Topic: XPS M1530 with Gbit capable NIC scaled to 10/100

Hey guys,

Just looked into my NIC on my Dell XPS M1530 and it has a Marvell Yukon 88E8040 which is apparently capable of gbit ethernet... After reading this i'm of the opinion that dell crippled its own network card to prevent people buying an XPS over a latitude.

Anyone on her know about this or know of a way to uncripple my poor NIC? Perhaps a firmware upgrade or some non dell drivers? That is all over my head, but hopeing someone here may know something about it?

Cheers all!

Are you connected to a gigabit switch or router?

For some reason they didn'ty include Gigabit in the M1530, and may well have crippled it deliberately. I was pretty pissed when I found out but I got over it.

If gigabit is really that important to you there are other ways of going about it

Holy s***, really?

It was annoying to discover that it wasn't included in a 2500 laptop in early 2008.

Marvell Yukon FE+ 88E8040 is a Fast Ethernet controller. So it's 10/100.

Yeap

Yeap, but if i can achieve it without payin a cent its a better outcome.

Do you know if this is any different hardware wise to the gigabit ones?

Yes. The thread you linked to was started by a moron with no reading comprehension. Marvell don't mention anywhere that the 88E8040 can do gigabit, just that it has the same pin layout as the other Yukon controllers.
