This is for all you no0bs out there and lazy experienced gamers.

It works pretty well, noticed game improvements.

http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Designed to help optimize your PC for smoother, more responsive game play in the latest PC games with the touch of a button, Game Booster helps achieve the performance edge previously only available to highly technical enthusiasts. It works by temporarily shutting down background processes, cleaning RAM, and intensifying processor performance. That means you can keep all the features of Microsoft® Windows Vista® and XP® ready for when you need them, but turn them off when you are ready to get down to serious business – gaming. Game Booster makes it simpler to enjoy the latest games and take your experience to a new level. All systems go!

What kind of serious gamer doesn't just disable all non essential services permanently? I'm so hardcore I set the game as my shell so explorer isn't running in the background.

What kind of serioius gamer doesn't program their own s*** in assemly and optimise it before interfacing directly with it by hooking up jumper leads to cathodes connected to their temples?

actually this program is decent, turns off s*** you don't need, then at the click of the button, turns it back on again when you want to do like work or something.

Thanks orbitor and Trog for taking this post seriously.

I think it's pretty good, turns off more stuff then I even know how to. And like you said, can just flick it all back on when done.

Let me know how you go Trog.

I've always wanted to do this, but thought no one would believe it can be done.

pr0ps to these guys if they come up with the goods... better yet if game studios see he sence in taking the info onboard and building the stuff into games so you don't need a dedicated proggy for the job.

*edit*

it would be interesting to see what processes the proggy deems applicable to be closed, and what kind of performace boost (if any) that is gained

Not much info on their site that I can find but it sounds like all it does is clean the ram like programs have been able to do since windows 9x and set windows to start any new processes with above average processor priority assuming the next process you run will be your game exe.

As for processes to be shut down, there's lists all over the internet detailing which windows services can be safely shut down and which ones must stay running, same for which exe files should remain resident (explorer.exe, etc). I'd say it just looks at a similar list & acts accordingly.

I'm more interested in how it shuts them down, does it do a graceful process shutdown or does it just do the equivalent of right click -> end task in task manager?

edit: I installed it on a VM and sure enough, it has a(n editable) list of services to be stopped when you enter "gaming mode". Looks like it just shuts down the services in that list. I wonder if it turns them all back on again once it's done or sets them to their previous value if you've manually disabled a couple.

HA! A line on the main window: "When you are in Gaming Mode, this program can not be closed until you change to Normal Mode."
So in order to close down all unnecessary programs, you have to leave an unnecessary program running in the background.

Apparently 6GB of ram goes for just over 100 bucks these days. Screw GameBooster.

Just tried this under windows 7, brought my ram usage from 28% to 16%. Pretty nice.
