Dunno if any of you guys remember this little gem from back in the good old skool lan days.. I believe it was bundled with win98 and it's simple a little app you run, type a message and a little window on every machine connected to the network pops up with the message.. Is there something similar for win7??

doesn't work for me, did a google and says I need to have messenger running? lame? (currently testing with winxp to other winxp machine)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messenger_service

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/net_send.mspx?mfr=true

winpopup was easier, type winpopup in run command, a little window pops up, type message and wella >:(

actually it's the opposite of lame!
it's always been that way too - it's just that some versions of windows had the service enabled by default

ps: voila

Net send was totally f***ing gay.

Pausing the game of counterstrike to f*** the pro cs maen team we were playing down at siege, now that was some f***ing awesome LAN action.

pretty sure net send isn't on vista and 7. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure they replaced it with something else. I'll see if I can find a link

how is it opposite to lame? messenger is dead to me and net send should be something that can run independantly to messenger.

it's the opposite of lame because being able to type a command and cause a popup box to appear on the screen of another person's pc without them having chosen to run a daemon that allows it, is completely lame

maybe in your workplace.

any workplace
not to mention all the other places outside of the workplace where windows is used

noone should ever be able to cause a popup over your screen causing you to lose focus or otherwise interfere with what you're doing unless you explicitly enable the ability for them to do that, yourself

metasploit can send more than just a message to another persons machine :P

i used to love dropping a banner on a flunkys terminal at work with a nice message reminding them how awesome i was;

but then they locked down all the tty's

if interference is of concern, then instead of having to install/run a chatting program (messenger) to enable another chatting program (net send) to work, a simple tick box type option somewhere should be implemented to enable/disable net send.. I don't know about you guys, but one of the first things I do when I install a fresh copy of xp is get rid of messenger.

I think you're getting the messenger service mixed up with msn maybe? I thought that before, but then thought nah, cos of the links you posted which explain it all

yeah you're right, In the first link, I ignored messenger service and scrolled straight down to net send.. I did get confused.

So how do you start the messenger service?

net start messenger

Tried it and got this:

System error 1058 has occurred.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I think I'm just gonna give up on this.

Did you set its startup mode to automatic/manual? Perhaps it's set to disabled. What are you trying to do anyway? Convince people at work god is talking to them through net send or something?

Windows 7 has no messenger service so starting it will do jack diddly squat. There is no easy way to do this on windows 7 short of a program running on each pc or using a combination of something like psexec and msg.

Well there are a few programs that use the bonjour service to send messages, I've sent messages between my 2 computers without being connected to the net this way but obviously you'd need the client installed on each computer. Probably only useful if you're hosting a lan at home and you're all in different rooms (saves shouting out details at 4am).

I remember one of the guys in my IPT class in school logged in as someone else (they had just reset all the passwords, to password) and did a net send to the entire school. Not pretty language either.

Other guy got in heaps of trouble and was even officially suspended. They finally worked out it was hard for him to do from PE class when he was on the footy oval...

That use to be how we'd communicate in class and even in tests because our IPT teacher barely knew how to work a VCR, didn't think the 'Windows' message was anything she had to worry about.

Heh, should probably read the thread before posting. Hi5 Whoop
