Topic: Who's at work today?

So there's virtually nobody at uni today. There was no notice about being given today off, which makes me think that people either mistakenly think today is a holiday, or are just being dodgy.

My mate who is a paid staff member has just decided to not come in, and when I asked why, he just said, 'Probably for the same reason no one else is there'. Shocking, IMO >.< Am I being a grinch?

I'm about to head into work now. Stupid work, making me work on stupid stupid.

O well, I also have to work new years eve late shift, yay for being at work during the countdown.

We also have this stupid time management system, that you have to log in and out with your fingerprint. So you cant sneak of home early even though there will be ZERO work. So instead we have to sit around the tea room playing cards, y a y.

I'm at work, most people are packing it in around lunch. Which seems like a good idea to me. I do have plenty of project work to do but i'm using today to fix up all the little jobs and stuff like Plot Parameter files and Title blocks.
Stuff that you cant really charge time to but need to be done to make everything else move smothly.
I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to fix the cluster f*** which is AutoCAD 2009 after ISS installed it. I dont know how they managed to f*** up so many of the settings (many of which are better off on Default...) and the 2009 install broke the 2000 DWG Template file which has worked with 2002, 2004 and 2006... but Thats AutoCAD's fault. It's still randomly crashing when you try to go into Options and doesn't want to recognise anyones profiles... but I think thats due to netword permissions and where the profiles are stored.

I start back on the 5th.

Already had a beer. Probably wouldn't keep in the work fridge over the Christmas break anyway.

Hell yes. Sif any actual work gets done around this time of the year. Why waste an annual leave day on xmas eve where the boss tells everyone to just bugger off halfway through the day anyway.

Me. For 1/2 a day or so.

I like working through Xmas (we don't close down, often are pretty busy with end of version development/testing). Rather take a week off in middle of the year.

Taking the first week of 2010 off to camp on Fraser and then taking just over 2 months (paid leave) off to go to Europe/UK in Aug/Sept.

1/2 the company is here with me today and next week (the 3 days).

Might raid the beer fridge at some stage later.

At work, but just got told we can leave at lunch time - woot!

Here Tuesday-Thursday next week too. If anyone is in the New Farm area, we will be getting into some xbox and possibly lunch at Merthyr Bowls. The more the merrier!

Umm.. annual leave days don't get used up on public holidays, it's paid for anyway. Unless you were talking about working through normal days leading up to xmas/NYE.

As for bludgyness, it's been like that for me for that past 2 months (evidently by my higher than average daily postcount).

No, but UQ shuts down between xmas and new years so you're not supposed to be there. But the other thing about academia is it's as cruisy as you want it to be. You might struggle to get another job/grant/funding/qualification/tenure etc. But you're not locked into a minimum (or maximum for that matter) number of hours or time of the day you should work (in most cases). 9-5 Monday to Friday means nothing, the best work way more than that, the worst way less and often get away with it in the short term. But it also means even for the hard workers you can take an afternoon off if you need to without justifying it to anyone. Not to mention in the cases of most of the biol labs around campus, if you’re taking a week and a half off you’ve had to wrap things up over the last week so you probably don’t have a lot to do right now (so the people you see today (mainly post-grad students and young post-docs) are probably the ones that will be there right through the 'break').

Edit: And to answer the question, I'm one of the young post-docs so I am working, but it's only 7pm on the 23rd here in the US.

Unless you're a public servant, then the day after boxing day is a public holiday - public servants day.

I love working these days ... I can change things without change control :P ... cause no one is around to tell me not too!!!

I'd rather use leave to split up the boring parts of the year.

Talking about yourself in third-person again *sigh*

Also, "Director-General", lol. Funny the things some people like to call themselves. Sounds more like a military rank.

I've just finished a pub meal and am on my way home from my day at work. In next week for the three days too. Seems crazy to waste paid annual leave this time of year.

As a contractor it's a good move, but for normal employees..

Stuck at work until 8:30pm :-(. Apparently some desperate people still bet on horse racing all night on xmas eve.

Last year i had the graveyard shifts over xmas eve and XMAS day.

This year i have it off so I am very much looking forward to enjoying a proper christmas this year.

There was an email that went around yesterday on the staff list saying if you don't come in, its an RDO, but if you do come in that you can leave at midday. Not that anyone would know who is on campus anyway.

I had a client ring up and want me to attend a site after the laughter subsided i quoted triple time and a half and triple the standard callout fee, so $378p/hr + $162 callout before I leave the house, oh and I have been drinking since 7am so don't me to be a) on time b) sober plus you will have to fly me to the qzn airport because I am about 400Km from your site. Or you could call the heldesk you know the number that was repeated on my voice mail 3 times on my pabx before it diverted then 2 times on my mobile.
