The source

When Jarrard Woods decided to hand in his notice yesterday he did it in a very geeky way.

Woods, a game developer who works with leading Canberra-based game producer 2K Australia, embedded his resignation advice in a game he created which he then forwarded to his boss and colleagues.

Combining elements of his own creation, Polychromatic Funk Monkey, and the iconic Nintendo game Super Mario Bros, Woods' resignation game gave six weeks' notice and a simple farewell message.

"Thank you 2K Australia! You gave me a paycheck, an incredible project and a world-class team to learn from. But my princess is in another castle. My last day is June 5, so I can still probably sign-off with ... "

The game, which is built in the Flash format, is posted on his website.

I like it it.

Hopefully he can develop a better jump model though - took me ages to work out you had to hold space bar for longer to jump higher. Should be more of an impulse me thinks.

I thought this'd be cool, but goddamn, what an obnoxious and childish way to leave a job that hasn't done you wrong.

Did you play all the way through? there was nothing obnoxious about it.

Besides it's a great way to get his name out, when he eventually does release an indie game it'll surely make the gaming news, more publicity = more sales

Yeah there's nothing obnoxious about announcing your resignation to everyone in the office at once in the words "I QUIT" over a flashing background and goofy music then publishing it on the internet.

He's going to have to do something impressive enough to bump this event off the top of his Google results if he ever wants to find another job.

I don't find it obnoxious really - I think it woulda been rude if that's how he resigned to his boss, but the game clearly states he resigned well before sending the thing around. Now he has free publicity for his next venture; seems like an awesome idea to me!

Except Mario is lame

The popcap framework's great for building robust 2D games with pretty antialiased sprites and sub-pixel scrolling. Unfortunately it's written in C++, which is labor intensive, damaging to creativity, and eats babies when nobody's looking.

So his new job is going to be making s*** little flash games with content ripped off of other popular games?

if so, then he's gonna make a lot of money ... stupid web games built for 40-something-stay-at-home-moms are a total cash cow.
