm not saying your statement is true and you weren't being sarcastic but there are people out there in youtube land who actually do like to watch weird s*** like that, some even get off on watching people try to start old engines... wtf?

Maybe the e-toll billing system uses the same system as telstra, i.e. it randomly stops working for a few months and you get a free ride, but it only applies to certain people?

speaking of e-tag..

Was told by someone working on the new bridge, that when you drive up old bridge and go pass the speed signs there is an e-toll on them and takes 17c off, without anyone knowing then when you go through the gates you get snapped the usual amount.

the clem7 is launching a new tolling system flowtoll.com.au the costs of the toll are the same, but fees and charges are a little lighter on. also works on any toll road in australia.

Competition in tolling companies is good. It's why I still use an eTag/Govia/whatever the f*** they are calling themselves today in Melbourne because it's cheaper than a CityLink toll.

Some questions if you could help, much appreciated.

1. If i don't have an etoll/flowtoll thing can i still go through the tunnel while it's free?

2. I heard the tunnel is two lanes with no room for broken down cars to park. So if someone breaks down there will be only one lane without anywhere to move the car too until the tow truck comes?

Thnx

1. you will be able to go through free without an etoll/flowtoll account.
2. afaik they have the whole thing under survallance (sp?) and if you break down they will most likely pull you out before you reach for the phone to call a tow truck.

Atleast there will be plenty of warning signs through the tunnel with the amount of digital screens that have been put up, when someone f***s up on the riverside expressway its always a mess

They push you out. The BCC has those quick response trucks with cushioned bumpers on the front, they just roll up behind you, tell you to get off the brake, put it in neutral and then they push.

Can someone clarify for me what the hell they mean about "stay in your lane"?

Are they saying that unless there's a breakdown etc, you stay in the lane you entered the tunnel in? So, if I entered in the left lane, I'm stuck in the left lane until the other side? Even if I've got a d******* geriatric/asian female driver doing 40km/h?

Or is more a case of "like with all overtaking, don't do it just for s***s and giggles and exercise a bit of caution etc"?

Edit: punctuation fail :(

3. I heard that the reason you have your lights on is incase the power goes out, they dont have backup generators etc for the lights. Anyone know if this is true? That would be freeky.

If anyone has been out driving in think foresty type roads during a no-moon/slim crescent moon with the forest either side of you and turned off your lights, you woudl know how s*** scary and dark it is to feel your car hurtling at about 80km/h without a single bit of light.

Nah, the Illuminati have special hidden tunnels built into it to drain the water away. They're hoarding it in giant subterranean pools to gradually increase the temperature of the earth through increasing drought. Once their plan comes to fruition, they'll come out into the open and rule us like the lizard gods they truly are.

;)

The cost of the tunnel was on the radio all day, after the free period ends and the discounts are gone it's something stupid like $4.30 to go through this tunnel. All I can say is: f*** you millionaire cambell, not all of us have billions to spend every time we want to take a f***ing drive somewhere.

IMHO it's a government conspiracy to make driving too expensive pushing us to either car pool or use public transport in order to save fuel/emissions/give the greedy c***s in power more money.
You really think they wouldn't have some kind of back-up system for the lights, really?

Not to defend gamer but this is Australia, we're not exactly on the forefront of anything technological as far as roads go. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if there wasn't any backup power for the tunnel. Power goes out and the emergency fans just shut off and everyone gets toasted.

Either way, I have no pity for them.

Guys,

I was the safety manager for the guys that designed the tunnel. Its good to see this finally finished - so to answer your questions.

1) if it rains, there are sumps at the bottom of the tunnel connected to massive pumps that suck out 150L of water every second. Its designed to not flood unless there is a 1/100 year rainfall event.

2) the tunnel is circular but youll notice when you drive through it that its square. thats due to the top quarter of the tunnel being used for venting / smoke extraction if theres a fire. The bottom quarter is for water / cables etc.

3) if someone catches fire down there, there's deluge systems that can pump out ~3600mm of water an hour. The tunnel is also concrete because tar burns, concrete doesn't.

4) mobile phones will work inside. Radios will work inside. both are rebroadcasted.

5) if you get stuck, just chill. The cameras down there are motion sensitive so they throw an alarm as soon as traffic stops moving. The lane your stuck in is automatically closed and theres a 2 person towtruck crew sitting in the control room 24/7 ready to go and grab you. Additionally, there are two operators in the control room 24/7. Dont get out of your car. Just chill and turn on your radio and they will tell you what to do.

Well they rebroadcast all the major stations, so if they want to talk to you they just kill the feeds from the control room and inject their voice over the rebroadcast signal. You woudn't get the original signal in the tunnel so they can rebroadcast whatevber they want

Hopefully you get what i mean

Ok question:

why are there 8 speed cameras in that tunnel? is that their way of saying "we've spent bucket loads on this tunnel and one way to recoup the costs is by charging motorists fines, and to make sure they get fined we'll put 8 speed cameras there. We'll also make sure we'll vary the speed limit 8 times between each camera that way we can catch them for sure.. yeah that'll f*** em over".

or am i way off?

this tunnel is as advanced as any other modern tunnel built in the last couple of years

you pretty much can't do it any other way

as much as i f***ing hate speed cameras etc

i genuinely think it would be for safety so knobs don't try to use it as a top speed run

The way I see it is they're just coving all their bases. There is one camera for each lane going in each direction. It would be stupid to leave a way to speed though the tunnel without getting caught.

Yeah this, isn't there a bunch of guys in japan who do nothing but high speed runs in one of the tunnels over there? Also rev heads with loud zorsts like to do it to hear out their phat pipes echo in tunnels.

To be honest I want to drive through it at least once just to see what it's like but:
Did you mention the speed signs are digital and can be changed whenever they feel like it?

What happens if they change it right after you've gone passed one so you don't see it and end up going over the limit, this sounds like a good way to get more money from speeding fines to me.

"If you’re planning on using the tunnel in the next few days just remember this may also be the first time for other motorists so keep your eyes on the road, keep to the speed limit and try to stay in your lane at all times."
I don't think they want you to avoid over taking, I think it's more because you're all entering unfamiliar territory and you don't know what's up ahead whether a lane is closed or a car is broken down etc. I think it's more about not taking risks, acting like a d******* and causing someone to brake or crash by overtaking or cutting in front of someone.

That being said, if someone's going really slow I'm overtaking that fool. Maybe I'll take my camera and film my run, overtake someone and record the results.

The government doesn't toll the tunnel, it's a private company. I saw some stupid comment on Courier Mail today saying that billions of dollars of ratepayer money was wasted. The council only put in a fraction of the cost of the tunnel, most of it was paid for by the operator.

yeah lowgoz is splat. whoop.

Ok more questions answered

8 speed cameras due to 2 x lanes in 2 x tunnels, so you really only pass through two. Its to stop asshats crashing their cars and ending up like diana

of course the tunnel has backup generators. They tell you to turn your lights on so other people can see you. You'd never know if the power went out, nothing would change.

rebroadcast is of every station, but if you think about it they only need very low power, its not like when your driving normally your radio is picking up really strong signals. Stop the cancer fear BS.

If you are at the bowen hills end, you will see construction of airport link flyovers. This means that you will be able to exit the tunnel out there and get straight onto airport link which essentially is a tunnel straight out to the airport.

GPS does not work in the tunnel. Even if it did, the flyovers and tunnel itself isn't mapped yet.

Depends on the system they have, but the lights (except for battery powered emergency lighting) probably would go out until the generators kicked back in.

Even if it was, it's not like the GPS is going to tell you to take a sharp left 60m underneath the river either.

Went through the tunnel both ways today. Driving north my radio coverage kept getting interrupted with advice there was congestion ahead. I got the picture the first time, particularly since I drove past the congestion on my way through the first time. I understand that the broadcast probably can't be directed at sections of the tunnel, but the tunnels are obviously independent of each other.

All in all, it was a good to drive through it once, but I don't see myself using it once the toll kicks in, particularly since it's actually quite boring.

Also, the sign-age should be improved, as the exit onto the ICB isn't clear.

That would have been awesome, since I did miss having a view, however, the tunnel goes under the river, not along the bottom, so no fishes would be able to be seen.

My comment was based on the hype that surrounded the tunnel. I merely expected the tunnel to live up to that hype, particularly since this was the first (serious) tunnel I had driven through.

Tunnel is back to being tolled as of this morning, but with 30% off (not sure if that's all vehicle classes, only briefly saw the sign on the way northbound).

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Personally I think the $4.28 is too steep.

The Tunnel opening made a significant difference to my commute to and from work (I don't use the tunnel) so I hope that doesn't change.

I'm on holidays this week so they'll have 1 week to sort it out!

I do see a lot of people using the tunnel, though no-where near as much as when it is free. So your commute should still be slightly faster.

Anyone with a company vehicle will surely use the Tunnel. Most Tradies I know said they couldn't justify the extra $45 a week to use it. Some have said they will use it though, as it all goes back off tax.

$900m The cost of building the tunnel.

$350m Estimated sale value.

$570m What the banks are owed.

$220m Likely loss for the banks.

$100m The looming court claims.

97,000 Original daily traffic estimate.

30,000 The current daily traffic flow.

Basically. No-one used it because the Toll-Fee was too high.

no one used it for ages because it was ridiculously expensive

to put things into perspective, the few minutes you'll save each day will cost you $2k/year at 48 weeks

You'll save a bit in fuel and wear and tear on your car though which will be a small saving to offset the toll cost.

I reckon the $4.28 is too high.

$2.50 sounds good to me. I'd use it daily for that if using it was an option for me.

It shouldn't be tolled if it is such an integral part of Brisbane Traffic management.

That being said, I have absolutely no reason to use it. It would only be of use to me if I was going to Stones Corner or something near and that doesn't really happen.

I used it the other day purely to use it, to get to my destination from Holland Park to Kelvin Grove it would have been better to go a different route, but I used the tunnels, it took a similar amount of time but I would normally have to pay for it :/

c***s put the gateway tolls up to try and force people through the new tunnel, all it seems to have done is increased congestion through the city

Out of curiosity is it a flat fee or is it cheaper for bikes?

Still over here in Canada... but I'll be back in a week.
Missed the free period, but if it is infact free after midnight I'll take a run through it just for the hell of it to take a look.

No use to me for where I go but hopefully inbound traffic on the freeway will be a bit less which will benefit me.

I've never seen any stats on Public to Private funding for the Tunnel. Is it something they havent released or is my Google-Fu weak?
I was under the impression that the lions share of the cost for the road was footed by the RiverCity group. They would also be incharge of maint costs if i'm not mistaken.

rubba-chikin;
RiverCity Motorway has left the door open to continuing the discounts beyond May 10, when it was expected to begin charging the full tolls: $4.28 for cars, $2.14 for motorbikes, $6.42 for light commercial vehicles and $11.33 for heavy commercial vehicles.

People like to get things for free.
If you do 9 trips make the 10th free.

I was reading somewhere that Australia has the highest tolls per Km in the world.

Went to uber s*** when they stopped the free tolling and the numbers dropped to a level where they're actually losing money.

Wasnt this pretty much expected though?

$4.50 is just too much for a toll that they expect people to pay for a daily commute. Thats like $45 a week if people use it every day to and from work, thats over $2000 a year. Alot more than people would pay for insurance, more than the cost of fuel, more than rego.

I think about $2.50 is the highst people would deal with.

I reckon that new bridge they are building from west end over to the ICB is going to fail even more, its a toll to cross a bridge and I thinks its going to be over $3.

I think they're screwed, lowering the price of the toll might increase the amount of people but ultimately they needed the same amount of people going through when it was free (assuming new + free = max amount that will ever go through in the near future) but paying the $4.30 to turn the profit they wanted.

Thats the whole problem with this kinda thing, people shouldnt be making money from the roads we drive on.

Im not sure if its possible but the government should have funded it all and run the tolling. Then it should be run with the minimum toll to pay it off in 30-50 years.
mission

I reckon $2.50 is also max it should be. You'd probably save a litre of fuel avoiding all the stop start traffic so it really isn't too bad then. I wouldn't think twice to use it at $2.50.

I couldn't believe that new Go Between Bridge is going to be tolled, that's just dumb.

Trying to fix traffic problems by charging commuters stupid tolls ain't going to work.

meh within a few weeks people will start to realise that a loss of $4.50 is better than sitting in traffic for 30mins.

Ya well it's going up to $3.85 in july so you can expect less people to use it. They paid that thing off years ago yet the prices are still going up.

The council built it though (along with some private company), I don't think they'd have the money to build it outright.

i was explaining why they put the prices up ya mong.

anyway i dont think the price increase is going to have too much of an affect on traffic. the other options people have to get over that way are even worse than the gateway imo.

I'm not really interested in why they put the price up. They can try and justify it until they turn blue and purple. It's the motorists that always get the raw deal at the end. I for one won't be using it when the price goes up, only if a really have to.

anyway i dont think the price increase is going to have too much of an affect effect on traffic
