Hi QGL'rs,

Theres been a few posts recently about the cost of things between stores (a keyboard in DS etc). I bought a Dyson the other day, and the price difference was $300 between The Good Guys and Clive Peters.

So I decided to write an SMS service to save you running around. Say your out and about and you see a product on sale, say a "Logitech Harmony 785" and want to know the online price without spending ages googling on your phone, just text the make and model to 0450997447.

Its all free to use at the moment, I just want some feedback and user testing.

Give it a go and let me know how it goes. Texting the Barcode number works too, with limited results. And please save the number to your phone.

Thanks!

tried it with "logitech g5" as the product.

results over txt were: cheapest $88.99, most expensive $117.40 and average was $100.85.

not too far from what i got on http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=logitech+g5&spos=3

i suppose how good the results are depends on wherever your system gets that data from though?

but a seriously good idea, best of luck with it.

I thought these things already existed, you take a photo of the barcode with your mobile and send that on over to some number, and wammo, it comes up with results?

mooby this is f***ing brilliant idea. I'm a religious price checker for the most simple products, and as a result will waste countless hours driving from one side of Brisbane to the other just to make sure I can't save a few bucks somewhere else.

Tested with Nintendo Wii:

Cheapest $72 (??)
Most expensive $258
Average $107

Seems a little low? Or have they really come down that much?

Will this work for all goods, or just tech stuff?

yeah it does, and its comming out on android... but seriously, im an IT nerd, and to do that would take way too long.

The target audience is mums and dads too. they can text, but dont have fancy phones etc.

Thanks for the feed back, pass it on too :D

yeah, accessories throw the results. when you do search on these things, ipods wii etc. we are trying to include a standard deviation alg, that will cull the results that seem too high or low.

That's pretty cool. Is it possible to add where the cheapest price is for reference?

The idea is that you will recieve a link to our site. From there you can enter your number and see your searches... that will then give you links via affilates. Then we get a small cut from the shop if you buy through that link.

Website is phase 2, and in development now.

Be aware a lot of places will not price match online prices.
And if a price is online only be sure to include P&P because sometimes they underprice the item and massively overprice the P&P.

If however it stuck to catalogue prices eg. lasoo then at least people should price match.

Maybe for computer parts you should limit it to certain sites (ie like umart/msy/computer alliance to name a few and only australian sites). Also seconding the references. I would pay 0.50-1 dollar for this service.

Takes a few minutes to respond.

Tried "$2" and I got:
Cheapest - $2
Most expensive - $352

That's some overpriced $2...

Everything else I tried did return sensible results however.
