Topic: Left 4 Dead 2 Refused Aussie Classification upon review
Tremble
Posts: 112
Location: Brisbane, Queensland
Just took a gander at the OFLC site.
A three-member panel of the Classification Review Board (the Review Board) has unanimously determined that the computer game Left 4 Dead 2 is classified RC (Refused Classification).

In the Review Board’s opinion, Left 4 Dead 2 could not be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification. The computer game contains a level of violence which is high in impact, prolonged, repeated frequently and realistic within the context of the game.

In addition, it was the Review Board’s opinion that there was insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional ‘infected’ characters. This was a major consideration of the Review Board in determining the impact of this game on minors.

Computer games classified RC cannot be sold, hired, advertised or demonstrated in Australia.
Seems Aussies will be stuck with the censored version on release.

Commence bitching.

Actually by not buying it, you punish the developer for producing an Australian friendly version.

End result will be developers going well lets not bother producing an Australian friendly version. Which will then mean your parralel imports will be forced to play on US servers.

Or more like by not buying it, the developer complains and releases decreasing sales stats. Gets media attention (hopefully) and then public pressure mounts to change the stupid classification laws.

Even better if the developer decides not to bother with an Australian version. More attention.

If you buy the baby version now then baby versions will become the normal thing to do for an Australian market

And if you don't buy it, the normal thing to do will be not bother releasing the game in Australia at all.

Why punish the game developer for its, not like they made the rules or can change our classification system.

It's not punishing the game developer... it's just choosing not to buy their game since parts of it are missing due to the regulations of our great country.

they can be blamed for being so f***ing inconsistent.

If they gave RC for every game that actually should be 18+, there would have been a huge uproar years ago, and this probably would have been changed by now.

As it stands, the guys on the board are a group of f***tards.

Would be great to hear if the uncensored version will be compatible with the censored version... (I don't think comparing the UK and AU L4D1 is any real proof :(

If it is compatible, I am so importing my copy... November will so so many nerd riots. Thankfully the stereotypical nerd hasn't the motivation to do much... but they do have great strength in one of their arms... could be dangerous!

Inconsistent classification standards cheese everyone off. I'm not a fan of blood, guts, gore and full on violence, but I also hate the double standards of censorship in Australia. Why is X-rated porn illegal in every state except Canberra, where it is actually made? Why the fuss over this game and not others that are just as bad or worse? If they are so concerned about exposing kids to bad things, then why do my kids have soft/semi porn magazine content in their faces and at their eye level every time we walk past the magazine stand in any news agency? If the argument is that the govt will not create an R18 rating because they can't police it, then what about other media outlets, such as your local DVD library? Adult content is poorly policed, if at all with other forms of media, so why apply different standards to the gaming industry?

That G2PLAY site seems like a good option, provided that I'll DEFINITELY be able to play the uncensored version. There's no real way to know before the game is out and others have tried it. I might just wait until release day and see.

I wonder if they will reply to a letter detailing other games that are just as bad, worse, or the same (L4D) and asked to explain why they are so inconsistent.

I too find the inconsistency stupid.

I bet the letter would receive a stock standard reply.

So if we order a box etc. from an online company from overseas they'll send an uncensored version and not a censored aussie version is this the norm?

What's peoples recommendations for such stores that they've dealt with before, never ordered online except through steam.
Will most likely still wait and see that its playable on AU servers though, but its worth having options open I guess.

I seem to recall this coming up last time and there being some restrictions about doing this? Or is that just for RC games (like, it's actually illegal to import an RC game, or something)
Mephz

I imagine it would be illegal but I don't particularly care about that =P
Unless they opened the games box and loaded it up I can't see them being able to really tell that easily.
And at worst I'd say they confiscate it and you'd simply lose it with perhaps a written letter in your mailbox as a slap on the wrist for importing it.

It sounds like its going to be a massive pain in the ass to acquire, but yeah, like others, I'm not paying for a reduced version because some psychotic christian zealots say otherwise :)

Hmmmm, better yet/easier idea.

Will we be able to purchase over steam (censored or not)
Then just donwload the game, yes, blatantly pirate the thing (that you've already paid for)...
Over-write your existing files and go nuts?

This might be a bit of a problem with steam given it seems to be a bit different with its installation than from boxed versions?

Is this viable?

If it works the same as L4D1, getting it gifted will work without any special downloading.

German players who got it gifted from outside got the uncensored version, and there were even reports of people in the USA getting it gifted from Germany and getting the gimped version. So it is based purely off place of purchase.

Got my gifted copy ready to go, fingers crossed.

If the loss of a bit of blood is that much of an issue, then well... you should try importing it from overseas (which supposedly works)

Also, should be supporting valve, i could understand if it were IW/Activision

Nobody knows for sure. But probably, yes. They will give you a cd-key and you just click 'activate a product on steam', pop it in, and it downloads/installs.

Okay guys I have a theory here.

If you set ?cc=US in your browser at the Steam store in the URL; and proceed to the checkout, you *may* get the uncensored version.

After purchase, if you visit your account info (click Login / your email address at the top right of the screen) you will see:

Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder)
instead of:
Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder AU)

Only worth giving it a shot as a last resort!

If you visit your account info (click on 'Login' at the top right, or your account username, on steampowered.com), under the purchases list does it say 'Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder)'? If so (as opposed to 'preorder AU') I think you have the uncut version.

Yeah, it said Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder), nothing about it being the AU one.

I did it through the website, not through the actual steam client, so hopefully it doesn't get too confused about me logging in from different places. I left the steam client closed the whole time, and only re-opened it once the purchase was all done and I was back on an australian IP.

Oh well, if nothing else, it'll be an interesting experiment :P

Here's an interesting trick...

Remove funds from your card and attempt a purchase, you can see under your account info on the steam site that a 'charge failed' trying to purchase 'Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder AU)' when you use Australia as the country and cc=AU. Yet if you try CC=US and billing country as USA, it says it failed for 'Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder)' :)

I don't see any reason valve would try to stop this, I don't think they are legally obligated to, and are probably allowing this to go on. According to the oflc statement RC games cannot be sold, hired, advertised, or demo'd in australia, but it doesn't mention buying, playing, owning, distributing, etc..

Yes, Gabe mentioned a patch during his recent Aussie visit if I remember correctly and it again, I'm unsure wether it was provisional on the game as a whole not being refused classification.

Yeah I had. Actual Steam program not the online browser store. Should be ok since their FAQ says they can if the game hasn't come out yet.

Also something I found on the forums...

Q - Will Valve ban my account for importing/owning an uncut version in my country?
A - *Rewritten 23/10/09 (dd/mm/yy)* Valve can ban any users account at any time. Because owning an imported version of the game is legal in both Australia and Germany, no action will specifically be taken on Valves part.

So looks like valve will take no action for people doing this. Just means they can't sell the game here uncut is all really. If they really didn't want people playing different versions of the game, you wouldn't be able to gift games internationaly.

I went through the same method as Khel did. I got a trial VPN account that was linked in this thread or the MW2 one, used it to set up a UK account, and added the new account to my friends list. Then, I bought the game on the UK account through the VPN, and gifted it to my actual account. I didn't bother changing any of the billing information other than the country.

My flatmate brought up an interesting point, do you reckon theres multiple versions of the demo? Do demos have to be classified by the classification board? Like will Australia get a censored demo, or the full gore demo?

Anyone here think valve tried to pull the wool over the classification boards eyes by showing them the german version of the game in the resubmitted version, but will actually release the proper version in AU? Are they really gonna go back and check whats been released here? lol I am making up conspiracies here... but you never know.

Far easier to play by the rules and look for loopholes than to break the rules. Although what Monoxide is saying would be basically true anyway if they patched the gore in, but it's perfectly legal.

In the latest Steam update there was a patch to gifting that 'fixed bugs'.

Anyone know if this might affect the method?

The only gift bugfix I can see was from 3 days ago, and it seemed like it was specifically for the L4D2 four-pack.
Fixed a crash on activation of a Left 4 Dead 2 4-pack gift

I just gifted myself the games from the UK store yesterday, and it worked fine. :)

That was an actual bug, it happened to me. Just had to restart steam and it was fine.

OK so just a question about this proxy buisness...

When I go to the steam store with my normal connection and search for rockstar games, it only comes up with 1, GTA4. However when I add the proxy details in and refresh it suddenly brings up like 20 of them. If I buy L4D2 with the proxy on, and pay with paypal (I have a paypal account) should it work or would it spaz out since it says I live in australia in the Paypal account.

Guess I have to wait though since still waiting for a reply on my pre-order refund.

Let us know how the refund goes, I am also waiting for a refund for my AU pre order of left 4 dead 2. I don't want to end up with two copies of left 4 dead 2!

Paypal didn't work for me, even with the proxy on, it spazzed out. Credit card did work though.

So... adding your credit card in like a normal purchase, but changing the country to US, state to cali and finding a post code for the brisbane area there works? really? I would of thought that never would of worked.

I didn't even have to change the state or postcode. All I did was change the country and it worked.

All this info is confusing me. Do I need this VPN thing or can I just use a proxy in my browser and buy it through the website store instead of the actual steam program?

must be diff for UK store. did you have to input state and zipcode yourself? with US as country you have to choose the state from a drop down box before it would let you continue.

heh sorry to whoever I said you cant get a refund on steam. You can get a refund on a preorder if the game isn't out yet.

So if you wanna change from the aussie version gogogo :)

Oh, yeah, well when you select UK, it's like it is when selecting Australia. It lets you actually type in a state, rather than selecting from a list. I also found that the conversion from pounds to AUD was a few dollars better than going from USD to AUD.

I bought mine from here http://www.haloboosting.com/l4d2.aspx. No way they can check my CC details and this is way cheaper than buying it single and its the US version. Demo preloaded and ready to rock!

Interesting thing with the accidental *.ncf included Borderlands for the .AU version that wasn't present in the .US version which has since been pulled an cited as an accident....

So I just read this on the SA forum (where people with skills post apparently)

Here's a fix for the censored versions of the demo.
Just requires editing of two text files.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u41/adzicents/l4d2demofix.jpg

and

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u41/adzicents/l4d2demofix2.jpg

Then apparently you have to run left4dead2.exe in the game folder, not through Steam and to connect to a server it must be running with app id 510 as well.

Not sure why the appid doesn't work with 590. Mine is uncensored, and my appid is 590.

LOTUK posted this in the other L4D2 thread (the demo one)

FYI for those who haven't bought the game yet, the following painless method worked for me (presuming they don't crack down on it):

1) browse to http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=uk
2) log in using your normal steam account
3) Buy the game for yourself
4) Change your country when paying at the checkout to United Kingdom (you can leave all the other Aussie details as is)
5) An open as window should appear where you can click OK to add it to steam (I don't think this part is necessary, but just saying what I did)
6) You now have the uncut version (at least I'm playing the uncut demo, so presumably this means the full version will be uncut)

I did it this morning, worked perfectly. Limbs flying, exposed spinal columns with a sniper rifle etc

Left 4 Dead 2 (preorder)
Left 4 Dead 2 Demo (AU)

does that mean i have the Aussie demo and the UK preorder or what. i thought people were playing the UK demo version...

It means you have the complimentary aussie demo. You also still have the uk/us demo.
Everyone gets the AU demo if you login from AU. It is the public demo. Not the pre-order demo.

For example over the weekend my mate bought the game using a VPN. it now says in his account because he logged in from the UK vpn and from normal AU address.

It means you'll get the AUS one if you didn't use any trickery.

Have fun with your low violence.

He said that he did use trickery.

Everyone in AUS gets that complimentary demo in their account. Regardless of how or where you got L4D2 from. Soon as you login to steam it will detect that you are from AUS so it will auto add that to your account. It is for the public demo which isn't out for a few days.

I'd say you are downloading the gore version. Assuming you were successful in buying the UK l4d2.

No he didn't. He asked how to play the US/UK one. He never said he leeched the US/UK version.

So I'm assuming he wants to know how to make it full gore, unless I'm assuming something different.

My new steam account with L4D2 on it says "Left 4 Dead 2 Demo (AU)" in the account section but I still have full violence and all. IDK what that means.

So far the most annoying thing about the us copy is you tend to get us servers, but since I don't have the AU one not entirely sure if it's a US specific problem. Setting 'sv_search_key internode' or 3fl or something from a google works well.

Are you sure you don't have your Steam region set to USA. I set mine to Los Angeles to test if the demo would update to the censored intro version, and I suddenly get american servers in L4D1, which was bought in Australia. The US version shouldn't be going to US servers.
