Australian Parachute Federation - 12 months - $198
Covers me for $20 million public liability mainly, I'm not sure what else my money does for me though. Found out the APF will reimburse me $5 a jump if I'm training for a display license (to do events/festival/stadium demos). Hop n pops, $18 to 3,500ft... $5 back, $13 jumps FTW, going to be easy to get my $200 membership worth. |

Basketball = Approx $90 for personal rego and membership fees, also covers me for medical insurance etc and I think discounts to NBL games.
Then its just $50 team registration per season (4 seasons a year) and $65 per team a game to cover operating costs + referee's fees (they're never worth what they get paid). Team of 8 or so means game fees are about $8 a week and team rego is about $25 a year. |

Try to do 3-5 freefall jumps on the weekend ($40 to 10,000ft at Caboolture, $45 to 14,000ft at Ramblers/Toogoolawah), then however many $13 hop n pops possible on a Thursday with all the crusty 60 year old blokes training accuracy.
You only get ~5 seconds of subterminal freefall on the hop n pops, enough for few flips or a funky exit before you deploy, but you still get a full canopy ride/landing for a fraction of the price... plus it's less then 5 minutes to 3,500ft which is good when you got 5 fat nubs in a tiny Cessna. Just missed out on GC demo happening on the 23rd, something for the Indy, 4 planes, 24 jumpers with 6x3m Aussie flags landing on the beach, get paid $250 :(:(:( |

Trail racing x 4 ~400. I think all of the events are pretty heavily sponsored and are run on land that is very cheap for the organisers. I'm also not going for the 100km trail rides yet. Maybe next year.

Also, comment on whether sponsorship is a factor in reducing your registration. On all mine sponsorship doesn't seem to be a factor. Triathlon is heavily sponsored, but I consider that quite expensive. Soccer and cricket not at all sponsored. |

I think I am paying $490 for a 10 game hockey season this year. Hockey is always disproportionately expensive for some reason. Varies from club to club though.

Basketball player rego for me is around $120-130ish a year + about $60-65 a game. On top of that I've got Bball Referee rego as well, which is an extra $30-40 a year (largely because I Ref state & rep stuff). Definitely cheaper than a lot of other sports out there, although I think that's largely because it's offset by the money I get from reffing.
+ referee's fees (they're never worth what they get paid). No, Refs never get paid enough to deal with the crap they have to put up with. |

In my soccer league they do. The referee gets $120 for a game and linesmen get $60. That's a pretty handy rate if you ask me. We still can't get enough refs at that rate. So if we have a full compliment of refs, the home team is paying $240. Normally we only get one ref though. |

why should my tax pay for your offspring running around a park? Your tax pays them when they get fat. And its much more expensive fixing them when they have diabetes. In my soccer league they do. The referee gets $120 for a game and linesmen get $60. When i refereed (between 15 - 18) it was notoriously difficult to actually progress up the age brackets to where the real cash was. Also each year you have to keep paying upfront for all the ref training etc which is a drag. Its like a office meeting about something you want to do outside.. Thinking about it though, for fitness + sidecash I should consider taking up refereeing again. Way better to get paid for getting fit. last edited by skythra at 14:17:34 20/Jul/09 |

There is a shortage of soccer refs in VIC. You can pick and choose when and how you ref. Junior refs do 3-4 games in a row at the one club on a Sunday and clean-up. Junior refs get $45 or so depending on the age group, but the games are only 20-25min halves, so it's a good deal. Especially if you can do a few in a row. I think the only hard thing to ref is men's games. I ref often, but I'm a hard arse and don't take any s***, so I do alright. Just show the first bloke who gives you a bit of lip a yellow, make sure the spectators hear what you have to say to him, and the rest looks after itself. I subscribe to the 'refs that never played themselves are terrible' theory. Consistent, fair and confident people make good refs. |

kind of on topic... i looked at joining an archery club a while back that does field archery (kinda like golf where a group shoots from target to target) & it was gonna be about a total of $600 in introduction courses & liability insurance!@#! ffs. when i did field archery as a teenager we just rang a farmer to let him know we were shooting on his property & off we all went. sure archery can be a dangerous sport but in the 5years i did it we never had a mishap. sucks that everything cool like that is neutered these days by a combination of stupidity & fear of litigation :(
on topic : $0 fat n lazy. |

American Football (Gridiron) $350 at our club, others are up to $500.
In the end you can pay just $350 for fees, $400 for your own equipment and then about another $50-100 to own your own game day jersey if you want to. Nothing compares to playing this sport :) I used to be the captain of the wide bay cricket team when nathan hauritz played with me, he was a mean ass batter back then, then he turned to spin bowling and lost most of his skills as a batter... glad hes made the Australian Team though (/end rant) Played rugby league, union, soccer and i love grid iron the most. personal preferance |

its technogym baby.. you get a lil key .. like a car key which you stick into all the machines and it tells you what to do and where to go next.. then you can download it all and track your progress..
the novilty factor wore off for me after a week.. now i just use the key to get inside but this gym is 200m from my house so the handy factor makes it worth it |

Soccer refereeing fees vary depending on league and division.
Brisbane metro from met 6 to met 1 reserves get $30 line and $60 center. It goes up from there over met1 prem 3 - prem 3 to i think $105 for the center at prem 1 then prem league is $120 center and $60 for the line. The referees that do the premier league games are the guys that train 2-3 nights a week plus do the mentoring so $120 for a center really isn't great money considering they usually only do the 1 game for the weekend. I usually do 3 games a weekend. up to 2 centers so usually $120-$150 a weekend for about 8 hours of work. Any person working a casual job should referee a sport. Much better money than working in a super market. I just wish i realized this when I was 17. |

Not to mention refereeing sport generally falls under the "Recreational pursuit or hobby" banner, which means you don't have to pay tax on it. Good for those on the dole!

CaPt0, sounds like you could def make better money in VIC. League structure (Football Fed. Vic) is: A-League (putting here for reference only) Premier League State League 1 State League 2 State League 3 Provisional League 1 Provisional League 2 Provisional League 3 Gamut of Metropolitan Leagues Gamut of Thirds Leagues I play Prov 3 - main ref gets $120, linesmen $60. Main refs in Thirds Leagues get $70. Don't know about Metro. Teh_clicky (PDF) |

yeah my soccer is 450 rego a year Ours is going to be that next year. I went up for a header two years ago and the opposition dude, who was supposed to compete in the air with me, tunneled me instead - I landed with my full body weight on my head from a significant height and knocked myself out cold. Emergency room, including MRI on my head because I ticked a few boxes that meant I could have bleeding in my brain, cost me zero. |

Masters Rowing: ~$700 a year, then one or two away regattas as well as a smattering of local ones. This year it's two, one in Rocky and one in sydney. 5 days of competition each. Traveling costs and accommodation ends up costing a bit. Another $450 in event registration costs.
Yeah, it adds up. Luckily it kinda destroys my social life too, so there's not a lot of money going out that way and it all evens out. Good people, good exercise though. |
